In Melanie Challenger’s argument, the self is not located in the brain alone: it is the living organism as a whole. The brain remains vital, but consciousness can be understood as the body’s way of knowing itself. That is a philosophical interpretation of biology, not a settled scientific answer to what consciousness is.
What Challenger means by saying the brain isn’t the self
Challenger’s essay challenges the habit of treating the human mind as the defining feature of life and the brain as the sole seat of selfhood. She proposes instead that selfhood belongs to the living body in its entirety. In her words: “If consciousness is the body’s way of knowing itself, then it is the living form in its entirety that should be taken as selfhood proper, with the brain as an especially feverish region.”
This view does not make the brain unimportant. It treats the brain as an especially active part of a larger living system, rather than equating the person with that organ. The distinction is about what counts as the self, not whether the brain has a major role in human thought.

A key distinction in Challenger’s argument is between basic bodily self-knowledge and reflective awareness of that knowledge. She argues that all organisms have at least a minimal form of bodily self-knowledge and therefore count as selves. Some organisms, she suggests, appear able to know that they know. Humans, as far as we can currently tell, can also discuss this knowledge with themselves.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
These are claims made by the excerpt, not a definitive scientific classification of which organisms are conscious. In particular, the idea of minimal selfhood should not be mistaken for proof that every organism has human-like experience or reflective thought.
What neuroscience contributes to the argument
The neuroscience examples in the essay complicate simple stories of human exceptionalism; they do not establish Challenger’s philosophical conclusion. The excerpt invokes comparative research to show that human brains are biologically distinctive without making them an unquestioned standard for judging every other form of life.

- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Brain scale: Challenger summarizes Suzana Herculano-Houzel’s 2009 study as finding that human brain size and total neuron count fit a primate-sized animal, describing the brain as a “linearly scaled-up primate brain.”
- Neural energy: The essay describes Mark Harnett’s 2021 cross-species work as finding fewer ion channels in human cortical neurons than expected for their size, with a possible energy-efficiency consequence. It also refers to earlier work from Harnett’s group on enhanced electrical compartmentalization in human dendrites, which might increase individual neurons’ computational power.
- Energy limits: The excerpt summarizes Peter Lennie’s earlier work as showing that cortical spikes are energetically costly and that this constrains how many neurons can be strongly active at once.
The excerpt supplies qualitative summaries, not numerical results or full study citations. These points therefore should not be read as a detailed account of the underlying papers or as proof that neuroscience has settled the nature of consciousness.
Why she resists a human-centered definition of intelligence
Challenger argues that human cognitive abilities and social collaboration do not justify using the human brain as the sole baseline for deciding what counts as intelligence or consciousness. Her starting point is the living organism, not a hierarchy that treats other forms of life as meaningful only to the extent that they resemble human minds.

The essay also considers claims about free will and brain causation. It quotes neuroscientist Sam Harris asking: “How can we be ‘free’ as conscious agents if everything that we consciously intend is caused by events in our brain that we do not intend and of which we are entirely unaware?” Challenger’s response is to question the leap from the brain’s role in mental processes to the claim that a person is only a brain. A causal contribution, in her view, does not settle the question of identity.

The excerpt is best understood as a case for embodied selfhood, not a demonstration that the mind-body problem has been resolved. It asks readers to distinguish the brain’s importance from the stronger claim that the brain alone is the self. Its account also leaves open difficult questions about how to identify consciousness in other organisms and how bodily self-knowledge relates to subjective experience.
