Choose the Bose SoundLink Flex Portable Speaker (2nd Gen) if you want the lighter, smaller speaker and a built-in microphone. Choose the Bose SoundLink Max if you can carry substantially more weight and want Bose’s stereo-configured model, longer rated battery life, a 3.5 mm input, and USB-C output for charging a phone.

The objective differences are clear: Bose lists the Flex 2nd Gen at 1.3 lb and the Max at 4.7 lb. The Flex is rated for up to 12 hours at moderate volume; the Max is rated for up to 20 hours at moderate volume, or up to three hours at maximum volume. Both carry an IP67 manufacturer rating. Bose labels the Flex mono and the Max stereo, but no independent controlled listening test was identified here, so the specifications alone do not prove that the Max sounds better for every listener.

SoundLink Flex vs. SoundLink Max: the key differences

These are both portable Bluetooth speakers, but they target different kinds of portability. The Flex 2nd Gen is an everyday carry speaker: it is compact, 1.3 lb, and includes a nylon utility loop. The Max is a larger, 4.7 lb speaker designed to deliver more capability from one enclosure, including a longer manufacturer-rated runtime, stereo configuration, wired input, and phone charging.

Which speaker should you buy?

Buy the SoundLink Flex 2nd Gen for everyday portability

The Flex is the practical choice when the speaker will regularly move between a kitchen, desk, balcony, campsite, or day bag. At 1.3 lb, it is less than one-third the Max’s listed weight. Its smaller 3.56 × 7.93 × 2.06-inch body also takes up less space, and the nylon utility loop gives you a simple way to attach or carry it.

Select the non-SE Flex 2nd Gen variant if hands-free calls matter. Bose lists a built-in microphone on those variants. The microphone is a meaningful functional difference, because the Max has no microphone. The Flex has no listed 3.5 mm input and is mono by Bose’s configuration label, so it is aimed at straightforward wireless playback rather than a wider set of connections.

Buy the SoundLink Max for battery reserve and connections

The Max makes more sense when the speaker will stay at a larger gathering spot, travel by car, or serve as a central speaker for long sessions. Bose rates it for up to 20 hours at moderate volume, compared with up to 12 hours for the Flex 2nd Gen. Bose also specifies up to three hours at maximum volume. Those figures are manufacturer estimates, not results from a common laboratory test.

Max adds a 3.5 mm input for a compatible wired source and a USB-C power output that can charge a phone. Phone charging reduces the energy available for audio, so treat that output as an emergency or convenience feature rather than as a replacement for a power bank. The Max’s removable rope handle is included. Bose has also described an optional shoulder strap and optional color handle accessories; the shoulder strap is sold separately.

Do not choose on the word “stereo” alone

Bose calls the Flex mono and the Max stereo. That tells you how each product is configured, but it does not establish a universal preference for one speaker’s sound. There is no independent controlled head-to-head measurement here for bass response, maximum loudness, outdoor audibility, or listening preference. Room placement, listening distance, content, and your own priorities can matter more than the configuration label.

How much bigger and heavier is the SoundLink Max?

On Bose’s published figures, the Flex 2nd Gen weighs 1.3 lb and measures 3.56 × 7.93 × 2.06 inches. The Max weighs 4.7 lb and measures 4.73 × 10.42 × 4.13 inches. That makes the Max 3.4 lb heavier, and its listed dimensions are larger in every direction.

The difference is noticeable in use. The Flex can be picked up with one hand and is easier to add to a day bag. The Max is still portable, but its weight and bulk make it more suitable for a planned carry, a car trip, or a fixed position with occasional relocation. Its removable rope handle helps, while an optional shoulder strap may make longer carries more comfortable. The strap is an accessory, not an included part of the standard Max package.

Battery life, charging, and phone power

Rated runtime is not a promise of identical real-world use

Bose rates the Flex 2nd Gen for up to 12 hours at moderate volume. Bose rates the Max for up to 20 hours at moderate volume and up to three hours at maximum volume. Loudness, the type of content, temperature, Bluetooth activity, battery condition, and charging another device all affect the result. “Up to” means your session may be shorter, especially at high volume or in demanding conditions.

The Max’s three-hour maximum-volume figure is particularly important if you expect party-level playback. Its 20-hour headline figure applies to moderate volume, not maximum output. The Flex’s 12-hour rating is also tied to moderate volume.

Charging the Max and using its output

The Max charges through USB-C. Bose support documentation gives an estimated five-hour charging time under its stated charging instructions. Use the supplied or otherwise suitable USB-C charging equipment and allow extra time if your charger, cable, temperature, or operating conditions differ from Bose’s assumptions.

The Max can send power from its USB-C output to a phone. Connect the phone with a suitable cable and expect the speaker’s remaining runtime to fall because it is supplying energy externally. If keeping music playing is the priority, charge the phone separately whenever possible.

Durability and outdoor use

Both models have an IP67 rating from Bose. That is the same manufacturer-rated ingress-protection headline for dust and water. It does not mean every type of immersion, spray, impact, saltwater exposure, or misuse is harmless. Keep ports and covers correctly closed, follow Bose’s care guidance, and do not treat the rating as a reason to leave either speaker underwater or exposed to damaging conditions.

IP67 also does not distinguish these speakers in a buying decision. The more useful question is whether you can carry the Max’s extra weight for the places where you plan to use it.

Bluetooth, microphone, and wired connections

Bluetooth versions and range

Bose lists Bluetooth 5.3 for the Flex 2nd Gen and Bluetooth 5.4 for the Max. Bose lists an operating range of approximately 30–33 feet. The newer version number on the Max should not be interpreted as a guaranteed longer range, louder playback, or better sound; obstacles, radio interference, phone compatibility, and placement still affect a connection.

