If your impact driver handles screws well but you keep reaching for a different tool, the right upgrade depends on what you need to do: choose a higher-spec impact driver for more screw-driving performance, an impact wrench for nuts and bolts, or a hammer drill/driver when drilling—especially in masonry—is the missing capability.
These tools are not interchangeable just because they all use impact or rotation. Match the tool to the job first, then check the exact Ryobi model, battery platform, and local specifications. Ryobi models and bundles vary by market.
Which tool should you buy instead of an impact driver?

When is a better impact driver the right upgrade?
If you mainly drive screws and fasteners and the current tool is short on performance, stay with the impact-driver category. Ryobi’s Middle East/Europe HP impact-driver page lists up to 300 Nm maximum torque and 4,000 impacts per minute for its featured HP option. A more powerful driver is not automatically the best answer if the real problem is drilling or loosening wheel nuts. First identify the task that your current driver cannot do well; then look at the appropriate category and its control features, accessories, and battery compatibility.
When should you choose an impact wrench?
Choose an impact wrench for nuts and bolts, including automotive fasteners such as wheel nuts, rather than as a general-purpose replacement for a driver. An impact driver typically uses a ¼-inch internal hex collet for bits; an impact wrench uses a square-drive anvil for sockets. Ryobi’s Australian support article describes the driver as a tool for quickly driving screws and fasteners, and the wrench as heavier but delivering significantly more torque. More torque is useful when the task calls for it, but it can also make a wrench the wrong choice for ordinary screws. Ryobi warns that using an impact wrench on standard screws can snap or strip them, damage the workpiece, and create a safety hazard. Use the right socket for the selected wrench and fastener, and choose impact-rated sockets rather than assuming a standard socket is suitable.

For scale, Ryobi’s Australian support article gives a broad category range of 300 Nm to 2,000 Nm for impact-wrench breakaway torque; that is not a specification for any one model. Separately, a 2021 Ryobi EMEA press release lists up to 700 Nm fastening torque and 900 Nm breakaway torque for a particular ONE+ HP impact-wrench model. Those model-specific numbers are manufacturer claims, not independent measurements. They should not be treated as directly comparable to the impact-driver figures above. When is a hammer drill/driver the better purchase?
If what you need is a tool that drills as well as drives, look at a drill/driver rather than another impact tool. A hammer drill/driver has a chuck for drill bits; its hammer action helps with masonry drilling. An impact driver’s rotational impact action is intended to help drive fasteners, not replace a hammer drill’s masonry function.
Ryobi’s US listing for the 18V ONE+ HP Brushless Hammer Drill and Impact Driver 2-Tool Kit is one regional example of a kit that combines drilling and fastening tools. It is a US product listing, not evidence that the same bundle or model number is available everywhere. What to check before spending more
- Task: Decide whether the unmet need is screw-driving, nuts and bolts, or drilling.
- Interface: Confirm the accessory connection: ¼-inch hex bit collet, square-drive anvil and socket, or drill chuck.
- Control: Check which impact modes or drill clutch settings are available for the work you do. Do not assume a higher torque figure provides better control.
- Battery platform: Verify that the tool uses batteries you already own, if that matters to your purchase.
- Local model details: Ryobi product numbers, specifications, availability, and kit contents vary between regions. Confirm the exact local SKU and included accessories.
