The practical distinction is mass plus orbital context. A brown dwarf is a substellar object above the deuterium-fusion limit but below the mass needed for sustained ordinary hydrogen fusion. An exoplanet, under the International Astronomical Union (IAU) Commission F2 working definition, is below that deuterium limit, orbits a star, brown dwarf or stellar remnant, stays below the specified mass ratio to its central object, and meets the minimum mass or size used for planets in the Solar System.

The often-quoted dividing value is 13 Jupiter masses for an object of solar metallicity. It is a calculated convention, not a visual test or a universal boundary that resolves every discovery. Astronomers combine estimated mass, orbit, age, spectra and probable history, and some free-floating objects remain genuinely difficult to label.

What is the difference between a brown dwarf and an exoplanet?

Both are colder and dimmer than ordinary stars, and both can have atmospheres containing clouds and molecules. The decisive physical question is whether the object is above or below the threshold at which its interior can fuse deuterium, a heavy isotope of hydrogen. The IAU working definition uses that threshold as the principal mass boundary: objects above it are brown dwarfs, while objects below it can qualify as planets only if the orbital, mass-ratio and minimum-size conditions are also met. The value currently calculated for solar-metallicity material is 13 times Jupiter’s mass.

Brown dwarfs still do not have enough mass to maintain the ordinary hydrogen fusion that powers stars. NASA describes them as objects that form by gravitational contraction of gas, like stars, but never become stellar hydrogen-burning bodies. They can cool substantially after formation and become faint, especially at visible wavelengths. An exoplanet is identified in relation to a central object and an orbit, not simply by being cool, dark or smaller than a star.

These statements describe a classification framework rather than an easy observing rule. A telescope does not show a label reading “planet” or “brown dwarf.” Researchers infer mass and orbital properties from measurements, then use spectra and age estimates to test whether the classification is physically plausible.

The IAU working definition, in plain language

The IAU Commission F2 review, amended in August 2018, sets out a working definition rather than a law of nature. Its exoplanet category requires all of the following:

  • Mass below the deuterium-fusion limit. For solar-metallicity objects, the calculated reference value is 13 Jupiter masses. The limit changes with the physical assumptions used for an object, so the number should not be treated as exact for every composition or age.
  • An orbit around a qualifying central body. The central object may be a normal star, a brown dwarf or a stellar remnant.
  • A central-object mass ratio below about 1/25. This prevents a near-equal-mass companion from being called a planet merely because it is in orbit.
  • The minimum mass or size used for planets in the Solar System. The working definition therefore excludes arbitrarily tiny bodies even when they orbit a star.

The same review classifies substellar objects above the deuterium limit as brown dwarfs regardless of where they are found or how they formed. In other words, a brown dwarf can orbit a star, orbit another brown dwarf, or travel through space without a detected host.

Brown dwarf and exoplanet compared

Question Brown dwarf Exoplanet
Mass and fusion Above the deuterium-fusion limit in the IAU framework, yet below the mass needed for sustained hydrogen fusion. NASA says brown dwarfs can reach up to about 70 Jupiter masses; OpenStax gives an educational range of roughly 13–80 Jupiter masses. Below the deuterium-fusion limit in the IAU framework; the cited solar-metallicity reference is 13 Jupiter masses, subject to the definition’s qualifications.
Orbit May be free-floating or part of a system. Orbit alone does not turn an object into a planet. Must orbit a star, brown dwarf or stellar remnant and satisfy the IAU mass-ratio and minimum-size requirements.
Formation Often associated with collapse of a gas cloud, as stars form, but formation pathways can overlap with those of planets. Often associated with assembly in a disk around a star; an object can later be ejected, creating a classification problem for free-floating cases.
Observational clues Estimated mass, age, infrared brightness, temperature and molecular absorption. Brown dwarfs cool and may become very faint. Orbital evidence, an estimated mass, transit or direct-imaging signal, and atmospheric spectra where available.

The mass and orbit rows express the formal convention. The formation row is an explanatory model and is not, by itself, a reliable test for an individual object.

Is a brown dwarf just a giant planet?

No. A brown dwarf can look planet-like because it is substellar, cools over time and may have clouds, methane or water in its atmosphere. The interior physics and the deuterium-fusion history are different, however. A brown dwarf is also not a normal star: it lacks the mass to keep hydrogen burning in its core.

