A “Clear Paper Jam” warning on the Brother MFC-J6540DW can remain even when no whole sheet is visible. Small paper scraps, a foreign object, paper-feed setup, or dust on the pick-up rollers can trigger jam-related problems. Start with the location shown on the printer’s LCD, then check the accessible paper path and setup before trying the model’s paper-scrap removal procedure.
Why the warning can appear when no sheet is visible
A full sheet is not the only possible cause. Brother lists paper scraps or foreign objects in the paper path, incorrectly positioned paper guides, a paper support that is not fully inserted, incorrect manual-feed loading, and dust on the pick-up rollers among possible causes of jam or repeat-jam messages. The official guidance does not identify a particular sensor as the cause of a persistent warning.
Check the location shown on the LCD
Use the printer’s displayed instructions to identify the area to inspect. Follow Brother’s paper-jam clearing instructions for the MFC-J6540DW for the indicated path. Depending on the message, check the tray and front area, the rear Jam Clear Cover, the manual feed slot, and accessible interior areas for small scraps or foreign objects.

If the LCD points to the rear, open the Jam Clear Cover and slowly remove any jammed paper. Inspect accessible areas for scraps as directed, then close the cover completely. A cover that is not fully closed can interfere with normal operation.

Accessible interior
Inspect only the areas Brother’s instructions identify as accessible. If directed to check around the print-head path, look carefully for small pieces of paper in the corners. Do not force parts or reach into areas not covered by the instructions.
Rule out paper-loading and feed issues
- Check that the paper guides match the size of the paper in the tray.
- Make sure the paper support is fully inserted.
- For manual feeding, load one sheet at a time and wait for the touchscreen prompt before feeding another sheet.
- If the jam recurs, consider dust on the pick-up rollers as one possible cause and follow Brother’s pick-up roller cleaning instructions.

Run Remove Paper Scraps if jams keep happening
After repeated paper jams—three times or more—the LCD prompts you to remove scraps. You can also start the procedure from Settings > Maintenance > Remove Paper Scraps. Follow the on-screen instructions.

- Open Settings > Maintenance > Remove Paper Scraps, if the printer has not already prompted you.
- Load the included Maintenance Sheet into the manual feed slot in landscape orientation.
- Follow the instructions on the touchscreen.
Brother permits one sheet of thick A4- or Letter-size paper, such as glossy paper, as a substitute if the Maintenance Sheet is unavailable. If the message still will not clear
For listed persistent errors, Brother advises checking inside for scraps or foreign objects and, if the message continues, disconnecting the machine from power for several minutes before reconnecting it. This is a limited troubleshooting instruction, not a guaranteed reset for every jam warning. If the message remains after the prescribed checks, contact Brother support or service rather than assuming a specific sensor has failed. Because the MFC-J6540DW supports faxing, check Brother’s caution before disconnecting power: stored faxes can be transferred to a computer or another fax machine first to avoid losing them. The caution appears in the model-specific jam FAQ.