Bose SoundLink Flex Bluetooth Speaker (2nd Gen) - Portable Outdoor Speaker with Hi-Fi Audio, Waterproof and Dustproof, USB-C, Up to 12 Hours Battery Life, Blue Dusk

Microphone support

The Flex 2nd Gen has a built-in microphone on non-SE variants. That supports speakerphone-style use when Bose’s compatibility and calling behavior apply. The Max has no microphone. If calls through the speaker are part of your routine, confirm the exact Flex variant rather than assuming every product name in a listing has the same hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3.5 mm input

Bose does not list a 3.5 mm input for the Flex 2nd Gen. The Max does include one. That makes the Max the more flexible choice for a compatible wired source, such as equipment that lacks Bluetooth or situations where you want to avoid wireless audio.

Can you pair a SoundLink Flex with a SoundLink Max?

Yes. Bose support lists the Flex 2nd Gen and Max as compatible for linking multiple speakers. The important limitation is the mode: Bose reserves Stereo Mode for two speakers of the same model. You can link a Flex and a Max in the supported party-style arrangement, but you should not promise left/right stereo from one of each.

What same-model Stereo Mode requires

  • Two SoundLink Flex Portable Speaker (2nd Gen) units for Flex Stereo Mode.
  • Two SoundLink Max units for Max Stereo Mode.
  • A Flex 2nd Gen plus a Max can be linked where Bose supports the combination, but not as a same-model Stereo Mode pair.

Before buying a second speaker for stereo playback, check the exact model name. A first-generation Flex is not the same product as the Flex 2nd Gen, and product-generation differences can affect app support and compatibility.

SoundLink Flex generations: avoid buying the wrong model

Bose sells documentation for an older SoundLink Flex Bluetooth Speaker introduced as a 2021 product and for the SoundLink Flex Portable Speaker (2nd Gen), identified as a 2024 model. The older first-generation page lists Bluetooth 4.2 and the Bose Connect app. The 2nd Gen page lists Bluetooth 5.3 and the Bose app.

When a listing, comparison, or accessory description uses only “SoundLink Flex,” pause and verify the generation. The 2nd Gen name is required for the newer Bluetooth, app, and specification claims in this comparison. Do not assume a discounted first-generation unit has the same software, connection behavior, microphone variant, or accessory compatibility.

Setup checklist for either speaker

  1. Confirm the model. For the smaller speaker, check that the product name says “SoundLink Flex Portable Speaker (2nd Gen)” if you want the newer specifications.
  2. Charge the speaker. Use USB-C charging equipment that meets Bose’s instructions. For the Max, Bose gives an estimated five-hour charging time.
  3. Install the applicable Bose app. The 2nd Gen Flex uses the Bose app; the legacy first-generation Flex documentation refers to Bose Connect.
  4. Enable Bluetooth on the phone or source. Keep the source within Bose’s listed approximately 30–33-foot range during initial pairing.
  5. Pair and test playback. Confirm audio, call behavior if you have a microphone-equipped Flex, and the desired volume before leaving the speaker unattended.
  6. For multiple speakers, verify the mode. Use Party Mode for the supported mixed-model arrangement. Use Stereo Mode only with two identical models.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming the Max is automatically better sounding

The Max is Bose’s stereo-configured option, but the available specifications do not provide a controlled sound-quality ranking. Buy it for the features and physical format you need, not for an unsupported promise of universally better bass, detail, or loudness.

Using the 20-hour figure at maximum volume

The 20-hour Max rating is for moderate volume. Bose separately lists up to three hours at maximum volume. Plan for shorter sessions when playing loudly, and remember that charging a phone further reduces available battery.

Expecting a microphone on the Max

The Max has no microphone. If speakerphone calls are important, select a non-SE Flex 2nd Gen variant and verify the listing’s specifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expecting mixed-model stereo

A Flex and Max can be linked where Bose supports the combination, but Bose limits Stereo Mode to same-model pairs. For left/right playback, buy two matching speakers.

Confusing IP67 with unlimited water protection

IP67 is a manufacturer rating, not insurance against every exposure or misuse. Protect the charging areas and follow care instructions after outdoor use.

Price and value context

On Bose’s US pages observed October 13, 2026, the Flex 2nd Gen displayed at $159 and the Max at $399. These are snapshots, not fixed prices; regional pricing, promotions, stock, colors, and marketplace listings can change. The price gap buys a larger enclosure, the Max’s stereo configuration, longer rated moderate-volume battery life, a 3.5 mm input, and phone-charging output. It does not buy a microphone, and it does not establish a measured sound-quality advantage.

For a portable speaker that will be carried frequently, the Flex’s lower price and 1.3-pound weight can be the more rational value. For a speaker that will spend long periods in one location and occasionally charge a phone, the Max’s additional hardware may justify its higher cost and 4.7-pound weight.

Bottom-line decision

  • Choose SoundLink Flex Portable Speaker (2nd Gen): You prioritize low weight, compact dimensions, a utility loop, a lower observed US price, and a microphone on non-SE variants.
  • Choose SoundLink Max: You prioritize up to 20 hours at moderate volume, Bose’s stereo configuration, a 3.5 mm input, USB-C phone charging, and the included removable rope handle, and you accept the 4.7-pound body.
  • Choose two matching units: You specifically want Bose Stereo Mode. A Flex and a Max can link in a supported party arrangement, but they are not a same-model stereo pair.
