Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) are benchmark prices, not two universal grades that determine the price of every barrel of oil. Brent is the waterborne, North Sea-linked marker used throughout international trade. WTI is the U.S. light, sweet crude marker priced at Cushing, Oklahoma. Their locations, transport options, market exposure and representative quality differ, so their prices can move together, diverge sharply or change which one is higher.

Whenever you see an “oil price,” check the benchmark, location, contract or spot series, currency, barrel unit and date. A Brent quote and a WTI quote answer different market questions.

What Brent and WTI actually represent

They are pricing benchmarks

A benchmark is a reference price used to value many other crude streams. Producers, refiners, traders and news organizations may quote a crude grade as a premium or discount to a marker. The differential reflects the barrel’s quality, transportation cost, regional or global supply and demand, and refinery economics. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) explains these pricing relationships in its overview of crude benchmarks: Benchmarks play an important role in pricing crude oil.

That means Brent is not the price of every barrel produced near the North Sea, and WTI is not the price of every barrel produced in the United States. They are reference points against which other grades are negotiated.

Brent: a waterborne, North Sea-linked marker

Brent is associated with crude produced in the North Sea and traded through a waterborne market. In a historical EIA explanation, the benchmark blend included Brent and Forties from offshore U.K. fields and Ekofisk and Oseberg from offshore Norway. That description explains the benchmark’s origins; it should not be read as a statement that today’s eligible streams or contract rules are frozen in that four-stream arrangement.

Because Brent is connected to ports, tankers and marine storage, cargoes linked to it can reach multiple consuming regions. The Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) describes Brent as a global price barometer for approximately 80% of crude and emphasizes its access to shipping, ports and storage. The 80% figure is ICE’s published estimate, not an independently measured universal total: ICE oil and alternative fuels overview.

WTI: a U.S. marker priced at Cushing

West Texas Intermediate is U.S.-produced light, sweet crude whose benchmark price is tied to Cushing, Oklahoma. Cushing is an inland storage and pipeline hub, so the quoted value incorporates the economics of getting crude into or out of that location. EIA identifies WTI as a reference for other U.S. grades, including Mars and Bakken, and for some crude imported from Canada, Mexico and South America.

WTI’s location is as important as its chemistry. A barrel with the same broad quality description can command a different value when pipeline capacity, storage availability, refinery demand or export access changes.

These are benchmark-level descriptions, not guarantees about every cargo or contract. A quoted price also depends on whether the number is a physical spot assessment, a futures settlement or an index calculation.

Are Brent and WTI the same quality?

Both are generally described as light and sweet. “Light” refers to relatively low density, commonly expressed as API gravity. “Sweet” means relatively low sulfur. Light, sweet crude is often attractive to refineries because it can yield a useful mix of products with less sulfur-removal work than heavier or more sour feedstocks.

They are not chemically identical. CME Group’s educational comparison gives WTI an API gravity just under 40 and sulfur content of 0.24%, versus Brent sulfur content of 0.40%: CME’s benchmark comparison. Treat those as representative figures cited by CME, not an invariant specification for every stream, shipment or delivery month. Individual crude assays and contract rules can differ.

Why API gravity and sulfur matter

  • API gravity: A higher number generally indicates a lighter crude. Refineries may value light feedstock differently depending on their equipment and product slate.
  • Sulfur: Lower sulfur usually means less desulfurization work and can reduce compliance costs, although the value depends on the refinery.
  • Yield and contaminants: Metals, acidity and the proportions of gasoline, diesel, jet-fuel and residual components can also affect a barrel’s value.

Consequently, a grade can trade above or below a benchmark even when both are called light and sweet.

Why Brent and WTI prices diverge

The two benchmarks represent different markets. Their spread—the Brent price minus the WTI price—moves as physical supply, transport and refinery conditions change. EIA lists four broad categories that explain differentials: crude quality, transportation costs, regional and global supply and demand, and refinery utilization.

Location and transport

Brent’s waterborne setting allows cargoes to be redirected by tanker when arbitrage works. WTI’s Cushing price is inland and depends more directly on pipelines, storage tanks and connections to refineries or export terminals. If crude production grows faster than the pipelines serving Cushing, local supply can weigh on WTI. If marine freight, port access or overseas demand changes, Brent can respond differently.

Regional and global supply

North Sea output, disruptions in major exporting regions and demand from importing countries can move Brent-related prices. U.S. production, Canadian flows, Mexican supply and domestic refinery runs can have a larger immediate effect on WTI. These markets interact, but they do not have identical inventories or bottlenecks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Refinery utilization

Refineries buy particular feedstocks to match their equipment and product demand. Seasonal maintenance, outages or a sudden need for gasoline or middle distillates can change the value of one crude relative to another. A refinery’s location also determines whether Brent-linked or WTI-linked supply is cheaper after freight and pipeline costs.

Quality differentials

Even small differences in sulfur, density or yield can change a crude’s value. The benchmark spread is therefore not a pure measurement of geography; it includes the market’s changing assessment of usable refinery value.

Inventories and storage economics

Storage availability affects an inland benchmark particularly strongly. When tanks are scarce, nearby crude can be discounted to encourage movement or processing. When inventories are tight, prompt barrels can gain a premium. Futures curves, financing costs and expectations about future supply also influence transactions, although a futures quote is not the same thing as a physical spot price.

