Choose the Barista Pro (BES878) if faster advertised readiness, an LCD-guided interface and finer adjustment steps fit your routine and the live price premium is acceptable. Choose the Barista Express (BES870) if you want simpler button controls, a visible extraction-pressure gauge or a lower current price. Both are semi-automatic machines with integrated conical-burr grinders and manual milk steaming, and the published specifications do not establish a taste or extraction winner.
Express vs. Pro at a glance

Breville lists the shared features and model specifications on its official comparison page and the US product pages for the BES870 and BES878.
What the two machines actually do
Both machines combine three jobs that are separate on a traditional café setup: grinding whole beans, brewing espresso and steaming milk. You still prepare the coffee puck, start the extraction and texture milk yourself. The integrated conical-burr grinder removes the need for a separate grinder, while the 54 mm portafilter gives both models the same basic basket format.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesShared semi-automatic workflow
- Fill the bean hopper and select a grinder setting.
- Grind into the 54 mm portafilter, distribute the grounds and tamp the puck.
- Lock the portafilter into the group head and start the volumetric shot.
- Steam and texture milk manually when making a milk drink.
- Knock out the puck and wipe, purge and clean the brewing and steaming areas according to the applicable manual.
This workflow is more involved than a capsule or fully automatic machine, but it lets you adjust grind, dose preparation and milk texture. Neither model automatically dispenses a finished latte or cappuccino without that hands-on work.

Where the Barista Pro has an advantage
Faster advertised readiness
The Pro uses a ThermoJet heating system with PID control. Breville says its “Innovative heating system achieves ideal extraction temperature in 3 seconds” in the 2023 Barista Pro manual. The US product page presents the same three-second readiness message. This is a manufacturer specification, not an independently measured comparison against the Express, so treat it as a convenience claim rather than a guaranteed time in every electrical, ambient-temperature or preparation condition.
For a drink made during a short morning routine, less waiting can matter more than any other specification. If you make several drinks in a session and leave the machine ready between them, the startup difference may matter less.
LCD guidance instead of a pressure dial
The Pro presents settings and prompts on an LCD with buttons and customizable controls. That layout can make a new user’s first adjustments easier to follow because the machine communicates selections on-screen. It also reduces the need to interpret a separate analog gauge while learning.
More listed grinder positions
Breville lists 30 grinder settings for the Pro, compared with 16 for the Express. More positions provide smaller adjustment steps when a shot is running slightly too quickly or slowly. They do not, by themselves, prove that the burrs grind more evenly, that the grinder is quieter or that espresso will taste better. Those outcomes depend on beans, freshness, preparation and technique, none of which are established by the specification count.
Longer US warranty listing
Breville’s US pages list a two-year limited warranty for the Pro and a one-year limited warranty for the Express. Confirm the current terms, registration requirements and service coverage for your country and exact model suffix; a regional comparison page should not be used as a US warranty promise.
Where the Barista Express makes more sense
Direct controls and a pressure gauge
The Express uses buttons and includes an extraction-pressure gauge. The gauge gives you a visible indication of brewing pressure while a shot runs, which some learners find useful when diagnosing preparation problems. It does not measure flavor, and a gauge reading alone cannot tell you whether a shot tastes balanced.

A simpler interface
With no LCD menu to navigate, the Express has a more straightforward control layout. Buyers who prefer physical controls, do not need guided prompts or already know their preferred settings may find that simplicity preferable to the Pro’s display.
Potentially better value
The Express is the value choice only when its current price is meaningfully below the Pro’s price in your market. Breville’s published pages do not establish a permanent price difference, and promotions change. Compare the two live listings, include delivery and tax, and decide how much the Pro’s interface and advertised startup are worth to you.
Heating, energy and what the specifications do not prove
Thermocoil versus ThermoJet
Express uses a Thermocoil system and Pro uses ThermoJet; both include PID temperature control. PID indicates electronic temperature regulation, but the names alone do not establish that one machine produces better-tasting espresso. There is no independent extraction, flavor, workflow-timing or reliability test in the available official material that ranks the two systems.
Energy-use claim
On the Pro page, Breville reports up to 32% lower annual energy use versus a Thermoblock system, based on its internal benchmark testing in November 2022. That is a narrow manufacturer comparison with a stated test date, not a measured Express-versus-Pro household result. Your consumption will vary with warm-up frequency, idle time, drink volume and local electricity conditions.
No published cup-quality winner
The feature sheets establish hardware and controls, not a sensory outcome. Do not buy either model on the assumption that 30 grinder positions, ThermoJet or the pressure gauge guarantees better espresso. Fresh beans, grind adjustment, puck preparation, water and milk technique can dominate the result.
Choose by your daily priorities
| If this sounds like you | Best fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You want the shortest advertised warm-up and like on-screen prompts. | Barista Pro | ThermoJet and the LCD interface target those priorities. |
| You prefer physical buttons and want a pressure gauge while learning. | Barista Express | Its control layout and gauge are the defining usability differences. |
| You frequently fine-tune grind in small increments. | Barista Pro | It lists 30 grinder positions instead of 16; that is adjustment flexibility, not a quality guarantee. |
| You want the lowest cost for the same basic grinder, portafilter and manual-steaming workflow. | Whichever has the lower live price | The core preparation steps are shared, so pay for Pro conveniences only if you will use them. |
| You need automatic milk drinks with minimal hands-on work. | Neither | Both require manual milk texturing; consider a different machine category. |
| You need a warranty term longer than one year in the United States. | Barista Pro, subject to current terms | The US product page lists two years for Pro versus one for Express. |
Use the exact country and model when applying this table. Voltage, included parts, service arrangements and warranty language can change by region.