“Failed star” is a convenient popular phrase, but it is incomplete. It can suggest that every brown dwarf began as an ordinary star and simply fell short. NASA instead describes gravitational contraction of gas, while observations and models allow more than one formation route. Some objects that formed in a disk may be massive enough to cross the deuterium threshold, and some objects born in a cloud may end up at planetary masses. Formation history is therefore useful context, not a substitute for measuring mass and applying the working definition.

Atmospheric similarity also does not erase the distinction. A young giant planet can remain hot and self-luminous, while an older brown dwarf can be cool and faint. Two objects with similar temperatures can still belong to different categories because their masses, central objects and mass ratios differ.

How many times Jupiter’s mass makes something a brown dwarf?

The short answer is “around 13 Jupiter masses,” but the complete answer needs the qualification. The IAU value is the calculated deuterium-fusion limit for solar-metallicity material. It is not a universal measurement that applies identically to every composition, age or evolutionary model.

The upper end is also described differently by reputable educational sources. NASA states that brown dwarfs can be up to about 70 times Jupiter’s mass. OpenStax’s Astronomy textbook presents a simplified range of approximately 13–80 Jupiter masses. These figures should remain attributed to their respective sources rather than merged into a single precise boundary. Above the brown-dwarf regime, objects eventually become massive enough for sustained hydrogen fusion and are classified as stars.

An estimated mass of 12 or 14 Jupiter masses does not automatically settle the label. Measurement uncertainty can be comparable to the difference between those values, and the IAU definition also asks whether the object orbits an allowed central body, has the required mass ratio and reaches the Solar System’s minimum planet size. Astronomers report the uncertainty and the assumptions behind the mass estimate before assigning a category.

Can a brown dwarf orbit a star?

Yes. A brown dwarf may orbit a star in a binary or wider planetary system. Its orbit does not make it an exoplanet when its mass lies above the deuterium-fusion limit. Under the IAU working definition, an exoplanet’s central object can be a star, brown dwarf or stellar remnant, but the candidate itself must remain below the limit and below the approximately 1/25 mass ratio.

This is why an orbiting companion cannot be classified from its orbital period alone. A long-period companion might be a planet, a brown dwarf or a low-mass star. Radial-velocity data can reveal the host star’s wobble, but the resulting minimum mass must be combined with inclination information or other observations to determine which regime is likely.

Can a planet float through space without a star?

Objects with planetary masses can travel without a currently detected host, but whether to call them “exoplanets” depends on the definition being used. The IAU working definition requires an exoplanet to orbit a star, brown dwarf or stellar remnant. It therefore does not classify free-floating young-cluster objects below the deuterium limit as planets under that convention; terms such as “sub-brown dwarf” or “planetary-mass object” may be used instead.

NASA reports continuing disagreement for some free-floating bodies. In its discussion of young objects below 10 Jupiter masses, researchers note that the available evidence may not reveal whether an object formed in a star-like cloud or in a disk and was later ejected. Without a known orbit or formation history, two astronomers can use different labels while agreeing on the measured temperature and estimated mass.

The safest wording is to state what is known: for example, “a free-floating object with an estimated mass below 10 Jupiter masses.” Add “brown dwarf,” “planetary-mass object” or another term only after explaining which convention supports it.

How do astronomers tell a brown dwarf from a planet?

No single instrument provides a universal brown-dwarf detector. Astronomers combine several kinds of evidence, each answering a different question.

1. Measure orbital motion

For an object that appears to orbit a star, the radial-velocity method measures the star’s back-and-forth motion caused by the companion’s gravity. The amplitude and period constrain the companion’s mass, although the unknown tilt of the orbit can leave a minimum-mass ambiguity. Transit observations can add the object’s radius and orbital period, while timing variations or astrometric measurements can improve the dynamical mass.

NASA’s exoplanet detection guide explains radial velocity, transits and other complementary methods. Orbital evidence is especially important because the IAU definition is explicitly tied to a central object.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Use microlensing for isolated or distant systems

Microlensing detects a temporary brightening when a foreground object’s gravity magnifies light from a more distant background star. The event can reveal a low-mass companion even when the system is too faint or too far away for ordinary imaging. Because the alignment is usually brief, follow-up measurements may be limited, and the event alone may not provide every property needed for a final label.

