There is no single brand-wide winner. Buy a compact model such as the Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) or JBL Flip 7 when easy carrying is the priority. Move up to the Bose SoundLink Plus or Max, or JBL Xtreme 4, when you need a larger speaker, longer claimed playtime, phone charging, or a group-listening setup. Compare the exact model and generation: water resistance, battery figures, weight, and pairing features vary substantially within both ranges.

Start with the use case, not the logo

Bose and JBL sell portable speakers in several size classes. A pocketable speaker for a kitchen, desk, or day trip is solving a different problem from a heavier unit intended to fill a gathering. Treating “Bose SoundLink” or “JBL” as one product produces misleading conclusions about loudness, battery life, and durability.

  • For the easiest carry: compare Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) with JBL Flip 7.
  • For a larger room or outdoor group: compare Bose SoundLink Plus or Max with JBL Xtreme 4.
  • For emergency phone power: focus on Bose SoundLink Max and JBL Xtreme 4, the models in this comparison with phone-charging capability.
  • For multi-speaker expansion: Bose supports a current-family pairing system, while applicable JBL models use Auracast. These are separate ecosystems; a Bose speaker does not pair directly with a JBL speaker as a stereo pair.

This is a feature-based buying guide, not a sound-quality ranking. The available manufacturer material does not include a controlled listening test, durability test, failure-rate study, or independent battery comparison.

What is in each company’s current range?

Bose SoundLink family

In its June 12, 2025 announcement, Bose described four current SoundLink models: Micro (2nd Gen), Flex (2nd Gen), Plus, and Max. Bose says any two current-family models can be paired for amplified audio. Its Stereo Mode requires two matching models; Party Mode synchronizes audio across compatible speakers. The Bose app handles control, customization, and software updates. The announcement listed U.S. launch prices of $129 for Micro (2nd Gen) and $269 for SoundLink Plus. Those are launch prices from 2025, not guaranteed current retail prices.

Bose’s promotional description calls SoundLink Plus “incredible audio for any gathering where music can improve the moment and set the mood.” That is Bose marketing language, not an independent measurement of sound quality.

JBL portable Bluetooth range

JBL’s comparison page spans the compact GO4 and CLIP5, GRIP, Flip 7, Charge 6, Xtreme 4, and Boombox 4. The catalog is live and can change, so verify that the model and generation you are considering are still sold in your region. JBL advertises Auracast connections on applicable models rather than presenting it as a universal feature of every speaker in the range.

Portability: the weight difference is a buying decision

Weight is more useful than a vague “portable” label. JBL lists the Flip 7 at 1.82 pounds, while the Xtreme 4 is 4.63 pounds. Bose lists the SoundLink Max at 4.9 pounds. The larger models are still movable, but they are no longer equally convenient for a commute, bicycle trip, or one-handed carry.

Model Published weight Practical implication
JBL Flip 7 1.82 lb Lightest of the specifically documented models here; suited to frequent carrying.
JBL Xtreme 4 4.63 lb A substantial speaker for room or group use rather than minimal luggage.
Bose SoundLink Max 4.9 lb Comparable to Xtreme 4 in carry burden; choose for its feature set, not for “ultra-light” portability.

No comparable weight figure is established here for the Flex (2nd Gen) or SoundLink Plus, so do not infer their carry weight from the Max or from another generation. Before buying, check the exact product page for the region and generation you will receive.

Model Rating What the comparison establishes
Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) IP67 Its stated enclosure rating is IP67.
Bose SoundLink Max IP67 Its stated enclosure rating is IP67.
JBL Flip 7 IP68 Its stated enclosure rating is IP68.
JBL Xtreme 4 IP67 Its stated enclosure rating is IP67.

An IP code describes the protection level tested for that model; it is not permission to treat every speaker in a lineup identically. Confirm the manufacturer’s care instructions, especially after exposure to salt water, sand, or repeated submersion.

