It means you should pause—not that your device is definitely infected or your information has already been stolen. A browser may be warning that a site is known for phishing or malware, or that it cannot verify the site’s secure connection. Those are different problems, and the exact warning text matters.
What can “page is not safe” mean?
The phrase alone does not identify a specific browser alert. Without the browser name, full warning text, or error code, it is not possible to tell which kind of warning you saw. In general, browser safety warnings commonly point to one of two issues:
The site may be associated with phishing or malware
Chromium describes Safe Browsing as a blocklist-based feature that warns users when they navigate to sites known for phishing or malware. The warning is a reason to leave the page, not evidence that your device has already been infected. Chromium Project’s Chrome Security FAQ explains how these warnings work.
The browser cannot authenticate the HTTPS connection
An HTTPS or certificate error means the browser cannot establish that it is connected to the expected server. Chromium notes that a serious, non-recoverable error can indicate either an attack or a network misconfiguration; the browser may not be able to distinguish between them at that point. This is different from a warning that a site is classified as malicious.

What should you do?
- Stop before entering sensitive information. Do not type a password, payment details, or other sensitive data while the warning is unresolved.
- Read the browser’s warning and check the full domain. Look at the address bar and confirm the domain carefully. Security cues inside the webpage, including a lock image or reassuring text, can be imitated and do not establish that the connection is secure. Chromium says trustworthy security indicators appear in the browser interface, not in page content.
- If the warning identifies phishing or malware, leave the page. If you need the service, open its official app or type an address you have independently verified rather than following a link on the flagged page.
- If the browser reports a non-recoverable HTTPS error, do not try to force your way through it. Chromium recommends raising that specific kind of error with your network provider or workplace IT department. Tell them the exact error and where it occurs.
Does a warning prove you were hacked?
No. A warning says something about the site or the browser’s connection to it; by itself, it does not establish that your device is infected or that data was taken. If you entered a password or payment information before noticing the warning, take the appropriate protective steps for that account or payment method rather than assuming either that it was stolen or that it is safe.
Likewise, a page loading without a warning does not prove it is harmless. Chromium notes that a malicious site may not yet be blocked by Safe Browsing.

Why might the warning appear on only one device or network?
That detail can help a network provider or IT team investigate, but it does not settle the cause: a device- or network-specific warning alone does not prove either an attack or a harmless local problem. Note which device and network show the warning, along with the browser’s exact message, and share those details with support if the error persists.
