Neither setup is universally better. The right choice depends on how you value counter space, workflow simplicity, component choice, current combined price, and service arrangements for the exact models available in your market. Breville’s Barista Express BES870 puts a conical burr grinder and espresso machine in one appliance. Breville also presents a separate-component example pairing the Bambino Plus with a Baratza Encore ESP. The manufacturer materials describe how these products work, but they do not provide an independent taste, reliability, or lifetime-cost test that proves one arrangement wins for everyone.
What the two setups actually are
An integrated setup combines the grinder and espresso machine in one chassis. The Barista Express BES870 is the clearest example in the supplied product documentation: its grinder doses coffee directly into the portafilter, so grinding and brewing happen at one station.
A separate setup uses two products selected independently. Breville’s U.S. comparison page names the Bambino Plus espresso machine alongside a Baratza Encore ESP grinder. That listing establishes a real grinder-plus-machine configuration; it is not evidence that every separate combination performs the same way. How the integrated Barista Express BES870 workflow works
Grinding and dosing
The U.S. BES870 instruction manual documents an integrated conical burr grinder with adjustable grind size and grind amount. It supports automatic single- or double-dose selection and hands-free grinding directly into the portafilter. The machine also uses filter-size dosing, so the selected basket size and the amount setting are part of the preparation routine.
- Choose the single- or double-shot setting appropriate to the basket you are using.
- Set a starting grind size and grind amount.
- Position the portafilter so the grinder can dose into it without being held throughout grinding.
- Inspect the dose and adjust the grind setting or amount when the resulting flow or taste calls for a change.
- Tamp and lock the portafilter into the group head, then run the programmed or selected shot volume.
The exact starting setting is not a universal recipe. Breville’s manual explains that grind size changes the rate at which water flows through the basket and therefore changes espresso taste. It advises beginning with a suggested setting and adjusting as required. Coffee freshness, basket choice, dose, and your preferred extraction all affect where that setting ends up.
Brewing and steaming features documented by Breville
The same manual lists PID temperature control, a thermocoil heating system, low-pressure pre-infusion, a pressure gauge, preset or programmable shot volumes, a steam wand, and a dedicated hot-water outlet. These functions describe the machine’s controls and hardware. They are not independent measurements showing that the BES870 produces better-tasting or more reliable espresso than a separate machine.

How the separate Bambino Plus and Encore ESP example works
Two products, two stages
With the separate configuration named by Breville, the Encore ESP performs the grinding and the Bambino Plus performs the espresso-machine functions. You grind into a suitable dosing container or portafilter, prepare the basket, and then move the portafilter to the Bambino Plus for brewing. The grinder is not physically controlled by the espresso machine, so each product has its own operation, cleaning routine, power connection, and warranty relationship.
- Confirm that the grinder and machine are the exact models and electrical versions intended for your region.
- Set the Encore ESP to a starting espresso grind and grind the amount needed for your selected basket.
- Transfer or dose the grounds into the portafilter, distribute them, and tamp consistently.
- Insert the portafilter into the Bambino Plus and run the desired shot program.
- Change the grinder setting or dose when water flow and taste indicate that the extraction needs adjustment.
The important difference is not a guaranteed flavor result; it is control over the shopping list. You can investigate the grinder and machine as distinct products, but the sources supplied here do not prove generalized advantages in upgradeability, repairability, replacement cost, or longevity. Those questions must be answered from the specific manufacturers’ service terms and parts availability for your market.

Counter space, movement, and daily workflow
Integrated arrangement
One appliance can make the sequence easier to organize: place the portafilter under the built-in grinder, prepare the dose, and move the same portafilter to the group head. It also means the grinder’s location, controls, and capacity are tied to the espresso-machine model you bought. Assuming separate components automatically mean better upgrade value
Two products give you two purchasing decisions, but the supplied sources do not establish a universal upgrade, repair, or savings advantage. Investigate the exact service and parts situation before relying on that assumption.

The manual specifically says grind size affects water flow and taste and directs users to adjust it as needed. Treat dialing in as part of normal use, whether the grinder is built in or separate.