Battery claims need their conditions attached

Battery-hour figures are not a standardized head-to-head score. Volume, music content, temperature, charging another device, and the test method all change runtime. Even on one product page, a headline mode can differ from the detailed specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Model Published playtime claim Important condition or wording
Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) Up to 12 hours Bose describes this as playback at moderate volume.
Bose SoundLink Max Up to 20 hours Bose’s stated test uses 65% volume; its guide says up to 3 hours at maximum volume. The test conditions include Bluetooth A2DP, room temperature, default EQ, and no external-device charging.
JBL Flip 7 14 hours maximum in detailed specifications; up to 16 hours with Playtime Boost in headline copy These are different figures from the same product presentation. Treat Playtime Boost as a mode, not as the ordinary specification.
JBL Xtreme 4 24 hours maximum, plus up to 6 additional hours with Playtime Boost The additional figure is tied to Playtime Boost rather than ordinary maximum playtime.

The sensible comparison is conditional: Flex 2nd Gen and Flip 7 are in the smaller class, while Max and Xtreme 4 target longer sessions and larger gatherings. Do not claim that one brand “lasts longer” without matching volume, content, temperature, and charging conditions.

Sound and wattage: what the available evidence can—and cannot—say

Neither manufacturer’s published figures establish a universal sound-quality winner. Bose’s description of SoundLink Plus is promotional, and JBL’s own comparison guidance warns against using wattage as a loudness shortcut: “Always be careful comparing wattage of speakers. For example, a speaker of 100W will not be twice as loud compared to a 50W speaker!” JBL says more complex indicators matter.

That warning matters when comparing a small Flex or Flip with a Max or Xtreme 4. A larger enclosure and different driver design may suit a room or party better, but the available material does not provide a controlled frequency-response, maximum-SPL, or blind listening comparison. If tonal preference is your deciding factor, listen to the exact models with familiar tracks and at realistic volume before committing.

Phone charging and other practical features

Bose SoundLink Max

Bose lists the SoundLink Max as capable of charging a phone from the speaker. Remember that using the speaker as a power source consumes battery, so its headline playback figure does not describe a session in which it is also charging an external device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

JBL Xtreme 4

JBL also gives the Xtreme 4 phone-charging capability. Its rechargeable battery is replaceable, with the replacement sold separately. That can matter if you expect years of frequent use, but it adds a future purchase and does not make the speaker lighter today.

Smaller models

The documented comparison does not establish phone-charging support for the Flex (2nd Gen) or Flip 7. Choose those models for size and normal playback rather than assuming they can serve as a power bank.

Multi-speaker pairing: stay inside one ecosystem

Bose pairing

Bose says two current SoundLink family models can pair for amplified audio. Stereo Mode requires matching models, so a Flex and a Max should not be presented as a left/right stereo pair. Party Mode is intended for synchronized playback. Setup and customization run through the Bose app, which also provides updates.

JBL Auracast

JBL identifies Auracast connections on relevant speakers in its comparison range. Because the feature is model-dependent, check the exact product specification before buying multiple units. Auracast availability does not mean every older JBL speaker or every model in the catalog can join the same group.

Cross-brand limitation

Bose and JBL pairing systems are not interchangeable. Buying one speaker from each brand does not create a supported stereo or party pair. If expansion is part of your plan, select the brand and compatible models first, then add matching speakers from that ecosystem.

Model-by-model buying advice

Choose Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) for a compact Bose setup

The Flex (2nd Gen) is the Bose option to consider when you want a smaller speaker and Bose’s current-family pairing and app features. Its published battery claim is up to 12 hours at moderate volume, and its enclosure is rated IP67. Confirm that the listing says “2nd Gen”: Bose’s first-generation Flex pages have different product information, and mixing generations can produce an incorrect specification comparison.

Pick it when the speaker will travel often, you value Bose’s app and pairing path, and 12-hour moderate-volume operation fits your routine. It is not the documented choice here for phone charging or the longest claimed runtime.

Choose JBL Flip 7 for a light, highly protected portable

At 1.82 pounds, the Flip 7 is the lightest model in this comparison with a published weight. JBL lists an IP68 rating. Its page presents 14 hours maximum in detailed specifications and up to 16 hours with Playtime Boost in headline copy; keep those figures separate when planning a trip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Flip 7 fits commuters, small rooms, and day trips where low carry burden matters more than phone charging or the output potential of a larger cabinet. Verify which playback mode is being advertised when comparing prices or battery claims.