How to set up either machine for consistent results
The following sequence keeps the two models’ shared workflow clear. Use your model’s manual for button names, cleaning cycles and safety instructions.
- Verify the identity of the machine. Confirm BES870 or BES878, the regional voltage and the suffix printed on the carton or rating label. Do not assume a listing for one country is suitable for another.
- Inventory the box. Check the portafilter, baskets, grinder parts, milk pitcher and any dosing funnel or dose-trimming tool against the regional contents list. Breville documentation lists such puck-preparation accessories, but retailer bundles can differ.
- Prepare water as directed. Follow the regional manual’s guidance on the reservoir, filter and descaling. Water hardness and filter availability vary, so do not transfer a maintenance interval from another country.
- Start with a repeatable bean and grind setting. Change one variable at a time. The Pro’s 30 positions and Express’s 16 positions are starting ranges, not recipes that work for every bean.
- Prepare the puck consistently. Grind into the 54 mm portafilter, distribute grounds evenly and tamp level. Inconsistent preparation can mask the effect of a grinder adjustment.
- Use the volumetric control, then evaluate the cup. Observe flow and taste rather than treating a gauge position or a programmed volume as proof of quality.
- Texture milk manually. Purge and wipe the steam wand as specified, introduce air at the beginning of steaming and finish with a smooth texture. The machine does not automate this step.
- Record changes. Note bean, grinder position and preparation changes so you can return to a setting that works.
Maintenance and practical ownership
Routine cleaning
Both machines need regular attention because coffee oils, wet grounds and milk residue remain in the brewing and steaming paths. Empty the puck, rinse the portafilter and baskets, wipe and purge the steam wand after milk use, and follow the cleaning-cycle prompts and schedules in the applicable manual. Breville lists cleaning tablets, descaler and water filters as compatible maintenance items, but the correct part and interval depend on the regional manual and your water.
Accessory fit
A dosing funnel or dose-trimming tool can reduce spills around the portafilter. Check whether it is already included and verify that it is designed for the 54 mm format before buying an accessory. A retailer’s bundle may not match the contents of another regional package.

Beans and storage
Because both machines grind whole beans, buy beans that you can use while fresh and store them according to the roaster’s guidance. The machine choice cannot compensate for stale coffee or a grinder setting that is never adjusted as beans age.

The shot runs too quickly
Check puck distribution and tamping first, then move the grinder toward a finer position in a small step. Change only one factor before testing again. On the Express, the pressure gauge can provide an additional visual clue, but it is not a flavor meter.
The shot runs too slowly
Confirm that the basket is not overfilled, the puck is not excessively compacted and the grinder is not set too fine. Move coarser in a small step and retest. The exact adjustment path and safety instructions are model-specific.
Rank #4
- MANUAL HAND-TEXTURED MICROFOAM: The powerful steam wand included with this cappuccino and latte machine is designed to quickly turn milk into smooth, flavorful microfoam for latte art at home
- INTELLIGENT DOSING: The smart dosing system in this bean-to-cup espresso machine automatically calculates and adjusts the level of fresh coffee for a precise dose, every time
- PRECISION MEASURMENT: Espresso coffee maker also includes a smart system which auto corrects the next dose, taking the guesswork out of manual espresso making
- RECEIVE 2 FREE BAGS OF SPECIALTY COFFEE: Included when you purchase and register any Breville coffee machine; T&Cs apply
- ASSISTED TAMPING: Replicating the action of a professional barista, assisted tamping features 7 degree 'barista twist' finish and consistent 10kg of pressure, for a polished puck surface and clean tamp face
Milk texture is uneven
Make sure the wand is clean and purged, keep the pitcher position stable and introduce air consistently before rolling the milk. Since both models use manual steaming, technique is a larger variable than the choice between their displays.

Check the electrical supply, reservoir placement and the model’s readiness indicators. The Pro’s three-second statement is a manufacturer claim for reaching extraction temperature under stated design conditions, not a promise that every complete drink—including grinding, puck preparation and steaming—finishes in three seconds.
You cannot find a replacement part
Use the model number and region when searching Breville’s support documentation. BES870 and BES878 parts are not automatically interchangeable merely because both machines use a 54 mm portafilter.
Price, warranty and regional checks before purchase
Prices are volatile, so use the current US Express listing and Pro listing rather than an old screenshot or cached deal. The Pro page showed $849.95 at a 2026 capture; that figure is a dated reference, not a guaranteed selling price. No comparable Express price is established here.
Before checkout, confirm:
- The seller’s listing names the intended BES870 or BES878 variant.
- The electrical voltage and plug match your country.
- The stated warranty is valid in your purchase region and starts under the advertised conditions.
- The box contents include the accessories you expect.
- Returns and service are available where you live.
Breville’s Mexican comparison page is useful for cross-checking shared features, but its localized prices and warranty should not be applied to US buyers.

Both machines can suit a beginner who is willing to learn grinding, puck preparation and milk steaming. The Express exposes pressure feedback in a simple control layout; the Pro offers an LCD and more grinder positions that may make incremental adjustment feel more guided. Neither removes the need to practice.
If you are deciding between them as a first espresso machine, visit a store or borrow a similar semi-automatic setup if possible and decide whether you enjoy the hands-on process. If you want to press one button for coffee and automatically textured milk, neither model matches that requirement.
Final buying decision
Buy the Barista Pro (BES878) when its LCD workflow, 30-position grinder and manufacturer-advertised three-second readiness solve a real daily inconvenience and the live regional price gap is acceptable. Buy the Barista Express (BES870) when you value direct buttons and an extraction-pressure gauge or when its current price leaves enough savings to justify choosing the simpler interface. Treat both as capable, hands-on espresso platforms—not as guaranteed differences in taste—and verify your country, voltage, warranty and included accessories before paying.
