Short answer: Brave Shields is a browser feature that filters ads and trackers when you watch YouTube in the Brave browser. YouTube Premium is an account-based membership that adds ad-free viewing across supported YouTube devices, background play in its mobile apps, and in-app downloads. Choose Brave if you mainly watch in a browser and want filtering without a YouTube membership; choose Premium if you want official app, television, and offline features tied to your YouTube account. Premium Lite can suit eligible viewers who mostly watch non-music videos and accept narrower benefits.
What you are actually comparing
Brave Shields and YouTube Premium can produce a similar first impression—fewer interruptions while watching YouTube—but they operate at different layers.
Brave Shields is browser-level filtering
Shields is built into the Brave browser. When you open YouTube at the web address in Brave, Shields applies its ad- and tracker-blocking rules to that browser session. Your YouTube account does not need a paid membership for Shields to work, although you can still sign in to your normal account for subscriptions, history, and playlists.

Brave has also documented occasions when YouTube changes temporarily bypassed Shields, followed by filter or browser updates. Treat ad blocking as maintained software rather than a permanent guarantee.

YouTube Premium is an account entitlement
Premium attaches benefits to a signed-in YouTube account. YouTube describes ad-free playback on supported devices where that account is used, while background playback and downloads are delivered through the YouTube, YouTube Music, and (where available) YouTube Kids mobile apps. Eligibility and exact features can vary by country, device, video, and account status.

How ad blocking differs
What Shields can remove
With Shields enabled on a YouTube page in Brave, the browser attempts to block the advertising and tracking requests that its current lists identify. This can reduce pre-roll and mid-roll interruptions without changing the YouTube account itself. The same browser protection can also apply to other sites, which is a broader scope than a YouTube-only membership.
Because the filtering happens in the browser, its behavior depends on the current Brave release, filter lists, and YouTube’s page code. Brave has acknowledged that YouTube has at times circumvented Shields and that fixes were deployed. A video that played ad-free yesterday can therefore behave differently after a site change until Brave updates its protections.

What Premium removes—and what can remain
Premium suppresses ads served by YouTube for the signed-in membership account on supported platforms. It does not erase every commercial message inside a video. YouTube says creator-inserted sponsorships and promotions, promotional links or shelves, and some live-event or Primetime Channels promotions may still appear because they are part of the content or service presentation rather than a standard YouTube ad slot.

Choosing based on where you watch
- If almost all viewing happens at
youtube.comin Brave on a computer or phone, Shields may cover your main use without another subscription. - If you switch between a browser, smart-TV app, game console, and mobile app, Premium provides a single account-level benefit on supported YouTube devices.
- If you need predictable behavior for family members who use the official apps rather than a browser, the membership model is generally simpler to administer.
Background play and locked-screen listening
Brave on Android
Brave’s documentation identifies version 1.87 and later as bringing improved picture-in-picture and background play on Android, including lock-screen playback controls. The exact result can still depend on the handset, Android power-management settings, the page being played, and future YouTube changes. Update Brave before diagnosing a missing control, and check whether the operating system has restricted Brave’s background activity.
Brave Playlist on iOS and desktop Nightly
Brave’s Playlist feature is a separate way to collect compatible media for background or offline playback. Brave’s product information describes Playlist on iOS, while a Brave Help article updated April 24, 2026 says Playlist is currently available on iOS and on desktop Nightly. That qualification matters: the documented Playlist availability should not be read as broad Android support. Android background playback is described separately from Playlist.
Playlist keeps playback inside Brave. It is useful when you want a queue that continues with the screen locked or when network access will be unavailable, but it is not a general-purpose audio-file export tool.
YouTube Premium in mobile apps
Premium enables background play after you sign in to the YouTube mobile app with the subscribing account. YouTube also describes the feature in YouTube Music and YouTube Kids mobile apps where available. Start a video, leave the app or lock the screen, and playback can continue while the account remains entitled.

YouTube specifically excludes the Shorts player from background play. A long-form video and a Short can therefore behave differently even on the same phone and membership. If background audio stops, first verify that the content is not being viewed in Shorts, that you are signed in to the paid account, and that the app is current.
Downloads are not interchangeable
Brave Playlist: retained media inside Brave
Playlist can save compatible media for offline playback on supported devices. The saved item is managed by Brave: it cannot be moved as an independent file to another phone or computer, and Brave says items may be removed. Think of this as an in-browser cache and playlist system, not ownership of a downloadable video.
Use Playlist when your priority is convenient playback during a flight, commute, or weak-connection period and you are comfortable staying in Brave. Confirm that your device and Brave edition expose Playlist before building a large offline queue.

Premium downloads are created with the Download control in the YouTube or YouTube Music app for supported videos and songs. They are encrypted or otherwise managed by the app rather than presented as ordinary files in your device’s storage browser. The membership account and YouTube’s availability rules remain part of playback.

YouTube’s Android offline guidance says downloaded videos can generally play without a connection for up to 29 days before the app must reconnect in many countries. Some countries or regions allow up to 48 hours instead. During synchronization, YouTube can remove a download if the video is no longer available. These are temporary offline permissions, not permanent downloads.
Why a download can disappear
- The Premium or Premium Lite membership ended, was paused, or is no longer recognized on the device.
- The app has not reconnected within the applicable offline window.
- The video owner or YouTube changed the video’s availability, licensing, or download permission.
- You changed accounts, so the app no longer sees the account that created the download.
- Storage was cleared, the app was reinstalled, or Playlist removed the retained item.

