Use your browser’s built-in privacy protection first, then consider a well-supported tracker-blocking extension for additional coverage. Browser defaults vary, extensions work in different ways, and either layer can disrupt parts of a website. Neither one blocks every form of tracking or makes you anonymous.

How browser privacy settings and tracker-blocking extensions differ

Built-in browser protections are controls maintained as part of the browser. Depending on the browser, they may block or isolate third-party cookies, restrict tracking content, or mitigate other tracking techniques. Their coverage and default behavior are not the same across browsers.

Tracker-blocking extensions run as an additional layer. Many compare website requests with lists of known tracking scripts. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) says its Privacy Badger extension instead learns about trackers from their behavior and describes it as covering forms of tracking that most built-in features overlook. That description applies to Privacy Badger, not to every extension.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The distinction matters: blocking third-party cookies is not the same as blocking every tracking script, and blocking known trackers is not the same as resisting browser fingerprinting. The EFF notes that complete tracker blocking is difficult even with a full-featured blocker. [EFF: Cover Your Tracks]

These tools also act at different points. A browser feature may block a category of content, isolate storage so one site cannot freely share it with another, or apply a mitigation to a tracking technique. An extension may inspect requests and decide whether a particular resource matches a known list or behavioral pattern. Both can reduce opportunities for cross-site tracking, but a setting described as “cookie blocking” should not be treated as a promise to block scripts, and a script blocker should not be assumed to address every way a site can identify a browser.

That is why the question is not simply which option is “stronger.” The useful comparison is what protection is actually enabled in your browser, what an extension specifically says it does, and whether those controls work with the sites you need. A layered setup can make sense, but adding more controls does not automatically mean every kind of tracking is covered or that the overall configuration is less identifiable.

What the major browsers protect by default

Defaults are a useful starting point, but they do not tell the whole story. The comparisons below concern the cited sources’ descriptions of tracking protections; they are not claims that a browser has no other privacy or security controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Browser Protection described by the sources What to keep in mind
Firefox Mozilla says Standard Enhanced Tracking Protection is enabled when Firefox is downloaded. With Enhanced Tracking Protection enabled, Firefox uses Total Cookie Protection. Standard and Strict offer different levels of blocking. Strict can break site features, and Firefox provides a per-site control for troubleshooting. [Mozilla Support: Enhanced Tracking Protection in Firefox for desktop]
Safari / WebKit WebKit says its tracking-prevention technologies are mostly on by default. It documents default third-party-cookie blocking, partitioned third-party storage and cache, and other mitigations. WebKit’s policy recognizes that protections can affect federated logins, embedded media, social widgets, fraud prevention, and other practices. [WebKit: Tracking Prevention] [WebKit: Tracking Prevention Policy]
Chrome MDN’s cross-browser guide says Chrome does not block third-party cookies by default, except in Incognito or when a user explicitly configures blocking. This is specifically about third-party cookies, not a claim that Chrome lacks other privacy features. Browser behavior can change, so check the current setting in your version. [MDN: Third-party cookies]

These descriptions are not a controlled comparison of how much tracking each browser stops. They show why it is worth checking your browser’s own controls instead of assuming that every browser starts with the same protections.

In particular, a difference in third-party-cookie defaults is not a complete ranking of browser privacy. The cited Chrome comparison concerns third-party cookies; it does not mean Chrome has no other privacy or security controls. Similarly, Safari/WebKit’s several documented mitigations and Firefox’s different protection modes are not directly comparable as a single score. The sources do not measure all three browsers under one test or establish a percentage of trackers each stops.

What built-in protection can cover

Firefox: Standard and Strict protection

Mozilla lists these protections in Firefox’s Standard mode: social media trackers, cross-site tracking cookies (while isolating other third-party cookies), tracking content in Private Windows, cryptominers, and fingerprinters. Strict mode blocks all cross-site cookies and tracking content in all windows, in addition to social media trackers, cryptominers, and fingerprinters. [Mozilla Support: Enhanced Tracking Protection in Firefox for desktop]

Firefox selects content to block using a list of known cross-site trackers. If a page relies on blocked third-party content, some of its features may fail. The more restrictive setting is not automatically the better choice for every person: it may mean more breakage on sites you need to use. [MDN: Third-party cookies]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The difference between blocking and isolating is worth understanding. In Standard mode, Mozilla describes Firefox as blocking cross-site tracking cookies while isolating other third-party cookies. Isolation limits how that storage is shared across sites; it is not the same claim as blocking every third-party resource. Strict mode is broader in the specific categories Mozilla lists, including all cross-site cookies and tracking content in all windows. Neither description means every tracker or every fingerprinting technique is stopped.