A dated example of the Brent–WTI spread

For the week ending October 2, 2026, EIA’s weekly spot series reported:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Series Weekly average
WTI — Cushing, Oklahoma $98.07 per barrel
Brent — Europe $120.03 per barrel
Brent minus WTI $21.96 per barrel

Brent was therefore higher by $21.96 per barrel in that particular observation. It is not a live quote and does not establish a permanent Brent premium. EIA says its weekly, monthly and annual values are unweighted averages of daily closing spot prices. Check the series definitions and current observations at EIA Spot Prices for Crude Oil and Petroleum Products.

A spread can narrow, disappear or reverse. Comparing two numbers without matching their dates, units and price type can create a false impression of a lasting relationship.

Spot prices, futures and benchmark indexes are different numbers

Spot price

A spot assessment describes the value of crude for near-term physical delivery under the series’ stated location and methodology. The EIA weekly figures above are spot-price averages, not exchange-traded futures settlements. EIA’s definitions and source notes are available at EIA’s spot-price table definitions.

Futures price

A futures contract is a standardized financial or deliverable agreement for a specified delivery month. Its price reflects expectations, financing and storage economics as well as current physical conditions. News reports often call a futures settlement “the oil price,” but it is not interchangeable with a spot observation.

Brent indexes and physical markets

ICE says its Brent Index reflects the average price of trading in the prevailing North Sea cash or forward market for the relevant delivery month, as reported and confirmed by industry media. That methodology is distinct from a simple daily spot average: ICE Brent Index. When reading a quote, identify whether it is an index, a cash assessment, a forward price or a futures contract.

How widely each benchmark is used

Brent’s international role

EIA calls Brent the most widely used global crude benchmark. It is commonly used for crude traded in Europe, the Mediterranean and Africa, and for some cargoes in Australia and Asia. Its waterborne nature makes it practical as a reference for internationally shipped oil.

WTI’s U.S. role

WTI is the principal U.S. marker. Domestic producers and refiners use it to reference grades that may differ in quality but share U.S. logistics or market exposure. It can also be relevant to some imports from nearby producing countries, but that does not make it the universal price for all Western Hemisphere crude.

“Global” and “U.S.” describe typical market reach, not exclusive ownership of a benchmark. Both prices are watched worldwide because traders compare them when evaluating shipping routes, refinery margins and regional opportunities.

Historical scale: why benchmark volume is not the same as global production

EIA reported average Brent crude loadings of 0.86 million barrels per day in 2013, compared with world crude production of 76 million barrels per day. Brent-linked pricing influenced far more trade than the physical volume in that loading figure because a benchmark can price related grades through differentials. The figures are historical scale illustrations, not current production or loading estimates.

How to read an oil-price headline correctly

  1. Name the benchmark. Determine whether the report means Brent, WTI or another marker.
  2. Check the location. “WTI” generally points to Cushing; “Brent” may refer to a North Sea-linked index, a Europe spot series or a futures contract.
  3. Identify the price type. Look for spot, cash, forward, futures settlement or index language.
  4. Check the date and delivery month. A prompt futures contract and a later delivery month can differ substantially.
  5. Confirm the units. Most reported figures are U.S. dollars per barrel, but a publication may convert currencies or use a different volume unit.
  6. Compare like with like. Calculate a spread only when both observations use compatible dates, methodologies and units.
  7. Look for the physical explanation. Pipeline outages, refinery maintenance, inventory changes, sanctions, storms, shipping rates and production changes can all affect the relationship.

Common misconceptions

“Brent is always more expensive than WTI”

No. Brent was higher in the EIA week ending October 2, 2026, but the ranking changes with logistics and market conditions. A historical premium is not a law of the market.

“WTI is the price of all U.S. oil”

No. WTI is a reference marker. U.S. grades such as Mars and Bakken can trade at premiums or discounts because their quality and transport routes differ.

“Light and sweet means identical”

No. Those labels describe broad characteristics. Sulfur, API gravity, yield, contaminants, location and contract terms still influence value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A headline quote tells me what a refinery paid”

Not necessarily. A refinery may pay a differential to a benchmark and incur freight, pipeline, blending, insurance and other costs. The headline may also show a futures or index price rather than a physical transaction.

“The historic Brent blend list is the complete modern specification”

No. The four-stream description is a dated EIA account of the benchmark’s composition. Current eligibility and contract rules should be taken from the applicable ICE specifications rather than inferred from that historical explanation.

Which benchmark should you use?

For international shipping and global news

Brent is usually the more relevant starting point because it is waterborne and widely used in international pricing. Still, verify the publication’s exact Brent series and delivery terms.

For U.S. production and inland logistics

WTI is generally the natural reference when the question concerns Cushing, U.S. domestic grades or pipeline and storage conditions in the central United States.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a company pricing a physical cargo

Use the benchmark specified in the sales contract, then apply the agreed quality, location, timing and freight differentials. A generic web quote cannot replace those contractual terms.

For students and general readers

Start with geography: Brent is a waterborne North Sea-linked marker; WTI is an inland U.S. marker at Cushing. Add quality and logistics only after identifying which market each number represents.

Key takeaways

  • Brent and WTI are benchmark references, not universal prices for every crude grade.
  • Brent is North Sea-linked and waterborne; WTI is priced at Cushing, Oklahoma.
  • Both are broadly light and sweet, but representative CME figures show WTI at 0.24% sulfur and Brent at 0.40%, with WTI API gravity just under 40.
  • Transport, storage, refinery use, quality and regional or global supply and demand drive the spread.
  • Neither benchmark is permanently more expensive.
  • Always identify the benchmark, location, price type, delivery date and currency before interpreting an oil-price headline.
