The most useful spray for boxelder bugs is an exterior product whose current label names both boxelder bugs and the surface you plan to treat. Even then, it is only a supplement for substantial or recurring outdoor clusters. Seal entry points before fall, and remove bugs that get indoors with a vacuum or broom rather than spraying inside.
Why boxelder bugs gather around homes
In fall, boxelder bugs congregate on buildings as they seek sheltered places to overwinter. They can get inside through small openings, so blocking access is the main preventive step. Spraying does not replace repairs to screens, gaps, or other entry points.
Start with exclusion before fall
Repair window, door, roof, and vent screens. Add suitable door sweeps or weatherstripping, and seal cracks around windows, doors, siding, utility lines, and foundations.
Recommended Free Tools
Keep openings that serve ventilation or drainage clear. In particular, do not seal weep holes or block vents that need to function. Cornell IPM discusses both exclusion and the need to preserve these openings in its boxelder bug guidance.

When an exterior spray may help
If large numbers repeatedly gather outside, a labeled exterior insecticide treatment may provide additional, limited relief. University of Minnesota Extension says late summer and early fall, when bugs first cluster on buildings, are the best time to spray; Penn State Extension also describes fall treatment before congregation. This is a seasonal supplement, not a lasting barrier: sunlight can break down insecticides, and new bugs may arrive.
Before buying or applying a product, check its current label. It must list boxelder bugs and authorize use on the specific exterior site or surface you intend to treat. Follow all label directions. A product described simply as “bug spray” is not necessarily appropriate for this pest or location. The University of Minnesota Extension and University of Missouri Extension both emphasize checking directions or the label.

Guidance differs in emphasis: Minnesota and Penn State describe situations where exterior treatments may help, while UC IPM and Cornell IPM caution that sprays are generally not recommended or effective as a primary management method. Taken together, that supports a restrained approach: prioritize exclusion, and consider a label-compliant perimeter treatment only for substantial outdoor clustering or recurring problems. Penn State’s page was revised in December 2011, so rely on the current product label—not an older active-ingredient list—for product choice.
How to remove boxelder bugs indoors
Vacuum, sweep, or hand-collect bugs that make it inside. Empty the vacuum promptly, and avoid crushing bugs on curtains, walls, or other surfaces that may stain. Minnesota Extension recommends vacuuming or using a broom and dustpan for indoor bugs.

Indoor sprays and treatment of cracks or wall voids are not a dependable fix: more bugs may continue to emerge from hidden spaces. Focus on physical removal indoors and seal the routes they use to get in. The National Pesticide Information Center also advises physical removal and following pesticide labels.
Other options for outdoor clusters
A hose or direct-contact soapy-water approach may help with visible clusters, but it should not be treated as a persistent barrier. Do not assume a homemade mixture is safe for every surface or plant; use care and avoid applying it where it could cause damage.

Choosing the right response
- Bugs gathering outside in fall: Repair access points first. If clusters are substantial or recurring, consider only an exterior product labeled for boxelder bugs and the intended surface.
- A few bugs inside: Vacuum or sweep them up and dispose of them promptly.
- Repeated indoor appearances: Look for gaps, damaged screens, or other entry routes rather than spraying indoor cracks.
- Large, persistent outdoor aggregations: If sealing is difficult, a licensed pest control operator may be able to assess the exterior problem.
