The Breville Multi Chef BRC600 combines rice cooking with steaming, risotto, sauté/sear and low- or high-temperature slow cooking. Its versatility is the main reason to consider it; the trade-offs are a non-stick bowl that needs careful handling and public owner complaints about wear and reliability that are anecdotal, not a measured failure rate.
What the BRC600 does
Breville Australia lists the current model as BRC600BSS. It has settings for rice, steam, risotto, sauté, and low- and high-temperature slow cooking, plus automatic keep warm. That makes it more versatile than a rice-only appliance, particularly if you want to sear ingredients or steam food without moving to another pot.
The Australian listing specifies 760 W, 220–240 V, dimensions of 31.9 × 29.5 × 26.9 cm, and a one-year replacement warranty. It includes a stainless-steel steaming tray, measuring cup and serving spoon. Breville lists a 10-cup rice capacity and a separate 3.7 L slow-cooker capacity. Those figures describe different uses and should not be treated as equivalent measures. The manual says the 10 supplied cooker scoops can make up to 20 scoops of cooked rice, but that is a scoop-based yield, not a metric volume measurement.

Use the supplied rice scoop rather than assuming it is a standard kitchen cup. The 2013 instruction booklet says one scoop holds 150 g of uncooked rice and corresponds to 180 ml of water. For white rice, its basic ratio is one scoop of rice to one scoop of water; for brown rice, use one scoop of rice to one-and-a-half scoops of water. Do not fill past the bowl’s 10-scoop maximum line. How it handles rice, risotto and slow cooking
Rice
The manual advises spreading the rice evenly in the bowl and keeping the lid in place during cooking. After the cycle, turn the rice over and let it stand for 10–15 minutes. Rice mode switches automatically to keep warm for up to five hours, then the cooker switches off.

Risotto
Risotto is a dedicated function, and the manual specifies a keep-warm period of up to 30 minutes after the cycle. The accessible evidence establishes the setting and instructions, but does not provide independent performance testing of the finished risotto.

Steaming and slow cooking
The included tray is intended for steaming foods such as vegetables, seafood and poultry. For low- or high-temperature slow cooking, keep liquid between the bowl’s MIN and MAX marks. The cooker’s combination of sauté/sear and slow-cook settings lets you brown ingredients in the appliance before a slower cooking stage, rather than relying on a slow-cook-only design.

Cleaning and protecting the bowl
The removable cooking bowl has a non-stick coating. Breville’s manual does not recommend putting the bowl, steaming tray or glass lid in a dishwasher. It also warns against abrasive cleaners, steel wool and metal scouring pads, and recommends wooden or plastic utensils to help avoid scratching the coating.
- Hand-wash the bowl, tray and lid; avoid abrasive tools and cleaners.
- Use wooden or plastic utensils in the bowl.
- Keep the lid’s steam vent pointed away from you and use heat-protective gloves when removing hot parts.
These care requirements matter when weighing convenience: the cooker offers several functions, but its key removable parts are not intended for dishwasher cleaning.