3. Image the object directly when contrast allows

Direct imaging captures light from the companion instead of inferring it solely from the host star’s motion. Current direct images have mainly found young giant planets that are still hot enough to shine on their own. Coronagraphs block much of the host star’s light so a nearby companion is easier to detect. A brown dwarf can also be directly imaged, particularly when it is young, massive or widely separated.

4. Read the infrared spectrum

Cool, low-mass objects emit much of their radiation in infrared wavelengths. A spectrograph spreads that light into a wavelength pattern, where absorption features reveal molecules and constrain temperature, gravity and composition. Water and methane are particularly useful signatures in young, faint objects. NASA researcher Ray Jayawardhana summarized the need for such evidence: “For an unambiguous confirmation of a brown dwarf or rogue planet we need to see the absorption signatures of molecules — water and methane primarily — in the spectra,”

Spectroscopy can distinguish an atmospheric state and provide clues about an object’s age and surface gravity, but it does not by itself establish the IAU category. A spectrum must be interpreted alongside mass, orbit and evolutionary models. NASA’s Webb overview of brown dwarfs describes why infrared observations are central for these cool bodies and how absorption lines are identified; see NASA’s Webb Telescope to Search for Young Brown Dwarfs and Rogue Planets.

5. Check age, gravity and evolutionary models

Age changes how bright and hot an object should be at a given mass. A young object can be inflated and luminous, while an older one of the same mass may be much cooler. Researchers compare the spectrum and luminosity with models that include age, chemical composition and surface gravity. The result is an estimated mass range, not a direct weighing. If that range crosses 13 Jupiter masses, the publication should describe the classification as uncertain rather than imply a sharp measurement.

A practical classification workflow

When reading a discovery paper or evaluating a newly reported object, follow this sequence:

  1. Identify the central object. Determine whether the candidate has a measured orbit around a star, brown dwarf or stellar remnant. If no host is detected, mark the object as free-floating rather than assuming it is an exoplanet.
  2. Find the mass estimate and uncertainty. Note whether it is dynamical, a radial-velocity minimum mass, or an estimate from evolutionary models. Record the age and metallicity assumptions.
  3. Compare the range with the deuterium threshold. Use the approximately 13-Jupiter-mass value only with its solar-metallicity qualification. A range that overlaps the threshold is intrinsically ambiguous.
  4. Apply the mass-ratio and minimum-size requirements. A sub-13-Jupiter-mass body still needs the IAU orbital, central-object, mass-ratio and minimum-size conditions to qualify as an exoplanet.
  5. Use spectra as supporting evidence. Infrared absorption from water, methane and other molecules helps characterize the atmosphere and temperature, but it does not replace the mass and orbit tests.
  6. State the convention in the final label. For a free-floating or threshold-crossing object, explain whether the source uses “brown dwarf,” “planetary-mass object,” “sub-brown dwarf” or another term.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • “Exactly 13 Jupiter masses always means brown dwarf.” The value is a solar-metallicity deuterium-fusion calculation, and classification also depends on orbit, mass ratio and minimum size.
  • “Every free-floating planetary-mass body is an exoplanet.” The cited IAU working definition requires an orbit and does not call free-floating young-cluster objects planets under that convention.
  • “Brown dwarf” means “failed star” and nothing more. The phrase omits the distinct deuterium threshold and the possibility of overlapping formation routes.
  • A spectrum alone settles the category. Molecular absorption identifies atmospheric conditions; mass, orbital context, age and the chosen definition remain necessary.
  • Brown dwarfs are simply oversized versions of familiar planets. Their masses can be much higher, their interiors can have burned deuterium, and their formation history may be star-like even when their atmospheres resemble those of giant planets.

Why the boundary remains scientifically useful

The boundary is valuable because it gives researchers a shared vocabulary for comparing objects discovered by different techniques. It separates a deuterium-burning substellar regime from the lower-mass planetary regime while acknowledging that observations are uncertain and formation histories overlap. The convention also prevents a common category error: treating “orbits a star” as sufficient to make any companion a planet.

For readers, the most reliable summary is therefore conditional: a brown dwarf is generally above the deuterium-fusion limit and below sustained hydrogen fusion; an exoplanet is below that limit and satisfies the IAU orbital, mass-ratio and minimum-size criteria. Objects near the threshold or without a host should be described with their measured properties and uncertainties rather than forced into a definitive label.