For most readers, Standard is a sensible default to leave in place because Mozilla says it is enabled when Firefox is downloaded. Strict is an available choice if you want its broader listed blocking, but be prepared for site-specific troubleshooting. Firefox’s dashboard and address-bar shield give you controls to inspect protection and turn it off for a site that is not working. That exception applies to the affected site rather than requiring a global change.

Safari and WebKit: multiple tracking mitigations

WebKit describes protections that go beyond a single cookie setting, including partitioning third-party storage and cache, alongside additional mitigations. Its policy states: “We will do our best to prevent all covert tracking, and all cross-site tracking (even when it’s not covert).” That is a stated policy goal, not a guarantee that all tracking is stopped. [WebKit: Tracking Prevention] [WebKit: Tracking Prevention Policy]

WebKit also acknowledges trade-offs with website practices and says: “When faced with a tradeoff, we will typically prioritize user benefits over preserving current website practices.” In practical terms, a site may behave differently when a protection blocks or limits a resource it expects to use. [WebKit: Tracking Prevention Policy]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

WebKit’s documentation includes defenses and mitigations for multiple tracking techniques, including fingerprinting. That is more informative than assuming Safari’s protections are only about cookies, but it still does not amount to a promise that every fingerprinting technique is defeated. Its policy also names possible effects on federated login, embedded media, social widgets, fraud prevention, and other practices. A protection can benefit privacy while still having an unintended effect on a particular feature.

Chrome: check the cookie setting rather than assume

MDN’s comparison says third-party cookies are not blocked by default in Chrome, except in Incognito or when the user explicitly sets Chrome to block them. That does not establish that enabling this setting will block tracking scripts, fingerprinting, or other tracking methods. Check the current privacy controls in your own Chrome version; the cited cross-browser guide is not a version-by-version changelog. [MDN: Third-party cookies]

Incognito is the exception described for Chrome’s third-party-cookie default in the cited guide; it is not evidence that all tracking is blocked in that mode. Nor should a cookie setting be confused with a full tracker-blocking extension. If you use Chrome, inspect the current setting rather than inferring the behavior from the browser name, and remember that settings and defaults can change between versions.

What an extension adds—and what it does not

An extension can provide a separate set of blocking rules or a different method of identifying trackers. For example, EFF explains that blockers commonly use lists of tracking scripts, while Privacy Badger learns from tracker behavior. EFF describes Privacy Badger as addressing forms of tracking that most built-in browser features overlook; this is not evidence that every extension adds the same coverage or works identically in every browser. [EFF: Cover Your Tracks] [EFF: Privacy Badger]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

EFF characterizes disabling tracking scripts in browser settings as reliably effective, though not as robust as a designated tracker blocker. That supports considering an extension as an additional layer, not replacing built-in protection. It also does not support a universal ranking of extensions: their detection methods, lists, controls, and browser compatibility differ. For any particular extension, look for documentation explaining what it blocks and how it handles a site that stops working.

Privacy Badger’s support sheet lists Chrome, Firefox, Firefox for Android, Edge, and Opera. Treat that list as product-specific, not as a guarantee that any tracker blocker is supported on those browsers or on every operating system. Before installing an extension, check its current listing and support information for your exact browser and device. [EFF: Privacy Badger factsheet]

An extension is not a substitute for understanding the browser controls already in place. Nor does adding one establish that your configuration resists fingerprinting: EFF warns that unusual privacy configurations can make a browser more distinctive. WebKit’s documentation describes fingerprinting defenses and mitigations, but neither source supports a claim that a browser setting or extension prevents every fingerprinting technique. [EFF: Cover Your Tracks] [WebKit: Tracking Prevention]

Fingerprinting is a separate consideration because it can rely on browser characteristics rather than the conventional cookie or script behavior a reader may expect a blocker to address. A tool’s name or broad “tracker blocking” description does not establish what it does about fingerprinting. Look for explicit documentation on that point, and avoid assuming that changing many settings necessarily helps: unusual settings can contribute to a more distinctive browser configuration.

