A browser-based application is software you use through a web browser: the browser loads and runs the app’s interface and code, while the browser, a remote server, or both handle its processing. It is interactive software rather than just a page for reading, and whether it works offline depends on how it was built.
What is a browser-based application?
The RFC Editor defines a browser-based application as “an application that is dynamically downloaded and executed in a web browser, usually written in JavaScript.” JavaScript is common, but it is not required; browser applications can use other supported runtimes, including WebAssembly. RFC 10017
In practical terms, you open the software in a browser and interact with it there. It may let you edit a document, manage a project, or complete another task. The key distinction is functionality: the W3C describes web applications as having locally executable interactive elements and persistent state, unlike simple web content that primarily presents information. The browser displays the interface and executes some of the application’s code. The app may also send requests to a server or API, which can process information, store data, or provide services. Some apps do much of their work in the browser; others depend more heavily on a server; many divide the work between the two. UK Government End User Device Technical Framework

That means “browser-based” describes how you access and run the software, not where every part of its processing happens. The browser remains the user-facing environment even when the app relies on remote systems.
How is an app different from a regular website?
The boundary is about what the software does, not simply whether it has a web address. A content-focused site mainly presents information. A browser-based app offers interactive features and may preserve state—for example, retaining a user’s work or preferences. One web property can include both informational pages and app-like functionality, so it is more precise to describe the task a particular part performs than to label every page an app.

Is a browser-based app the same as a single-page app?
No. A single-page application (SPA) is one kind of browser-based application, not the whole category. The RFC notes that browser-based applications are sometimes called SPAs, but its definition covers software executed in a browser more broadly. A browser app’s architecture should not be assumed from the label alone. RFC 10017

Not always. An app can store resources locally so it can start without first contacting a server. That does not guarantee that every feature will work offline: access to current data, accounts, or remote services may still require a connection. Offline capability is an implementation choice, not part of the definition. W3C Mobile Web Application Best Practices and W3C guidance on offline technology

How does it compare with a native app?
A browser-based app runs through a browser environment; a native app runs in an operating system’s application runtime. The distinction does not by itself tell you which option is better. Installation or install-like options, offline support, device features, and compatibility depend on the specific app and the browsers, devices, and operating systems it supports.
| Aspect | Browser-based app | Native app |
|---|---|---|
| How you access it | Through a web browser; whether it can also be installed varies by app. | Through an operating system’s app environment. |
| Where it executes | In a browser runtime, sometimes with server-side processing. | In a native operating-system runtime. |
| Connectivity | Offline use depends on locally available resources and whether the task needs remote data or services. | Offline use depends on the app’s design and its need for remote data or services. |
| Compatibility | Depends on supported browsers, devices, and browser capabilities. | Depends on supported operating systems and devices. |
These are broad architectural differences, not guarantees about a particular product. Check the app’s own supported platforms and offline capabilities before relying on them.
