There is no single remote that works with every Bose Solo system. First identify the exact model printed on your speaker or shown on its Bose support page, then follow the instructions for that system and remote. The original Solo TV Sound System remote handles power, volume and mute; universal remotes can add control of a TV or other devices when programmed with the correct codes.

Identify your Solo system before using or buying a remote

“Bose Solo” covers multiple products and generations, so the name alone is not enough to establish remote compatibility. Bose lists a remote with battery for the Solo TV Speaker, Solo 10 and CineMate 10; a separate eight-button remote for the Solo 10 II and Solo Club; and another accessory for the TV Speaker / Solo Soundbar Series 2. Check Bose’s Solo TV Speaker product support page and remote-accessory catalog against the exact model on your system before ordering. Those listings do not establish compatibility with every regional variant or third-party listing.

If you cannot inspect the system, check its label, receipt or product support page. Do not rely on a remote’s appearance or on the word “Solo” in a seller’s listing; confirm that the listing names your exact model.

Use the original Solo TV Sound System remote

For the original Solo TV Sound System, point the remote at the front of the speaker. Its basic controls are power, volume up, volume down and mute. Bose describes this compact remote as operating the system directly. The Solo TV Sound System owner guide also says an optional Bose universal remote can operate the system and be programmed for a TV and connected components.

Program a Solo universal remote for a TV or source device

The Solo TV Sound System universal remote guide describes control of up to five audio/video devices, such as a TV, DVD or Blu-ray player, cable or satellite box, and VCR. Use the instructions for the physical remote in hand; the following sequence is for this Solo universal remote, not automatically for Solo 15, Solo 5 or later TV Speaker remotes.

  1. Find the device code for the manufacturer in the remote’s Universal Remote Device Codes book.
  2. Hold Setup until all five source buttons light.
  3. Press the source button for the device, such as TV. Only that source button should remain lit.
  4. Enter the code using the number keypad. Two blinks followed by the source button turning off indicate a successful entry. Three rapid flashes of all five source buttons mean the code is invalid.
  5. Point the remote at the device and test its power button. If it does not respond, repeat the sequence with another code listed for that device.

For another device, select its corresponding source button and use its code. For a combination device, the guide recommends checking combination-device listings first; you may program the code under both relevant source buttons for convenience. See Bose’s Solo universal remote guide for the matching device-code instructions.

Solo 15 remotes use a different procedure

The Solo 15 guide covers a distinct universal remote with six source buttons. Its process begins by holding the relevant source button until all six buttons glow, then entering a four-digit code and testing basic functions; if the device does not respond, the guide describes using a code scanner. Do not combine those steps with the five-button remote procedure. Consult the Solo 15 guide for its exact programming and scanning instructions.

Fix a remote that is intermittent or does not control the system

Bose’s troubleshooting page applies to the Solo TV Speaker sold from 2012–2015. Work through these checks before deciding the remote needs replacement:

  1. Remove any remaining plastic wrapper from the remote; it can reduce range.
  2. Move the system away from excessive direct light, which may interfere with its infrared receiver, and make sure nothing blocks the sensor at the front.
  3. Try fresh batteries. Bose recommends alkaline rather than rechargeable batteries for this remote because rechargeable batteries might provide lower voltage.
  4. Operate the remote within 20 feet, the range stated by Bose Support for this model. This is a model-specific support specification, not an independent measurement.
  5. Notice whether only some buttons fail or none work. Partial operation can point to a different problem from a completely inactive remote.
  6. If appropriate for the product, reset the system and follow the product-specific steps in Bose’s support guidance.
  7. Check for infrared output by viewing the remote’s top edge through a digital camera while pressing a button. Some phone cameras have IR filters; try the front and rear camera or another camera before concluding that no signal is being sent.

If the remote emits infrared but the system still does not respond, verify the system model and use the matching remote guide. Bose cautions that remotes for other products may provide different or no functionality. For the Solo 15 Series II universal remote, Bose documents a remote reset using code 981; it erases the remote’s programming. Use that reset only for that specific remote and follow its product guide. More checks appear on Bose’s remote troubleshooting page.

Model-specific replacement

A replacement that explicitly names your system is the clearest option. Bose lists a remote with battery for the Solo TV Speaker, Solo 10 and CineMate 10, and a different eight-button remote for the Solo 10 II and Solo Club. The TV Speaker / Solo Soundbar Series 2 remote is also listed separately. Check Bose’s product listing and accessory catalog for your model, and verify compatibility in any seller listing before buying.

Universal remote

A universal remote may be a better fit if you also want to operate a TV or source devices. Check that its device-code instructions cover your equipment and that the setup procedure matches the exact remote. The older Solo universal remote guide documents up to five sources; the Solo 15 remote has a separate six-source layout and setup method.

Set-top-box remote

If you have the original Solo TV Sound System, its owner guide says a set-top-box remote can be programmed for basic power and volume using the Bose device code specified in that remote’s own instructions. Codes and programming support vary, and this does not promise control of every Solo function or every Bose Solo model.
