A browser can send file data directly to another browser with a WebRTC data channel, while the receiving browser writes incoming chunks to a user-selected file. That avoids routing the file bytes through an application server and avoids requiring the finished file to be assembled in memory as one large Blob. It does not, by itself, remove the need for connection setup, guarantee a particular transfer speed or maximum file size, or make the File System Access API available in every browser.
What a browser-to-browser transfer actually needs
WebRTC’s RTCDataChannel carries arbitrary data between peers. MDN describes the data path as peer to peer: the file bytes do not pass through the web or application server. That statement is about the data transfer, not about how the browsers discover one another or exchange the information needed to connect. A typical design still uses a signaling path to exchange connection setup information before the peers can communicate. MDN’s WebRTC data-channel guide documents the channel and its peer-to-peer role.
A practical flow is: a sender selects a file, the peers establish an RTCPeerConnection and data channel, and the sender sends bounded pieces of the file. The recipient chooses a destination and writes each received piece to it. “No server in the file-data path” is more precise than “serverless”: signaling and other application functions may still involve a server.

Why large files should travel in chunks
Calling send() repeatedly without checking the channel’s state can queue far more data than the browser can send promptly. The data channel exposes bufferedAmount, which reports queued outbound data, and bufferedamountlow, which can notify an application when the buffer falls below a threshold. Use these mechanisms to bound how much data is waiting in memory instead of enqueueing the entire file at once. MDN’s data-channel guide describes this buffering and low-buffer event pattern.

Choose a chunk size for the negotiated connection
There is no universal safe large-message size to hard-code. WebRTC negotiates a maximum message size through the SDP max-message-size attribute. If that attribute is absent, MDN says a 64 KiB default is assumed; this is a protocol default, not a promise that every browser and peer can send every message of that size in every situation. The browser’s send() documentation warns that limits vary by browser and peer. Keep chunks within the effective limit for the established connection and handle send failures rather than assuming one setting works everywhere. See MDN’s message-size discussion and MDN’s send() reference.
Chunking also helps responsiveness
Where message interleaving is unavailable, a large data-channel message can delay other messages on that channel. Smaller bounded messages make it easier to apply backpressure and avoid letting one long message monopolize the channel. They do not guarantee a particular throughput or latency; those depend on the connection and implementation.

Write received chunks to a file instead of building one huge Blob
The File System API provides file handles and writable streams. A receiving application can obtain a destination selected by the user, write each incoming chunk to a FileSystemWritableFileStream, and close the stream when the transfer is complete. This design avoids requiring the application to collect the entire completed file into one in-memory Blob before saving it. It does not eliminate all resource constraints: available storage, browser limits, and implementation details still matter. MDN lists downloading files larger than 1 GB as an example use case for the API, not as a guaranteed maximum or benchmark. See the MDN File System API guide.
File saving is gated by browser support and user permission
File pickers are not an invisible background write mechanism. The user chooses a destination, and relevant picker methods require a secure context and a user gesture. In particular, showSaveFilePicker() is marked as having limited availability, so an implementation must check its browser support and provide a fallback appropriate to its audience. The exact fallback depends on the product: it may offer a conventional download flow or explain that saving directly to a chosen location requires a supported browser. Consult MDN’s showSaveFilePicker reference for the method’s availability and requirements, and its File System API guide for the broader API.

Because the picker requires a user action, request the destination at a deliberate point in the transfer flow rather than assuming the page can open it whenever it wants. Also plan what the interface should do if the user cancels, denies access, or the API is unavailable; the API documentation does not prescribe an application’s recovery behavior.
What transport encryption does—and does not—establish
MDN says WebRTC data-channel traffic is encrypted using DTLS. That is transport encryption, not proof that the person on the other end is the intended recipient, that the application has authenticated the peer, or that the received file is safe. If a product needs identity verification or content integrity checks, it must implement and validate those separately; the API-level properties alone do not establish them. The same distinction applies to privacy: keeping file bytes off an application server reduces that server’s role in the data path, but says nothing by itself about signaling data or what either endpoint does with the file.

What an implementation should validate
- Connection setup: establish how peers exchange connection information; peer-to-peer transfer does not explain signaling by itself.
- Message limits: respect the effective negotiated maximum and handle send errors instead of relying on a universal chunk size.
- Backpressure: use
bufferedAmountand a low-buffer notification pattern to keep the outgoing queue bounded. - Incremental saving: write received chunks to the writable stream and close it only after the application has determined the transfer is complete.
- Browser and permission paths: test supported picker behavior and a fallback for unsupported browsers, cancellation, or denied access.
- Trust and recovery: define peer authentication, integrity verification, and disconnect/restart behavior as application requirements; the cited API documentation does not establish those features for a particular implementation.
These platform capabilities make a large-file browser transfer feasible as an architecture, but they do not verify any specific project’s multi-gigabyte result, speed, browser matrix, or reconnect behavior. Those claims require measurements from the actual implementation and test conditions.
