Both headphones are strong choices for reducing everyday noise. The available head-to-head evidence gives Bose an advantage in comfort, while neither model has an established, precise lead in noise cancellation. Sony offers longer rated battery life and, in the US price snapshots available on October 13, 2026, cost less. Bose’s second-generation QuietComfort adds newer connectivity and immersive-audio features, but its rated battery life is shorter. Choose Bose if long-wear comfort is your priority; choose Sony if battery endurance, touch controls and a lower current price matter more.

Which Bose QuietComfort model is being compared?

The name “Bose QuietComfort” covers more than one product. This comparison uses the Bose QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen), which Bose lists as having begun sales in August 2026, against the Sony WH-1000XM5. Bose also continues to list first-generation QuietComfort Headphones, sold since October 2023. Those are not interchangeable models, so check the generation on the product page or box before comparing specifications or prices.

Standard QuietComfort is also different from Bose QuietComfort Ultra. The Ultra line is not part of this comparison. Bose says its SC or Club version uses the same headphones as the standard model but replaces the hard case with a soft case; the case difference should not be mistaken for a different acoustic or wireless platform.

RTINGS’ direct comparison, updated July 2, 2026, labels the Bose product “QuietComfort Headphones Wireless.” Its public summary supports the comfort and isolation observations below, but it does not establish that the tested Bose unit was the August 2026 second-generation model. Treat those findings as useful evidence about the QuietComfort-versus-XM5 design family, not as a laboratory verdict specifically on every second-generation change.

Quick decision: which one should you buy?

If your priority is… Better starting point Why
Long listening sessions and low clamp pressure Bose QuietComfort (2nd Gen) RTINGS describes Bose as significantly more comfortable in its direct comparison. Individual fit still varies.
Maximum rated battery life Sony WH-1000XM5 Sony rates the XM5 for up to 30 hours, versus Bose’s up to 24 hours with Immersive Audio off.
Noise reduction on trains and in conversation-heavy spaces Either RTINGS describes both as excellent and effective against train engines and ambient conversation; its accessible summary does not publish a precise winner.
Immersive playback and newer wireless specification Bose QuietComfort (2nd Gen) It adds TrueSpatial immersive audio, Bluetooth 5.4, USB-C wired audio and ActiveSense in Aware Mode.
Touch controls and Sony’s microphone-processing system Sony WH-1000XM5 Sony specifies touch controls, two processors and eight microphones.
Lower price in the cited US snapshot Sony WH-1000XM5 Sony’s page displayed $299.99 against a $399.99 list price; Bose’s page displayed $359. Prices change.

Noise cancellation: what the evidence actually shows

Both are effective against common low-frequency noise

RTINGS’ comparison says both headphones mitigate background sound such as train engines and ambient conversation. That makes either model suitable for commuting, open-plan work and air travel when the goal is to reduce a broad mix of environmental noise.

The comparison summary available publicly does not provide an exact numeric ANC ranking for these two products. It therefore cannot support a claim that one is definitively quieter by a measured percentage or decibel figure. A small difference in a reviewer’s test would also not predict every listener’s result: seal quality, glasses, hair, ear shape and the position of a train or aircraft engine all affect perceived isolation.

Why your fit can change the result

Active noise cancellation works alongside the passive seal formed by the ear cushions. If a cushion gaps around glasses or if the headband shifts during a walk, outside sound can become more noticeable even while the electronics are functioning normally. Try both models with your usual glasses, hairstyle and travel hat, and test them while turning your head. A stable seal is more useful than a specification-sheet victory.

Choosing between ANC modes

Bose’s second-generation model adds ActiveSense in Aware Mode. Bose describes this as a way to moderate sudden loud sounds while retaining awareness of the surroundings. That is useful when you need to hear announcements or colleagues but do not want an unexpected clatter to pass through at full level. No equivalent new feature on the XM5 is established in the cited product information, so do not assume the two transparency modes behave identically.

Comfort and fit

Why Bose gets the comfort edge

In the direct RTINGS comparison, Bose is described as significantly more comfortable. That advantage is the clearest preference signal in the available evidence. For people who wear headphones for several hours, lower perceived pressure and a lighter-feeling fit can matter more than a small difference in app features.