Choose protection by coverage, compatibility, and control

There is no universal winner. Compare the actual protection you can enable in your browser and the documented behavior of any extension you are considering.

  • Coverage: Check whether the control blocks third-party cookies, known tracking content, or other techniques. Cookie blocking alone does not establish that tracking scripts or fingerprinting are blocked.
  • Default protection: Firefox and Safari/WebKit have protections described as enabled or mostly enabled by default in the cited sources; Chrome’s third-party-cookie default is different. Confirm current behavior in your installed browser.
  • Compatibility: Blocking third-party resources can interfere with login fields, forms, payments, comments, and videos. Social widgets and other embedded components may also fail or work differently. [Mozilla Support: Enhanced Tracking Protection in Firefox for desktop] [MDN: Third-party cookies]
  • Browser support: Verify that the particular extension supports your browser and platform; do not infer support from another browser’s availability.
  • Usability and control: Consider whether you can see what is being blocked and make a targeted exception if a site you need breaks. Firefox, for example, exposes a protection dashboard and per-site controls. [Mozilla Support: Enhanced Tracking Protection in Firefox for desktop]
  • Fingerprinting: Look for specific documentation about fingerprinting rather than treating a general “tracker blocker” label as proof of fingerprint resistance.

There is no directly comparable effectiveness percentage in the cited sources. They describe mechanisms and trade-offs rather than a shared test measuring browser settings against extensions, so a single numerical ranking would not be justified.

Use the same questions when comparing two extensions: Does the developer explain whether it uses known tracker lists, behavioral learning, or another documented approach? Does it support your exact browser and platform? Does it explain how you can troubleshoot a broken site? The research here documents Privacy Badger as one example, but it does not establish that it is the best extension for every reader or provide a measured head-to-head comparison with other tools.

Also separate what a tool claims from what the sources actually establish. A list of blocked categories describes intended coverage, not a guarantee that every site or tracking method will be caught. A browser’s default setting tells you what protection starts enabled, not how much tracking that browser stops compared with another. A careful comparison is more useful than a winner declared without a common test.

Set up protection without making sites unusable

  1. Start with your browser’s built-in controls. Check the privacy or tracking-protection settings for your browser and enable the available protection you are comfortable using. In Firefox, Standard Enhanced Tracking Protection is enabled by default according to Mozilla; if you choose Strict, be prepared to troubleshoot sites that depend on blocked content. In Safari/WebKit, protections are mostly enabled by default according to WebKit. In Chrome, do not assume third-party cookies are blocked by default; check the current setting. [Mozilla Support] [WebKit] [MDN]
  2. Use the browser normally and notice specific failures. Identify the affected site and feature—for example, an embedded video, payment flow, login, or comment form—rather than disabling protection across the board.
  3. Consider an extension if you want an additional layer. Review how it identifies or blocks trackers, its stated browser and platform support, and its controls. EFF’s Privacy Badger is one documented example; its behavior should not be generalized to other extensions. [EFF: Privacy Badger] [EFF: Privacy Badger factsheet]
  4. Make a site-specific exception only if needed. In Firefox, use the address-bar shield control to turn off Enhanced Tracking Protection for the affected site. This keeps the change targeted; it also reduces protection on that site. [Mozilla Support: Enhanced Tracking Protection in Firefox for desktop]
  5. Reassess the exception if the site works again. If the feature remains broken, the cause may not be tracking protection. Avoid treating a global disablement as the default fix.

Make troubleshooting specific. Note whether the failure is a login, a payment step, a video, a comment form, or another component. Then change one relevant control for that site, if your browser provides one, and see whether the feature works. If it does, you have evidence that the protection affected that feature; if it does not, the cause may lie elsewhere. This is a more useful diagnostic than turning protections off everywhere, which weakens protection on sites that were working normally.

