Brain receptor maps show where selected receptor types are found, using methods such as radioligand binding in tissue, PET imaging, and gene-expression atlases. These approaches measure different things: a gene-expression map is not a direct map of receptor-protein density, and a PET atlas assembled from many people is not an individual clinical profile.
What a brain receptor map represents
There is no single universal map of every receptor in the brain. A map describes the spatial distribution of particular receptor types or related targets, within the anatomical coverage and measurement limits of a given method. Researchers use such maps to compare molecular organization across brain regions and to relate it to anatomy, connectivity, or function.
The key is to identify the signal being mapped. Radioligand binding, PET tracer measurements, and gene transcripts are related to different stages or aspects of molecular biology; they are not interchangeable measures.
How researchers map receptors
Quantitative in vitro autoradiography
In quantitative in vitro autoradiography, researchers apply radiolabeled ligands to frozen tissue sections and measure where the ligands bind. The measurements can be rendered as receptor-density maps across anatomical positions, including regional and layer-level variation. The Jülich Brain Atlas group describes receptor fingerprints that summarize mean density and variation for analyzed receptor types across samples. Its maps are made available through EBRAINS, according to the Jülich resource description.

This allows for comprehensive neuroanatomy study of the cerebral hemispheres, brain stem and cerebellum. The 4 detachable parts are held together using magnets making it the safest model for even kids to use and study.
- 【Wide Application】 Our realistic human brain anatomical model 2-piece colour coded can as an ideal study tool for medical anatomy teachers or students, and children's interest development learning tool, which can be used in teaching explanation, doctor-patient communication, model display, learning research or laboratory exhibition.
This is a tissue-based measurement, not a scan of a living person. It can provide detailed spatial information in the examined tissue, but it does not itself provide an individual’s in-vivo receptor profile.
PET-derived maps
PET uses radiotracers to measure target binding in living people. A 2022 Nature Neuroscience study compiled PET data for 19 receptor, transporter, and binding-site targets across nine neurotransmitter systems. The atlas combined data from 1,238 healthy individuals and represented the maps across 100 cortical regions. The authors also tested analyses against an independent autoradiography dataset covering 15 receptors. See the 2022 study for its data and methods.

- 2X Life-Size Detailed Brain Model: This anatomically accurate 2X life-size human brain model clearly displays 131 labeled brain structures, allowing students and professionals to explore key regions related to memory, emotion, learning, and sensory functions with greater clarity than standard-size models.
- 4 Detachable Magnetic Parts: The brain anatomy model separates into 4 detachable sections, including the cerebral hemispheres, cerebellum, and brainstem. Magnetic connections allow easy assembly and disassembly, making it ideal for hands-on demonstrations and interactive learning.
- Color-Coded & Laser-Engraved Labeled: Brain regions are color-coded for easy identification, while precision laser engraved labels ensure structure names remain clear and will not fade, blur, or wear off even after repeated handling.
- Durable Medical-Grade Material: Made from high-quality PVC, this brain model is durable, washable, and designed for long-term educational use. The sturdy display base keeps the model stable for classroom demonstrations or desk display.
- Complete Learning Kit: The package includes 1× 2X life-size brain model (4 parts), 1× display base, 1× brain anatomy study guide, and 1× brain learning reference card, providing a complete set for teaching, studying, and understanding brain structures.
That atlas is a normative group-level compilation, not a single scan containing every target for one person. Combining tracer studies and participants requires choices about harmonization and modeling; those choices form part of what the resulting map represents.
Gene-expression atlases
Gene-expression resources show where transcripts associated with neurotransmission are expressed in sampled brain tissue, situated within anatomical reference frameworks. The Allen Human Brain Atlas documentation includes anatomical reference resources and a Neurotransmitter Study. Allen also identifies Brain Explorer 2 as desktop software for viewing neuroanatomy alongside gene-expression data; check the resource documentation for current availability and access details.

- Life Size: Life size human skull and brain model allow you clearly see all the main anatomical structures of the human skull and brain, perfect for patient education or anatomical study.
- 11 Part: The skull model consists of 3 part. The brain model consists of 8 components: sagittal section of brain, cerebral hemisphere, cerebellum and brainstem.
- Numeric Marker: The brain model features a labeled diagram for 32 numeric marker. The skull model includes a labeled diagram for 55 numeric marker.
- Material: Made of robust PVC material. Light-weight, high strength, anti-corrosion, long term service.
Transcript expression can help researchers investigate the molecular context of receptor systems, but transcript abundance is not a direct measurement of receptor protein density. A gene-expression map should therefore be described as such, rather than labeled a receptor-density map.
How the methods differ
| Method | Signal represented | Coverage described by the cited resources | Main interpretive caution | Resource access |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| In vitro autoradiography | Radioligand binding in tissue sections, quantified as receptor density | Regional and laminar maps | Measurement in tissue is not an individual living scan | Jülich maps and datasets through EBRAINS |
| PET atlas | In-vivo tracer measurements collated across studies and participants | Human cortical atlas represented in 100 regions in the 2022 study | Combined group data and harmonization choices do not make an individual’s full receptor profile | Published study atlas and data context |
| Gene-expression atlas | Transcript expression in sampled tissue | Anatomical reference context and gene-expression resources | Transcript abundance is not direct receptor-protein density | Allen atlas resources and viewer documentation |
What receptor maps can—and cannot—tell you
Maps make it possible to compare molecular profiles with other features in a shared anatomical reference space. The Jülich framework integrates receptor-expression profiles with cytoarchitectonic maps, microstructure, connectivity, and functional data. This supports questions about how molecular organization relates to brain structure and activity.

The 2022 PET atlas reports relationships between receptor profiles and aspects of structural and functional organization. Those associations can guide comparisons and hypotheses; a spatial relationship alone does not establish that a receptor distribution causes a behavior, symptom, or functional network pattern. The study also notes that how receptor systems are situated within large-scale neuroanatomy and shape emergent function remains poorly understood.

- For tissue-level regional or layer detail: look to quantitative autoradiography and check which receptors and samples are included.
- For in-vivo human tracer patterns across a broader cortical atlas: use PET-derived resources, while treating a multi-study compilation as group-level data rather than an individual profile.
- For anatomical context about genes related to neurotransmission: use gene-expression atlases, and keep transcript evidence distinct from protein-density measurements.
Before interpreting or reusing an atlas, verify its target list, anatomical coverage, sample basis, and measurement type in the relevant resource. Availability and software access can change, so consult the linked atlas documentation for current details.