Soundcore by Anker Q20i Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling Headphones, White | Over-Ear, Bluetooth, 40H ANC Playtime, Hi-Res Audio, Big Bass, Transparency Mode, Customize via App, Travel, Home, Office
  • Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
  • Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
  • 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
  • Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
  • Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.

“More comfortable” is not universal. Head width, ear size, glasses arms, hair, skin temperature and tolerance for heat all change the experience. Someone who prefers a firm seal may like the XM5’s fit, while another listener may find that same pressure tiring. The only reliable way to settle this part of the decision is to wear each model for at least 30 minutes, including with glasses if you use them.

Fit checks before keeping either model

  • The ear should sit inside the cushion without its top or bottom pressing against the driver housing.
  • The headband should rest securely without creating a concentrated pressure point on the crown.
  • Move your jaw, look down and turn your head; the seal should not break repeatedly.
  • Listen for your own footsteps and speech. Strong internal thumping can indicate a fit issue rather than an electronics problem.
  • Wear the headphones in the room where you expect to use them. Heat that feels acceptable for ten minutes may become distracting during a flight.

Battery life and charging

Model Manufacturer-rated playback Important test conditions or limitations
Bose QuietComfort (2nd Gen) Up to 24 hours; up to 18 hours with Immersive Audio enabled Bose says its battery test used ANC on and playback at 75 dBSPL. Actual life varies with settings and use.
Sony WH-1000XM5 Up to 30 hours Sony’s cited product specification is a manufacturer rating; no directly comparable independent test under the Bose conditions is published.

Sony has the longer published endurance figure by six hours when Bose Immersive Audio is off, and by 12 hours when it is on. These are not results from one standardized laboratory test, so they should be treated as directional specifications rather than a promise of identical real-world use. Volume, wireless codec behavior, call time, temperature, ANC mode and feature settings can all reduce runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bose’s 24-hour figure includes the qualification that its test used ANC and 75 dBSPL playback. Turning on TrueSpatial Immersive Audio lowers the rating to up to 18 hours. If you frequently forget to charge, Sony’s 30-hour claim gives you more margin between charging sessions. If you normally recharge every night, the difference may have little practical effect.

Fast charging and wired fallback

Sony’s official product information describes fast charging when an optional USB-PD-compatible adapter is used. The cited material does not specify a universal number of minutes or hours for that result, so do not treat “fast charging” as a fixed runtime promise.

Bose’s second-generation model adds USB-C wired audio. That gives you a direct connection option for devices, in-flight systems or situations where wireless use is undesirable. Confirm the cable and source behavior you need before travel; a USB-C audio connection is not automatically the same as charging while listening.

Features and controls

Bose QuietComfort (2nd Gen)

  • TrueSpatial immersive audio: Bose names this feature as a way to create an immersive sound presentation. It is a vendor feature, not an independent assessment of soundstage quality.
  • ActiveSense in Aware Mode: Helps manage sudden loud sounds while retaining environmental awareness, according to Bose.
  • Bluetooth 5.4: A newer Bluetooth version than the number cited for many older headphones, although Bluetooth version alone does not determine sound quality or connection stability in every device combination.
  • USB-C wired audio: Provides a wired listening path in addition to Bluetooth.
  • Removable cushions: Bose specifies removable ear cushions, which can make replacement easier when the original pads wear. Verify that any replacement is compatible with the second-generation model.

Sony WH-1000XM5

  • Two processors and eight microphones: Sony says these components control the headphone’s noise-management and voice-related systems.
  • Touch controls: Swipes and taps provide an alternative to physical buttons. Touch behavior can be convenient on a commute but may react differently when covered by hair, a hood or gloves.
  • Fast charging: Sony documents support when paired with an optional USB-PD-compatible adapter; the exact charging outcome depends on the adapter and use conditions.
  • Up to 30 hours of battery life: This is Sony’s rating, not a cross-brand independent measurement.

Neither list automatically makes one headset better. Bose’s additions matter most if you want immersive playback, USB-C audio or a replaceable-pad design. Sony’s hardware description matters most if you prefer touch interaction, longer rated endurance or its particular microphone-processing approach.

Sound, calls and immersive audio: what can and cannot be concluded

The available evidence does not provide a controlled frequency-response comparison, codec ranking or independent call-quality score for these exact products. It would be misleading to declare a universal “better sound” winner from the specifications alone.

