Broadband download speed is the rate at which data travel from the internet to your device, usually measured in megabits per second (Mbps). It describes one part of an internet connection—not its upload speed, latency, reliability, or the speed you will experience at every moment.
What does broadband download speed mean?
Download speed measures how quickly data arrive from the internet at your device. Loading a web page, receiving a file, and streaming video all involve data coming down to you. Broadband plans commonly state this rate in Mbps, or megabits per second.
Mbps measures bits transferred per second. It is not the same as MB/s, or megabytes per second: a byte contains eight bits. A broadband plan’s Mbps figure should therefore not be read as the number of megabytes a file downloads each second.

Upload speed measures data moving in the opposite direction: from your device to the internet. Sending a large attachment or transmitting your camera video during a call uses upload capacity. A speed written as 25/3 Mbps means 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload in the FCC benchmark context; it does not mean the two directions perform identically.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Is download speed the same as internet speed?
Not exactly. “Internet speed” is often used casually to mean download speed, but connection performance has several dimensions. Latency—the delay before data begins to travel back and forth—and reliability, or how consistently the connection works, also affect the experience. Latency and reliability can be especially important for real-time calls, gaming, and uninterrupted access, where a high download rate alone may not prevent delays or dropouts.
What does the FCC’s 25/3 Mbps benchmark mean?
In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission has used 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload as its fixed-broadband deployment assessment benchmark since 2015, according to the U.S. Government Accountability Office’s 2023 report. The FCC reviews whether to change that benchmark as part of its annual deployment assessment.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
That figure is a regulatory yardstick for assessing deployment, not a universal technical definition of broadband, a guarantee of the speed a household will receive, or proof that the connection is sufficient for every household. Its meaning depends on the assessment in which it is used.

A plan disclosure, an advertised maximum, and a speed-test result describe different things. The FCC’s broadband-label materials discuss typical speed disclosures and note that experienced speed can be affected by factors such as your equipment, the number of devices operating, network congestion, nearby customers’ network use, and—in wireless service—distance from a cell site. A test taken at one time measures performance under those conditions; it is not a promise of constant speed.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
How should you compare broadband speeds?
Look at what each number represents before comparing services. The FCC National Broadband Map shows provider-reported availability and maximum advertised download and upload speeds for locations. Those figures are not the same as typical speeds in a broadband label or a speed measured on your own connection. The map’s location search lets you inspect providers, technologies, and reported speeds by address. Its default fixed-service view hides services below 25 Mbps download; filters can reveal them.
- Download speed: the rate data arrive at your device.
- Upload speed: the rate data leave your device for the internet.
- Latency and reliability: separate performance characteristics that can matter for responsive, uninterrupted use.
- Figure type: check whether a number is typical, an advertised maximum, or a result measured under specific conditions.
There is no single “good” download speed established for every household or activity. What is adequate depends on what people do online, how many devices and uses overlap, the service technology, and whether upload speed, latency, or reliability is important to them.
