Brave comes with three privacy protections enabled by default: Shields blocks many third-party ads and trackers, fingerprinting defenses reduce some stable browser identifiers, and HTTPS upgrades try to secure connections to sites that still use HTTP links. These features address different risks; none makes you anonymous, and stricter settings can interfere with some sites.
1. Shields blocks many third-party ads and trackers by default
Brave says its Shields protections are enabled by default. They block third-party ads and trackers, cross-site cookies, and some fingerprinting signals. You can inspect blocked items and adjust protections for an individual site in the Shields panel. That makes the browser usable without first installing a separate content blocker, but it does not mean every ad or tracker will be caught.
Brave’s Shields overview describes the protections, while its Shields support guide explains the controls. If a page stops working, open Shields for that site and change only the setting that appears to be causing the problem. Blocking scripts or all cookies can disrupt site features, so making every control stricter is not always practical.

Cookies are not the only way a site may distinguish one browser from another. Browser fingerprinting combines details about the browser and device—such as available language preferences or other exposed signals—to create an identifier. Brave says its protections randomize or limit some of these signals, reducing their usefulness as stable identifiers.

That is a risk-reduction measure, not a guarantee that a site cannot recognize you. In its explanation of language fingerprinting, Brave describes limiting the language preferences exposed to sites and discusses its approach alongside Chrome’s protections. That is Brave’s own account, not an independent benchmark of every current Chrome version; it should not be read as a definitive present-day ranking of the two browsers.
3. HTTPS upgrades try to secure HTTP connections
When you enter or follow an HTTP address, Brave says it attempts to connect using HTTPS instead. If the site does not support HTTPS, it can fall back to HTTP. Brave also describes upgrading or blocking some insecure subresources on HTTPS pages. These behaviors are documented in its Shields support guide.
Rank #2
HTTPS encrypts data in transit between your browser and the site, but it does not prove that the site is trustworthy or stop the site itself from collecting information. In an announcement dated February 9, 2023, Brave said HTTPS by Default arrived with Brave version 1.50 and contrasted it with Chrome’s then-opt-in HTTPS-Only Mode. That comparison describes the situation at that time; it does not establish Chrome’s current defaults. See Brave’s HTTPS by Default announcement for the dated details.

The useful distinction is not that one browser is simply “private” and the other is not. These features operate at different points: Shields limits some third-party tracking, fingerprinting defenses reduce certain browser signals, and HTTPS upgrades protect a connection in transit when a site supports HTTPS. Brave’s documentation presents these as built-in protections, but the material here does not establish an independent, current comparative measurement of privacy or performance against Chrome.

- Upload and download data speed
- - Internet security
- - Soft, light browser
- - Set desktop mode, night mode

Brave’s implementation also varies by platform: its About page describes desktop and Android versions as Chromium-based and iOS as WebKit-based. Do not assume every feature behaves identically across platforms.