Bose’s TrueSpatial mode is an optional presentation feature. Because it changes the listening experience and reduces the company’s battery rating to 18 hours, decide whether you enjoy a room-like effect before leaving it enabled all day. Sony’s two-processor, eight-microphone design indicates a substantial signal-processing system, but component counts do not by themselves prove clearer calls in every environment.

For calls, test the headphones with the meeting apps and phone you actually use. Speak from a quiet room and from a windy outdoor location, and ask the other person whether your voice remains intelligible. The product pages’ feature descriptions are not a substitute for that practical check.

Price and value in the United States

Model Displayed US price in the cited snapshot How to interpret it
Bose QuietComfort (2nd Gen) $359 Bose product-page price accessed October 13, 2026; time-sensitive and not a permanent MSRP statement.
Sony WH-1000XM5 $299.99; $399.99 list price shown Sony Electronics product-page snapshot accessed October 13, 2026; the lower figure may reflect a temporary sale.

On those US pages, Sony was displayed $59.01 below Bose’s displayed price. That difference is a snapshot, not a lasting value ranking. Promotions, color availability, regional taxes, retailer policies and the introduction of newer models can change the gap quickly. Compare current prices in your country and compare the same Bose generation; a discounted first-generation QuietComfort is not a like-for-like price comparison with the second generation.

Which one fits common use cases?

Daily commuting

Either model should handle the combination of engine rumble and nearby voices described in the RTINGS summary. Bose is the safer first try if your commute involves long wear and you are sensitive to clamp pressure. Sony is attractive if you want to stretch charging intervals across several workdays.

Long flights

Start with comfort and battery margin. Bose’s comfort advantage may become more valuable during a multi-hour flight, while Sony’s up-to-30-hour rating leaves more reserve for the outbound trip, airport time and return journey. Remember that Bose’s Immersive Audio setting reduces its rating to up to 18 hours.

Open-plan office or study

Both are described as effective against ambient conversation. Bose’s Aware Mode with ActiveSense can be useful when you need awareness without exposing yourself to every sudden noise. Sony’s touch controls may be preferable if you frequently pause or adjust playback without reaching for a phone.

Home listening and movies

Bose’s TrueSpatial mode is the differentiating feature to try. It may appeal if you want a more expansive presentation, but it costs battery life and is not a guaranteed improvement for every recording. If you prefer conventional stereo playback and longer endurance, Sony’s rating is the simpler choice.

Frequent wired use

Bose has an explicit USB-C wired-audio feature in its second-generation specification. Choose it when a USB-C connection is part of your routine, but verify compatibility with your laptop, phone, adapter and airplane entertainment system before buying. Sony’s cited information in this comparison does not establish the same USB-C audio feature.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Confirm the exact Bose model. Look for “QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen)” and do not substitute QuietComfort Ultra or first-generation QuietComfort when comparing prices.
  2. Check the return window. Comfort is highly individual, and a short indoor trial may not reveal heat or pressure problems.
  3. Test your normal accessories. Wear glasses, hats or hearing-related accessories that you use daily.
  4. Decide whether immersive audio is essential. On Bose, TrueSpatial changes the rated battery life from up to 24 hours to up to 18 hours.
  5. Compare local, current prices. The cited $359 Bose and $299.99 Sony figures were US page snapshots from October 13, 2026, not guaranteed prices elsewhere.
  6. Check your charging routine. Pick Sony if its longer rating reduces meaningful travel risk; pick Bose if nightly charging makes the difference unimportant.
  7. Inspect the case version. Bose’s SC or Club designation refers to the same headphones with a soft case instead of a hard case.
  8. Plan for pad wear. Bose specifies removable cushions; confirm replacement compatibility with the second-generation model before ordering.

Bottom line by priority

Buy the Bose QuietComfort (2nd Gen) when comfort, USB-C wired audio, TrueSpatial immersion, ActiveSense and removable cushions outweigh the shorter battery rating and higher cited US snapshot price. Buy the Sony WH-1000XM5 when up-to-30-hour rated endurance, touch controls, Sony’s two-processor/eight-microphone system or a lower current price matter more.

For noise cancellation alone, the evidence does not justify a definitive winner: RTINGS describes both as excellent against train engines and ambient conversation, without publishing an accessible exact ANC ranking in the comparison summary. Your final choice should therefore be driven by fit, battery habits, feature preferences and the current like-for-like price in your region.
