Botan combines photo-based plant identification with advertised care guidance, disease diagnosis, and plant collections. Its developer claims 98% first-attempt accuracy, but that figure has not been independently verified for Botan. The app requires an internet connection for analysis, and its privacy policy says identification photos may be processed by third-party AI services and used in specified ways. Check the subscription offer and privacy details shown in your own App Store before signing up or uploading photos.
What Botan does
Botan App Limited LLC’s iPhone app lets you take or upload a photo and receive a suggested identification. The US App Store listing describes identification for plants, flowers, mushrooms, and trees, alongside plant information, disease diagnosis and treatment advice, collections, and articles. Botan’s product page also advertises toxicity checks, garden customization, reminders, and environment tips such as pot diameter and soil pH. The company says its database covers more than 30,000 species; that is the publisher’s stated figure, not an independently audited count. Botan’s product page and its US App Store listing describe the advertised features.

According to Botan’s FAQ, identified plants can be added to a collection, renamed or removed, and assigned notifications. These tools can help organize plants and care notes, but they do not turn an app-generated identification or recommendation into professional diagnosis.
How accurate is Botan?
Botan advertises “98%” first-attempt identification accuracy in its FAQ. This is the developer’s claim. The available description does not provide a Botan-specific study, sample, or testing protocol that would let readers independently assess the percentage.

Independent context should not be mistaken for a Botan test. In “Plant identification apps – five years on,” published in BSBI News 159 in Spring 2025, Hamlyn Jones reports that some evaluated apps exceeded 80% species-level accuracy on the largely common European species studied; Flora Incognita reached 97% on one dataset retested with original images. Those results apply to the named apps and study conditions, not Botan. Jones also notes that a 95% result still means one incorrect identification in twenty and that photo quality matters.
Take a useful identification photo
For any photo-identification app, capture the features that distinguish the plant: a clear view of leaves and their arrangement, flowers or fruit when present, and the plant’s overall form. Avoid relying on a blurry, distant, or heavily shadowed image. A suggested match is a starting point; compare it with other reliable references, especially if the plant is unfamiliar or the identification could affect a decision.

Can you rely on Botan for toxicity or edibility?
No. Botan’s own privacy policy says: “We do not guarantee that AI Features will be 100% accurate. Plant identification results are provided as examples and suggestions only. You should not rely solely on the App’s AI-generated results for medical, safety, or critical decisions regarding plants (particularly regarding toxicity, edibility, or allergenic properties). Always verify results with additional sources or professional advice.” Read the Botan privacy policy for the full qualification.

What does Botan cost?
The US App Store listing is marked free with in-app purchases. When checked, it showed examples including a $14.99 monthly subscription and a $59.99 one-year subscription, alongside other purchase entries. These are US storefront examples, not guaranteed offers for every user; prices and available plans can vary by country, exchange rate, payment method, and time.
Before starting a trial or subscription, review the exact offer in the App Store purchase screen, including its duration, renewal date, and renewal price. Botan’s terms state that subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled through the applicable store process. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. The US listing includes mixed individual reviews about trial expectations and cancellation; those reports are not proof of a general billing problem.

What happens to photos you upload?
Botan’s privacy policy says photos submitted for identification are processed through Plant.ID, Pl@ntNet, and GPT models from OpenAI. It also says photos may be used to improve or train identification models, analyze plant patterns, and appear as examples on Botan’s public website. Botan says identifying information—including faces, people, and EXIF geolocation metadata—is removed before training or public display, and describes a right to object to future training and public display. Consult the current privacy policy and contact Botan if you want to understand or exercise that right.

Does Botan work offline, and which iPhones support it?
Botan’s FAQ says a stable internet connection is needed for identification, analysis, recommendations, and other functions. If a connection drops after you open the app, taking a photo may remain possible, but analysis waits until service returns. The US App Store listing states that iPhone requires iOS 16.0 or later; requirements and availability may differ by storefront or change over time.
How to assess Botan for your needs
Consider these points before choosing Botan or another plant-identification app:
Quick Recap
- Features: Check whether you need only identification or also want care guidance, disease and treatment suggestions, toxicity information, or collection and reminder tools.
- Accuracy evidence: Distinguish a publisher’s percentage from independent tests, and check whether any independent results cover the plants and region you care about. The BSBI review provides context on certain other apps, not a comparative Botan result.
- Photo and data practices: Read the privacy policy and store label to see which services process photos, what uses the publisher describes, and what information may be collected.
- Subscription terms: Confirm the offer, any trial duration, renewal date, price, and cancellation route in your own storefront.
- Practical fit: Account for Botan’s connection requirement and decide whether its collection, garden, and reminder features are useful to you.