When an exception fixes a feature, it is a trade-off: allowing the relevant content on that site reduces protection there. Keep the exception limited to the site where it is needed, and revisit it if your needs or the site’s behavior change. Firefox’s per-site shield control provides this kind of targeted option. The cited research does not establish that every browser or extension offers an identical exception mechanism, so check the controls for the specific product you use.

There is no need to add an extension simply because it exists. Start by understanding the browser’s built-in settings, then decide whether a particular extension’s documented approach fills a gap that matters to you. If an extension’s support or behavior is unclear, do not assume it works on your browser or provides a specific kind of fingerprinting resistance.

What neither option can promise

Tracker blocking is not anonymity. Tracking is broader than cookies and known scripts, and fingerprinting can use browser characteristics rather than a conventional tracking cookie. EFF says completely blocking trackers is difficult even with a full-featured blocker, and cautions that unusual privacy settings may contribute to a browser’s distinctiveness. [EFF: Cover Your Tracks]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, WebKit’s stated effort to prevent covert and cross-site tracking should not be read as a promise that every tracking method is eliminated. A practical setup reduces some forms of tracking while preserving the sites and functions you rely on; it does not make every online activity untraceable. [WebKit: Tracking Prevention Policy]

So the practical answer to “Which one or combination is best?” is: keep built-in browser protection enabled, because it is an integrated starting point and may already be active; add a reputable, well-supported extension if its documented coverage is useful on your browser; and use per-site exceptions only to resolve a real compatibility problem. This is a sensible balance, not a claim that the combination defeats all tracking or that every extension improves every browser configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use a browser’s built-in privacy protection and an extension together?

That is a reasonable layered approach: enable the browser’s built-in protection first, then add a well-supported extension if its documented coverage suits your browser. Neither layer guarantees that all tracking is blocked.

Does blocking third-party cookies stop all trackers?

No. Third-party cookies are one tracking mechanism. Cookie blocking does not by itself establish that tracking scripts, fingerprinting, or other methods are blocked.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will tracker blocking break websites?

It can. Blocking third-party resources may disrupt logins, forms, payments, comments, videos, or social widgets. If a feature you need fails, troubleshoot that site and use a site-specific exception where the browser provides one.

Does a tracker blocker make me anonymous?

No. Tracker blocking can reduce some tracking, but it cannot promise anonymity or prevent every tracking and fingerprinting technique.

Which browser blocks third-party cookies by default?

According to the cited sources, Firefox has Total Cookie Protection when Enhanced Tracking Protection is enabled, and WebKit documents default third-party-cookie blocking. MDN says Chrome does not block third-party cookies by default except in Incognito or when the user configures blocking. Check current settings because browser behavior can change.

Is Firefox Strict mode always the best choice?

Not necessarily. Mozilla lists broader blocking in Strict mode, including all cross-site cookies and tracking content in all windows, but also warns that stricter protection can break site features. Standard protection is enabled by default; choose based on your needs and troubleshoot specific failures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Privacy Badger work in every browser?

No extension should be assumed to work in every browser or on every platform. EFF’s factsheet lists Chrome, Firefox, Firefox for Android, Edge, and Opera for Privacy Badger. Verify current support for your exact browser and device before installing.

Is there a proven percentage showing extensions are more effective than browser settings?

No directly comparable effectiveness statistic is provided by the cited sources. They describe different mechanisms and trade-offs, not a shared test that ranks browser settings and extensions by a common percentage.

What should I do if a site breaks after I enable protection?

Identify the specific failing feature first, such as a login or video. If your browser offers a per-site exception, try it only on that site; in Firefox, the address-bar shield can turn off Enhanced Tracking Protection for an affected site. That reduces protection there, so avoid disabling protection globally as a first step.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Start with the privacy protections built into your browser, then add a reputable tracker-blocking extension if its documented coverage and browser support fit your needs. Browser defaults differ, and either layer can interfere with site features. Use targeted exceptions to troubleshoot, but remember that no setting or extension blocks all tracking or guarantees anonymity.
