Websites can still receive your public IP address and observe some browser and device signals when you use Brave. Brave Shields blocks many trackers and cross-site storage mechanisms, while fingerprinting protections restrict or randomize some signals. That reduces tracking, but it does not make ordinary browsing anonymous: what a site can learn depends on your settings, platform, permissions, and whether you identify yourself.
What can a website detect when you use Brave?
“Detect” can mean several different things: receiving information with a page request, observing browser features as a page runs, or learning details you choose to provide. Brave reduces some of these channels, but it cannot prevent a site from recognizing information you submit or use to sign in.
- Network information: The site you visit receives your public IP address as part of the connection. Brave explains that blocking an embedded third-party request can keep that third party from receiving your IP; it does not hide the address from the first-party site you opened. Brave’s explanation of request blocking and IP visibility makes this first-party/third-party distinction.
- Browser and device signals: A page may be able to observe browser APIs and characteristics used to render or operate it. Some of these signals can contribute to fingerprinting.
- Information you provide: A login, form submission, or other interaction can directly associate activity with information you supplied. Shields do not undo that disclosure.
- Permission-based information: If you approve a location request, the site may receive an approximate location; see the location section below.
These inputs do not, by themselves, establish that every site can identify a particular person. That depends on the site’s own account and data practices, which Brave’s browser protections cannot determine.
Does Brave stop browser fingerprinting?
No browser setting can be treated as proof that every fingerprinting method has been defeated. Fingerprinting combines multiple clues—potentially including browser and operating-system traits, graphics or audio behavior, language preferences, fonts, and hardware capabilities—to make a device or browser more distinguishable. Some of these values also support ordinary website features, so removing every signal could break pages. Brave’s technical explanations discuss this challenge in its fingerprinting overview and its discussion of privacy budgets.

Brave says Shields blocks known tracking resources and applies protections that block, restrict, or randomize some fingerprinting signals. In an update published August 13, 2026, Brave described protections beginning to roll out with version 1.93: replacing WebGL vendor and renderer strings with a generic value, emptying WebGPU adapter descriptors, and randomizing WebGL extension lists. Brave said those protections are enabled by default on desktop and Android, with a phased rollout. These are Brave’s product claims, not an independent measurement of every site or setup. The company described the design goal as “to deny trackers a stable identifier while leaving websites everything they need to render rich experiences for their users.” Read Brave’s August 2026 WebGL/WebGPU update.
What do Shields settings change?
Brave says Shields are enabled by default and block third-party trackers, cross-site cookies, and third-party storage. Settings can be adjusted, and Brave’s documentation says fingerprinting protection or Shields can be disabled for a site when compatibility requires it. A site’s behavior and the information available to it may therefore differ if you change the defaults. Brave’s Shields documentation describes the protections and controls.

Because fingerprinting can combine many data points, the careful conclusion is that Brave makes many tracking methods harder and disrupts some fingerprinting signals—not that it makes fingerprinting impossible. The exact result varies with settings, browser version, and platform.
Can a website see your location in Brave?
Location access is separate from ordinary page loading. If you grant a site location permission, Brave’s privacy policy says the site may receive an approximate location based on your IP address and operating-system information, which can include nearby Wi-Fi access-point information. The policy says this website-permission location is not sent to Brave. Declining the prompt avoids granting that location access through the browser. See Brave’s Browser Privacy Policy.

Does Brave contact safety services while you browse?
Browser service requests are distinct from information sent to a website you intentionally visit. Brave’s Browser Privacy Policy, last updated September 23, 2026, describes platform-specific Safe Browsing request routing:
- Desktop: Requests are proxied to protect the user’s IP address from Google.
- Android: Requests may expose the device IP address to Google.
- iOS: Safari-provided functionality uses Google and Tencent Safe Browsing depending on region, with Apple proxying requests.
These disclosures describe Brave’s safety-service flows, not what the first-party site receives when you open a page. Brave’s policy provides the platform details.

How can you check your browser’s fingerprinting signals?
Brave points users to the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s Cover Your Tracks tool to inspect fingerprinting protections. Brave’s August 2026 update notes that the tool reports WebGL vendor and renderer strings. Treat a result as a snapshot of exposed signals: it does not certify anonymity, test every technique, or predict what every website will do. Open Cover Your Tracks.
What changes if you use a Brave Tor window?
Brave describes Tor windows as an optional way to proxy your IP through intermediate addresses. That changes the IP information seen by a visited site compared with ordinary browsing, but it should not be confused with Shields’ tracker and fingerprinting protections. Brave’s features page describes Tor windows. The sources cited here do not establish that any one mode makes every user anonymous or prevents every form of identification.
