I built a browser-based toolbox for the small jobs that interrupt development: formatting JSON, encoding or decoding Base64, trying a SQL query, and converting time values. The point was to keep those tasks together and make local processing the design goal—especially when the input is a snippet I would rather not send to an unfamiliar processing service.

That goal needs a precise boundary: “in-browser” says where computation happens, not whether a site makes other network requests or provides complete privacy. Without project code or network-behavior evidence, I can’t claim that this particular toolbox sends no data, uses no analytics, or stores nothing. Here’s what local-first tooling can mean, and what it cannot promise on its own.

Why put JSON, Base64, SQL, and time tools together?

These are quick, bounded tasks: inspect a JSON response, decode a value, test a query against sample data, or translate a timestamp. Each can be useful without becoming a full application. Keeping them in one toolbox cuts down on context switching; making the processing local can also avoid handing the input to a remote service for the actual transformation.

The privacy motivation is practical rather than absolute. A developer may be handling an internal API response, a customer record, or a query against data that should not be pasted into an unknown website. A local-processing design can reduce exposure to a remote processor, but it does not make sensitive data safe in every other respect.

What “in-browser” does—and doesn’t—tell you

A browser can execute JavaScript locally, including substantial tasks. But the phrase “runs in your browser” describes the execution location, not the entire lifecycle of a page or its data. A website may load code and other assets over the network; it may also make requests for analytics or other services. Whether user input is sent anywhere depends on the implementation.

For this toolbox specifically, the available project details do not establish which scripts or assets it loads, whether it makes requests after the page opens, whether it uses analytics, or how it handles persistence. So “100% in-browser” should be read as the intended processing model—not as verified proof that there are no network requests or that inputs never leave a device.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • What local processing can help with: avoiding transmission of an input to a remote service for processing, if the operation truly runs locally.
  • What it cannot prove by itself: that the page has no other network traffic, that no data is stored, or that the device and browser profile are secure.
  • What to verify: the implementation, its network behavior, any third-party assets, analytics, and whether results or inputs are saved.

MDN’s guidance on privacy on the web emphasizes data minimization and responsible handling, while also noting that browser capabilities and timing can contribute to fingerprinting. Local execution is one useful boundary, not a substitute for considering the rest of the environment.

Can SQL run in a browser?

Yes. One example is sql.js, a library that compiles SQLite for use in JavaScript environments, including the browser. Its documentation describes a WebAssembly build that requires loading a separate .wasm asset. This shows that browser SQL is technically practical; it does not establish that this toolbox uses sql.js or any particular database library.

There is also a persistence trade-off. The sql.js documentation says its virtual database runs in memory and does not persist changes by default. It can export a database as a typed array, but an application must decide whether and how to offer that export. For any browser SQL tool, check whether your work disappears when the page closes, remains in browser storage, or can be exported. The answer is implementation-specific.

Base64 is not encryption

Base64 represents bytes using a text encoding. It can make data easier to move through systems that expect text, but it does not make the content confidential: someone who obtains the encoded value can decode it. Don’t treat Base64 as a way to protect a password, token, or other secret.

Encryption is a different operation, involving cryptographic algorithms and keys. Even when cryptography runs on the client, it is not automatically safe: MDN warns that Web Crypto API primitives are easy to misuse and that sound key management and system design are difficult. Its documentation cautions, “It’s very easy to misuse them, and the pitfalls involved can be very subtle.” See MDN’s Web Crypto API guidance before treating browser cryptography as a security design.

Local code still needs safe input handling

Running code on a user’s device does not excuse unsafe implementation. OWASP’s Developer Guide warns against passing untrusted data directly to eval and recommends proper JSON serialization for user-supplied data. A toolbox should treat pasted content as input to handle carefully, not as code to execute.

Local processing also does not secure the computer itself. SQL for Files makes that limitation explicit in its guidance on private local data analysis in the browser: local work does not replace device security, browser-profile hygiene, file controls, or organizational policies. That is general advice, not an independent audit of this toolbox.

Who this toolbox is for—and what to check first

A local-first toolbox is most useful when you want convenient transformations and want to avoid sending input to a remote processing endpoint. For sensitive work, make the decision based on verified behavior rather than the label alone.

  • Inspect the project’s code or documentation to see where each operation runs.
  • Check whether opening the page loads third-party scripts or assets, and whether later actions trigger network requests.
  • Look for a clear explanation of analytics, storage, clearing behavior, and any export option.
  • Use sample or non-sensitive data if those details are unknown.
  • Follow your organization’s rules for confidential data; a local tool is not an exception to them.

The aim is a convenient place to handle routine JSON, Base64, SQL, and time tasks while keeping processing local where the implementation supports it. The privacy claim should go no further than the code and observable behavior can establish.
