A browser rendering engine is the part of a browser that processes a webpage’s resources and produces the page you see. It interprets HTML and CSS, works out how content should look and where it belongs, then generates the visual output. The browser itself is the larger application around that engine, and the exact division of responsibilities differs between projects.
What does a browser rendering engine do?
The engine takes webpage resources—including HTML, CSS, images, and other content—and turns them into a visual representation. MDN describes rendering engines, also called layout engines or browser engines, as browser components that transform page resources into the page displayed to the user. MDN’s rendering-engine glossary was last modified July 11, 2025.
Rendering is not necessarily the engine’s only responsibility. For example, Mozilla’s overview of Gecko covers parsing and rendering alongside networking, JavaScript, the DOM, inter-process communication, and platform abstractions. The precise scope depends on the engine and browser project.
How does an engine turn a webpage into pixels?
A useful way to understand rendering is as a sequence of related stages. It is a simplified model, not a promise that every browser follows identical internal steps or repeats the full sequence whenever the page changes.
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- Parse the page: The browser processes HTML into a document object model, or DOM, which represents the page’s content and structure. It also processes CSS into style information, often described as the CSS object model, or CSSOM.
- Calculate styles: The engine determines which styles apply to the page’s elements. It combines the document structure and style information to identify what should be displayed and how it should appear.
- Lay out content: The engine calculates the size and position of visible content, such as text blocks, images, and other elements.
- Paint the page: It creates drawing output for visual details such as text, colors, borders, and images.
- Composite when needed: Some implementations combine visual layers into the final frame shown on screen.
MDN’s explanation of how browsers work describes style, layout, paint, and—in some cases—compositing, with the DOM and CSSOM contributing to the render tree. The stages are not a rigid checklist for every update: Chromium’s RenderingNG architecture explains that changes such as scrolling or visual effects can skip some work, including layout or painting.
Is a rendering engine the same as a browser?
No. A browser is the complete user-facing application; the rendering engine is the technology within it that processes web content. Other components handle additional browser functions, and engine code can also be used in applications that are not full browsers. WebKit’s project documentation puts the distinction plainly: “WebKit is an engine, not a browser.” The WebKit Open Source Project also describes WebKit as an engine used by Safari and other applications.

- 100HZ FAST REFRESH RATE: 100Hz brings your favorite movies and video games to life. Stream, binge, and play effortlessly
- SMOOTH ACTION WITH ADAPTIVE-SYNC: Adaptive-Sync technology ensures fluid action sequences and rapid response time. Every frame will be rendered smoothly with crystal clarity and without stutter
The boundary is not identical across projects. Mozilla’s Gecko documentation, for instance, describes Gecko as responsible for rendering Firefox’s application interface as well as web content. That is why “rendering engine” is a useful general term rather than a strict description of one universally fixed set of browser components.
What are examples of browser rendering engines?
- Blink: The rendering engine used by Chromium and Chromium-based browsers. Chromium’s Blink documentation identifies Blink as Chromium’s rendering engine.
- Gecko: Mozilla’s engine for the web, with documented components for parsing, style, layout, graphics, networking, JavaScript, and the DOM. See Mozilla’s Gecko overview.
- WebKit: An engine used by Safari and other applications. Its project documentation distinguishes the engine from a complete browser and describes its goals and architecture.
These examples also show why a browser product’s name does not necessarily identify a unique engine. Multiple products can be built on the same browser project and share its engine.

- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
Why do rendering engines matter?
An engine affects how a site’s code and resources are interpreted and displayed. Differences in standards behavior or implementation can influence whether a page works and looks consistent across browsers. Performance and responsiveness, security and reliability, and integration with the operating system or device can matter too.
Those factors are not a simple ranking of engines by speed. WebKit lists compatibility, standards compliance, stability, performance, battery life, security, and privacy among its project goals; these are stated goals, not evidence that it leads on every measure. A site’s behavior also depends on the browser or application built around the engine.
