Broadcom says new VMware vDefend IDPS capabilities can use distributed virtual patching to block workload-level exploits in the hypervisor while administrators deploy software patches. The August 6, 2026 announcement names vDefend SSP 5.2 and vDefend 9.1.1 as compatible with VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.1. This is a vendor-described security control—not an antivirus agent installed directly on an ESXi host—and Broadcom says it is intended to buy time for patching, not replace it.
What does VMware hypervisor protection mean here?
In this announcement, “hypervisor protection” refers most directly to vDefend IDPS distributed virtual patching. Broadcom says the capability blocks workload-level exploits in the hypervisor while teams roll out software patches. The claim is specific to the announced vDefend feature; it should not be read as a general guarantee that VMware hosts are immune to exploits.
VMware Cloud Foundation is the platform context. Broadcom identifies vDefend SSP 5.2 and vDefend 9.1.1 as compatible with VCF 9.1. Check the release notes, subscription entitlements, and deployment prerequisites for the exact environment before planning an installation or upgrade. The announcement does not establish that every VCF or vDefend version supports the feature.

Virtual patching is described as a way to block exploitation while the underlying software patch is being deployed. Broadcom says vDefend IDPS applies distributed protection to workload-level exploits in the hypervisor. The practical distinction is timing: a security control may reduce exposure during a patch rollout, but the vulnerable software still needs to be patched.

Broadcom’s August 2026 release does not provide independent validation of the virtual-patching claims. Its performance figures are vendor-reported and based on Broadcom internal testing in July 2026. Treat them as stated test results, not independently verified benchmarks or a promise of throughput in a particular production configuration.
Which VMware security capabilities were announced?
The August 6, 2026 release covers more than IDPS virtual patching. The announcements span workload security, deployment options, and application networking:
Rank #2

- ATP 1-2-3: a deployment workflow for advanced threat protection.
- Malware sandboxing: on-premises sandboxing, with support for air-gapped environments.
- Security Services Platform: a two-node option. Broadcom says this model can use up to 33% less physical hardware; that is a vendor estimate based on its test results, not a general outcome for every deployment.
- Avi Load Balancer: native API protection for virtual machines, vSphere Kubernetes Services, and AI workloads.
- Performance updates: Broadcom reports the following maximum figures for its security capabilities.
| Capability | Broadcom-reported maximum | Evidence qualification |
|---|---|---|
| vDefend IDPS distributed virtual patching | Up to 17 Gbps per server and up to 17 Tbps per VCF instance | Broadcom internal test results from July 2026; not an independent benchmark. |
| vDefend Distributed Firewall | Up to 22 Gbps on servers with 25G NICs; up to 75 Gbps on servers with 100G NICs; up to 75 Tbps per VCF instance | Broadcom internal test results from July 2026; not an independent benchmark. |
Actual results depend on the deployment and configuration; the release’s maximum figures should not be assumed for a specific environment. Broadcom vice president and general manager of the Application Networking and Security Division Umesh Mahajan said the updates are intended to provide “the protection, performance, and automation” needed to defend application infrastructure at scale.
How is IDPS virtual patching different from the Distributed Firewall?
Both capabilities are associated with vDefend, but they are not the same feature. Broadcom describes vDefend Distributed Firewall as built into the hypervisor and applying security to workloads through an API-driven model. It was described as an Advanced Service for VCF in a March 2025 release. The August 2026 announcement’s specific hypervisor-protection claim is about IDPS distributed virtual patching.

When assessing controls, match the protection layer to the problem: exploit blocking during patch rollout, workload segmentation, endpoint protection inside a guest operating system, or network and API protection are different functions. A firewall capability should not be presented as evidence for the IDPS virtual-patching claim, or vice versa.
Can you install antivirus or an EDR agent directly on ESXi?
Broadcom Support says third-party agents and antivirus software are not supported directly on ESXi hosts or the vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA). ESXi is a specialized runtime, not a general-purpose operating system for off-the-shelf security tools. Broadcom points to integrated security features and configurable controls for host protection, and recommends EDR inside supported guest operating systems.

Broadcom’s stated host-security practices include:
- Use Secure Boot.
- Configure
execInstalledOnly. - Use Lockdown Mode.
- Install security patches.
- Consider agentless monitoring or anti-malware approaches where appropriate, weighing the exposure created by enabling SSH.
- Use EDR within supported guest operating systems rather than installing unsupported agents directly on ESXi or VCSA.
How should teams evaluate the announcement?
For an enterprise deciding whether the update fits, compare security controls by layer and verify operational details for the actual VCF deployment. A useful review should answer these questions before implementation:
- Threat and protection layer: Is the requirement to block a workload-level exploit during patching, segment workloads, protect guest operating systems, or secure application APIs?
- Platform compatibility: Do the installed VCF and vDefend versions meet the compatibility and prerequisite requirements in the relevant release documentation?
- Deployment conditions: Does the design need on-premises sandboxing or support for an air-gapped environment?
- Operational workflow: How will virtual patching fit into the organization’s patch rollout, and how will teams confirm that the underlying software is subsequently updated?
- Evidence quality: Are performance estimates vendor-reported, independently measured, or validated in the organization’s own environment?
The 2023 Broadcom Data Center Security: Server brief describes a separate, historical product for NSX: agentless anti-malware and network IPS for workloads, with scanning offloaded to a Security Virtual Appliance. That dated product description is not the August 2026 vDefend announcement and does not establish current availability. Do not treat the two as interchangeable.