Where Premium Lite fits
YouTube’s current help information describes Premium Lite as a reduced feature set available only in some regions. It offers fewer interruptions plus background playback and downloads for most videos, but excludes Shorts and music content. It also does not include YouTube Music Premium.
Lite is therefore most relevant if your library is mainly standard, non-music YouTube videos and you do not need the full music service. Check the offer shown for your country and account before relying on a particular feature; availability and terms can change independently of the full Premium plan.

Choose Brave first when
- You already prefer the Brave browser and normally watch YouTube through its website.
- Your main objective is reducing browser ads and trackers rather than obtaining a YouTube account benefit everywhere.
- You can accept that filtering may change temporarily when YouTube changes its anti-ad-blocking systems.
- You want to avoid tying the result to a recurring YouTube membership.
Choose full YouTube Premium when
- You move between official mobile, television, and other supported YouTube apps.
- Screen-locked listening in the YouTube or YouTube Music app is essential.
- You need YouTube-managed downloads and are comfortable reconnecting to preserve them.
- You want YouTube Music Premium as part of the same membership.
Consider Premium Lite when
- Your viewing is mostly regular, non-music videos.
- You want app-based background play and downloads but can do without Shorts and music benefits.
- The Lite offer is available in your region at the time you subscribe.
How to set up Brave for YouTube
- Install or update Brave on the device where you watch YouTube. On Android, use version 1.87 or newer if background play is a requirement.
- Open YouTube in the Brave browser rather than launching a separate YouTube app.
- Open the Shields control for the site and confirm that Shields is enabled. Leave the default protections in place unless a page requires a documented exception.
- Play a video and test the behavior you actually need: ad filtering, picture-in-picture, or lock-screen playback. Test on more than one video because Shorts and other formats can follow different rules.
- On supported iOS devices, add compatible media to Brave Playlist if you need Brave-managed background or offline playback. On desktop, verify that your Brave channel supports Playlist; Brave’s Help information specifically names desktop Nightly.
If ads return, do not assume your account is broken. Check the Shields state, update Brave, and retry after the browser’s filter lists have refreshed. YouTube may have changed its delivery method, and uninterrupted blocking cannot be promised.

How to use YouTube Premium downloads and background play
- Sign in to the YouTube app with the account that holds the Premium or Premium Lite membership. A different account in the app will not inherit the entitlement.
- Open an eligible video and use the app’s Download control to save it for offline viewing. For music, use the YouTube Music app when your plan includes that service.
- Test background playback with a normal video by leaving the app or locking the screen. If you are in the Shorts player, switch to a standard video because Shorts do not support background play.
- Reconnect before the offline period expires. In many countries, YouTube’s Android guidance allows up to 29 days; some regions use a 48-hour window. The app may remove items that are no longer available when it synchronizes.
- When traveling, verify regional availability and account status before disconnecting. Location, licensing, and membership changes can affect both downloads and playback.
Troubleshooting by symptom
“I still see an ad in Brave.”
- Confirm you are watching in Brave, not an embedded player opened by another app.
- Check that Shields is enabled for the YouTube site.
- Update Brave so its current filtering rules are installed.
- Allow for YouTube-side changes; Brave’s own documentation records temporary circumvention and subsequent fixes.
- Remember that creator-read sponsorships and promotions are part of videos and are not equivalent to platform-served ad slots.
“Background audio stops.”
- On Android Brave, verify version 1.87 or later and review the operating system’s battery or background restrictions.
- In YouTube, confirm the Premium account is signed in and the app is current.
- Leave the Shorts player; Premium background play does not operate there.
- Check whether the video itself permits the requested playback mode.
“My offline video is gone.”
- Reconnect the YouTube app and sign in to the account that created the download.
- Check whether the applicable 29-day or regional 48-hour offline window elapsed.
- Look for a licensing or availability change to the video.
- For Brave Playlist, confirm the item was not removed and that you are still using the same Brave installation and device.
“I cannot find Playlist.”
Playlist availability is platform- and channel-specific. Brave’s April 24, 2026 Help information names iOS and desktop Nightly. Do not infer that the iOS Playlist interface or desktop Nightly feature is present in every Android or stable desktop build; use Brave’s current Help documentation for your exact release.
Questions to check before subscribing or switching
- Where will you watch? Browser-only use favors Brave; mixed official apps and television devices favor Premium.
- Do you need true app downloads? Premium supplies YouTube-managed downloads with reconnection requirements; Brave Playlist keeps media inside Brave.
- Is music central? Full Premium includes YouTube Music Premium, while Premium Lite excludes music benefits.
- How much uncertainty can you tolerate? Shields depends on an evolving browser filter and YouTube code. Premium is an account entitlement but still follows content, location, and platform limits.
- Are you eligible for Lite? Confirm your region and read the current offer before assuming its limited benefits apply.
Recheck the Brave version, YouTube app version, region, and membership terms whenever a feature matters for travel or daily listening. These products are actively maintained, so platform and content support can change without changing the basic distinction: Brave filters the browser session, while Premium grants YouTube account benefits.