Choose Bose SoundLink Plus when you want a larger current Bose model

Bose introduced SoundLink Plus at a U.S. launch price of $269 in June 2025. That is a historical launch price, not a promise of today’s street price. The announcement positions it for gatherings, but the available material does not provide a directly comparable weight, IP rating, or battery figure in this comparison. Check the current regional specification page for those details before purchase.

Choose Bose SoundLink Max for phone charging and Bose’s longest documented endurance

The Max weighs 4.9 pounds, carries an IP67 rating, and can charge a phone. Bose says up to 20 hours at 65% volume under its stated test conditions, while its guide says up to 3 hours at maximum volume. That wide spread illustrates why a single battery number can mislead. The Max is appropriate when you accept a heavier carry and want a larger Bose speaker with documented power-bank utility.

Choose JBL Xtreme 4 for long claimed runtime and a replaceable battery

The Xtreme 4 weighs 4.63 pounds and is rated IP67. JBL lists 24 hours maximum playtime and up to six additional hours with Playtime Boost. It can charge a phone, and its rechargeable battery can be replaced separately. Those features make it a strong candidate for long sessions and group use, provided its 4.63-pound carry burden is acceptable.

A practical decision process

  1. Set the carry limit. If roughly two pounds is your ceiling, the documented Flip 7 weight points toward the compact class. If a 4.6-to-4.9-pound speaker is acceptable, consider Xtreme 4 or SoundLink Max.
  2. Define the environment. For a bag, desk, or small room, start with Flex 2nd Gen or Flip 7. For gatherings, evaluate Plus, Max, or Xtreme 4.
  3. Choose the durability target. Compare the exact IP rating instead of assuming brand-wide protection. Flex 2nd Gen and Max are IP67; Flip 7 is IP68; Xtreme 4 is IP67.
  4. Translate battery claims into your use. Decide whether moderate-volume or maximum-volume operation is realistic, and whether Playtime Boost is acceptable. Do not compare 20 hours at 65% volume directly with an unconditional headline number.
  5. Check utility features. If phone charging or a replaceable battery matters, the documented choices are SoundLink Max and Xtreme 4.
  6. Plan expansion. For Bose, matching models are required for Stereo Mode. For JBL, verify Auracast compatibility on every model you intend to group. Do not mix brands for a supported pair.
  7. Verify the transaction. Confirm the generation, regional price, stock, warranty, and included accessories at checkout. Launch prices and catalog listings can change.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing brands instead of models: a Flip 7 and a SoundLink Max differ more by size and purpose than their logos suggest.
  • Using wattage as a loudness score: JBL explicitly cautions that doubling watts does not double perceived loudness.
  • Combining generations: first-generation SoundLink Flex information should not be substituted for Flex (2nd Gen) specifications.
  • Treating “up to” as guaranteed runtime: volume, temperature, content, charging, and special modes alter battery life.
  • Assuming every model shares an IP rating: protection is stated per product.
  • Expecting Bose and JBL to form one stereo system: their pairing ecosystems are separate.
  • Using launch prices as current prices: Bose’s $129 Micro (2nd Gen) and $269 SoundLink Plus figures were U.S. launch prices announced in 2025.

Bottom line by buyer type

If your priority is… Start with… Why
Lowest documented carry weight JBL Flip 7 JBL lists it at 1.82 lb.
Compact Bose option Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) Up to 12 hours at moderate volume, IP67, and Bose current-family pairing.
Phone charging in a larger Bose speaker Bose SoundLink Max Phone charging, IP67, 4.9 lb, and up to 20 hours at Bose’s stated 65% test volume.
Long claimed runtime plus replaceable battery JBL Xtreme 4 24 hours maximum, up to six additional Playtime Boost hours, phone charging, and a separately replaceable battery.
A larger Bose model introduced in 2025 Bose SoundLink Plus Designed for gatherings; verify current regional specifications and price before buying.

The right purchase is therefore conditional: choose Flex 2nd Gen or Flip 7 for easier carrying, and choose SoundLink Plus, SoundLink Max, or Xtreme 4 when size, endurance, charging utility, or group playback is more important. Compare the exact current listing rather than relying on a Bose-versus-JBL generalization.
