Neither the current Bose QuietComfort Earbuds nor Sony WF-1000XM5 can be called the proven noise-cancellation winner based on manufacturer specifications alone. Bose lists a slightly longer maximum listening time per charge, while Sony publishes a broader codec list that includes LDAC and LC3. Both offer multipoint and IPX4-class splash protection. Your best choice depends on fit, device compatibility and which features matter most—not an established head-to-head ANC result.
Which earbuds are being compared?
This comparison is between Bose’s current QuietComfort Earbuds generation, announced in September 2024, and Sony’s WF-1000XM5 true wireless earbuds. It does not cover the earlier Bose QuietComfort Earbuds generation from 2020 or Sony WH-1000XM5 over-ear headphones. Bose identifies the current earbuds as QCEARB24; Sony’s WF-1000XM5 support page identifies its earbud model.
How do their published specifications compare?
| Feature | Bose QuietComfort Earbuds | Sony WF-1000XM5 |
|---|---|---|
| Noise control | Adjustable noise cancellation, with Quiet, Aware and Off modes listed by Bose. | Sony describes a dual-processor, multi-microphone noise-canceling system. |
| Earbud battery life | Up to 8.5 hours per charge, according to Bose. | Up to 8 hours with noise canceling on, or up to 12 hours with it off, according to Sony. |
| Battery with case | Bose’s user guide says up to 2.5 additional charges and up to 30 hours total under its stated test conditions. Its product page instead displays up to 31.5 hours. | Up to 24 hours total with noise canceling on, according to Sony’s product page. |
| Water protection | IPX4; Bose describes the earbuds as water- and sweat-resistant. | IPX4 equivalent; Sony describes splash protection. |
| Device switching | Bluetooth multipoint. | Multipoint connection. |
| Published audio formats | The Bose product page reviewed does not provide an equivalent full codec list. | SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3. |
| Fit components | Three eartip sizes and three stability-band sizes, for nine combinations. | Noise-isolation tips are included; Sony’s specifications list the included tips. |
| Charging | Wireless charging case. | USB charging and wireless charging with the case. |
These are manufacturer specifications, not results from a controlled comparison. For Bose battery details, its user guide states test conditions of playback at 75 dB SPL, EQ at zero and Quiet Mode. The guide’s up-to-30-hour total differs from the product page’s up-to-31.5-hour figure. Sony lists its battery and other technical details on its WF-1000XM5 specifications page.

The published descriptions do not establish a winner. Bose lists adjustable cancellation modes, and Sony describes the hardware behind its noise-canceling system, but neither description is a comparable measurement of how much outside sound each model reduces. Without a controlled independent head-to-head test, claims that one cancels noise better are not supported here.
#1 Best Overall
- WORLD-CLASS NOISE CANCELLATION: The best noise cancellation of any Bose wireless earbuds is now even better than before. ActiveSense technology smooths spikes in surrounding sound, so even in Aware Mode distractions won’t get in the way.
- CUSTOMTUNE TECHNOLOGY: CustomTune technology analyses your ears and adapts your in-ear headphones to their shape. The result? World-class noise cancellation and custom sound for bigger chills every time you press play.
- NOISE CONTROL: Quickly adjust the level of noise cancellation without using Modes, including turning it off completely to conserve battery.
- IMMERSIVE AUDIO: Bose Immersive Audio spatialises what you’re hearing by taking it out of your head and placing it beyond your Bluetooth earbuds. It’s like listening from the acoustic sweet spot, where songs sound like the artist intended.
- SECURE FIT AND STABILITY: Choose from nine combos of eartips and stability bands to find the snuggest fit for comfortable earbuds. The soft, umbrella-shaped tips seal the opening of your ear to reduce outside noises while stability bands hug them.
For a personal decision, consider the sounds you most want to reduce—such as steady transport noise or nearby voices—and try the earbuds in that setting if possible. The fit and seal you get can affect your experience, so a product description alone cannot predict your result.
Which lasts longer on a charge?
Bose’s advertised maximum is 8.5 hours per charge; Sony’s is up to 8 hours with noise canceling on. That gives Bose a half-hour paper advantage against Sony’s ANC-on figure, but it does not establish longer real-world listening time: manufacturer test conditions may differ, and Sony’s separate up-to-12-hour figure is for noise canceling off.
For total listening time with the case, Sony lists up to 24 hours with noise canceling on. Bose’s user guide gives up to 30 hours under its stated 75 dB SPL, zero-EQ, Quiet Mode test, while Bose’s product page displays up to 31.5 hours. Because Bose’s official materials report different totals, treat them as source-specific claims rather than a directly comparable battery test.

Which model suits your devices and fit preferences?
Choose based on codec compatibility
Sony explicitly lists SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3. The Bose product page reviewed does not publish an equivalent full codec list, so do not assume the models offer matching format support. Check that both your source device and earbuds support a codec before counting it as a benefit.
Choose based on comfort, not the size chart alone
Bose supplies three eartip sizes and three stability-band sizes. Sony includes noise-isolation tips. Those options describe what comes in the box, not which earbuds will feel better: ear shape and a secure seal vary from person to person. If you can, try different included sizes and check comfort as well as whether the earbuds stay in place.
Consider switching and charging habits
Both manufacturers list multipoint, which is useful if you want to connect to more than one device. The specifications do not establish which model switches more smoothly in everyday use. Both cases support wireless charging; Sony’s specifications also list USB charging.

Are they suitable for workouts or rain?
Both models carry IPX4-class protection in their manufacturers’ descriptions. That is splash protection, not waterproofing: it does not mean the earbuds can be immersed in water. Bose also describes its earbuds as sweat-resistant, but neither manufacturer’s listed rating should be read as protection for swimming or submersion.

Which should you buy?
- Consider Bose if its included tip and stability-band options suit your ears, or if its advertised 8.5-hour per-charge maximum is more appealing. That battery figure remains a manufacturer claim, not a guaranteed runtime.
- Consider Sony if its explicitly listed LDAC or LC3 support matches your playback setup, or if you value having a published ANC-off battery figure as well as its ANC-on figure.
- Do not decide on ANC superiority from product descriptions alone. The available manufacturer specifications do not provide a controlled head-to-head ranking.
