The Breville Smooth Wave BMO840BSS is a 34 L stainless-steel turntable microwave with sensor reheat, inverter power control and shortcut presets, according to Breville Australia. The catch is availability: Breville marks the Australian BMO840 discontinued, and publicly visible CHOICE material does not disclose its expert test results. If you are considering one, check the exact model, condition and electrical rating before buying.
What the BMO840BSS is—and whether it is still available
Breville Australia identifies the stainless-steel model as BMO840BSS2JAN1 and marks the BMO840 discontinued. CHOICE also marks the BMO840BSS discontinued and lists a price of $479; that is a listed price, not confirmation of current stock or a current sale price. Exact-model listings may be limited, so verify the model number, seller, condition and local availability before purchasing. Breville Australia’s BMO840 page and CHOICE’s BMO840BSS page identify the product and its status.
Specifications: keep the sources and markets distinct
Published figures differ slightly by source. The dimensions are broadly consistent when rounded, but the wattage figures do not match. Neither source explains the difference, so treat each number as belonging to its listing rather than assuming one corrects the other.

These are source-specific published specifications, not a guarantee that every used or regional unit has the same label or condition. Breville Australia’s figures apply to its Australian model listing. Its 240 V specification is a reason not to assume this unit can be connected safely in another electrical market or is interchangeable with a related North American model.

How Sensor iQ, inverter control and presets are intended to work
Sensor iQ Smart Reheat
Breville says Smart Reheat detects steam from food and automatically sets cooking time and power. That describes the manufacturer’s intended sensor function; it is not independent evidence that every food, portion size or container will heat evenly. The microwave also offers Smart Cook and Smart Defrost programs. Breville’s product page lists these features.
Power Smoothing inverter
Breville describes its inverter as adjusting power intensity rather than relying on an on/off approach. This is a design description, not a guarantee of a particular reheating or defrosting result. For a meaningful performance comparison, look for independent tests of the exact BMO840 model; the available public material does not establish those results.

Convenience controls and noise claims
The feature list includes 15 smart presets, an LCD, an inside-door shortcut panel for tasks such as melting chocolate and softening butter, and an “A Bit More” control that adds 30 seconds. Breville also lists a child lock, mute or sound controls, and a soft-close door. It claims the door is “80% quieter” and operation “50% quieter,” but the product page does not provide enough detail about the comparison behind those percentages to treat them as independently verified measurements.
What independent testing can—and cannot—tell you
CHOICE’s public BMO840BSS page provides product information but keeps its expert rating, scores, pros and cons, and detailed test results behind membership access. Its public listing therefore does not support a verdict about how well this exact model cooks, reheats or defrosts.

RTINGS has a review titled “the Smooth Wave,” reviewed July 10, 2024 and modified August 6, 2026. It reports measurements for its tested product, including 34 L advertised volume and 31.3 L measured volume. The available evidence does not establish that RTINGS tested the exact BMO840BSS, so those measurements should not be used as BMO840-specific specifications. Read the RTINGS review with that model distinction in mind.
Fit, placement and electrical checks before purchase
Measure the space using the appliance’s full depth with handle and leave room for the installation clearances required by the exact manual. CHOICE lists guidance of 20 cm clearance above and 10 cm at the sides, and says the microwave should not be placed in a cabinet. Confirm these instructions against the BMO840 manual and the installation requirements for your location before choosing a position.

- Check the rating plate for the exact model and electrical requirements; Breville Australia lists 240 V for its BMO840.
- Measure width, height and depth, including the handle, and account for required ventilation clearances.
- Confirm that the turntable diameter and usable cavity suit the dishes you actually use.
- For a used unit, check the door, turntable, controls and interior condition, and ask for a demonstration if practical.
The BMO840 instruction manual says the appliance requires proper grounding and installation according to its instructions. It warns that whole eggs and sealed containers can explode, and says servicing beyond cleaning should be carried out by qualified personnel or through Breville support. It may suit someone who specifically wants the listed sensor programs, shortcut controls and stainless-steel design, and who can confirm a safe, correctly rated unit at a reasonable local price. The public evidence does not establish independent performance results for the exact model, and its discontinued status makes stock and condition especially important.

If you cannot find a suitable BMO840, compare currently sold microwaves by local availability and warranty, capacity and usable cavity dimensions, footprint and ventilation needs, voltage and wattage, turntable layout, sensor and defrost controls, and independent tests for the exact model.
