For deeper, more forceful bass, the Bose Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar paired with the compatible Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer is the better choice. The standalone bar is the better fit when you want an easier, cleaner Atmos setup and do not need maximum low-frequency impact. If you also want sound coming from behind you, choose the complete Bose Home Theater Set—but understand that its reported surround improvement comes from both the subwoofer and two satellite speakers, not from the subwoofer alone.
“Sounds better” depends on the performance you value: bass extension, surround immersion, dialogue, latency, room practicality, compatibility, or total cost. The sections below separate those factors so you can choose the right configuration rather than assuming every upgrade improves every aspect of performance.
What you are comparing
Standalone Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar
The Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar is Bose’s all-in-one home-theater component. An independent Livingetc review describes it as a 5.0.2 configuration: five main channels, a subwoofer channel handled inside the bar, and two upward-firing height channels. It supports Dolby Atmos-style height presentation without requiring rear speakers or a separate bass enclosure.
That one-box design is the simplest way to build the system. You avoid finding a floor position for a subwoofer, running another power cable, and balancing additional wireless components. It also keeps the system visually restrained beneath the television.

Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar plus Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer
The compatible Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer is a separate low-frequency enclosure designed to take over the deepest bass. Bose says moving that work away from the bar extends low-frequency depth and output while leaving the soundbar more headroom for midrange and treble. The claim is Bose’s explanation of the design; it is not an independent measurement of dialogue improvement.
The subwoofer can connect wirelessly or by cable. Bose support documents one subwoofer connection for the soundbar, so this is a single-subwoofer expansion rather than a multi-subwoofer arrangement.
Bose Home Theater Set
The Home Theater Set combines the soundbar, a discrete subwoofer, and two satellite speakers. Bose says the Lifestyle Ultra platform can be expanded with the subwoofer and two additional speakers into a 7.1.4-channel system. That channel figure describes the fully expanded configuration; adding only the subwoofer does not create physical rear channels.
RTINGS’ comparison of the Bose Home Theater Set and the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar evaluates the complete package. It reports deeper low-bass extension and greater surround immersion for the set, while also finding slightly worse HDMI eARC latency. Because the set adds satellites as well as a subwoofer, those results cannot be used to isolate the subwoofer’s effect.
Quick comparison
| Configuration | Main advantage | Important limitation | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar alone | Simple Atmos presentation from one enclosure | Less low-bass output and no physical rear speakers | Listeners prioritizing simplicity, clean installation, and a compact room |
| Soundbar plus Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer | Deeper, stronger bass with the bar relieved of the deepest bass duties | Requires extra floor space, power, and setup | Film effects, electronic music, action games, and listeners who want more impact |
| Home Theater Set | Subwoofer bass plus physical rear-channel immersion | Higher system complexity and slightly worse HDMI eARC latency in RTINGS’ test | Viewers who want a wraparound theater presentation |
Bass: the clearest reason to add the subwoofer
If your definition of “better” is deeper bass and more physical impact, the system with a subwoofer has the stronger case. Bose designed the Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer to reproduce the lowest frequencies separately from the soundbar. In practical terms, that gives explosions, large percussion, organ notes, and bass-heavy music a dedicated enclosure instead of asking the bar to produce the entire range from its position below the television.
RTINGS reports lower bass extension for the Home Theater Set than for the standalone Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar. That is independent evidence that the expanded package reaches deeper, although the test compares the entire set rather than a bar with and without the subwoofer. Bose’s own explanation is that the subwoofer increases low-frequency depth and output and gives the soundbar more headroom for mids and highs.
“Deeper” and “louder” are not identical. A subwoofer can reproduce lower notes while also making bass effects feel more effortless at higher volume. Whether you prefer that presentation depends on your room, listening level, and taste. Some listeners want tight, restrained bass; others want the physical pressure that a dedicated enclosure can provide.

What the subwoofer changes in music
With acoustic or vocal recordings, the change may be less dramatic than with an action soundtrack. The main benefit is additional weight on kick drums, synthesizer lines, pipe-organ fundamentals, and other low-frequency material. If you mostly watch dialogue-driven programs at moderate volume, the standalone bar may already provide enough bass.
For dance, hip-hop, electronic, orchestral, and film music, the separate subwoofer is easier to justify. It is also the more appropriate choice if you regularly find compact soundbars sounding thin when you turn them up.
What the subwoofer cannot guarantee
A subwoofer does not automatically make every recording sound better. Poor placement can create boomy or uneven bass, and a neighbor-sensitive apartment may make the additional output impractical. The available evidence supports a likely increase in bass extension and impact, not a universal preference for the subwoofer configuration.
Surround and height immersion are separate from bass
The standalone bar can create an Atmos presentation using its upward-firing height drivers and front-facing speaker array. That can produce convincing height cues from one cabinet, provided the room and ceiling give those drivers a clear path.

Physical rear speakers solve a different problem. The two satellites in the Home Theater Set place surround information behind or beside the seating position instead of asking the front bar to simulate those channels. RTINGS reports greater surround immersion for the Home Theater Set, which is the expected advantage of adding those speakers.
Do not read the Home Theater Set’s surround result as proof that the subwoofer alone creates a larger soundstage. The comparison changes two variables at once: low-frequency hardware and rear-channel hardware. If your priority is a wraparound field of effects, the complete set is the relevant option. If your priority is only deeper bass, the Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer is the more targeted upgrade.
Ceiling, walls, and seating position
Upward-firing drivers require open space above the bar. The Livingetc review specifically notes that the height drivers should not be obstructed. A shelf directly above the bar, a low cabinet, or a television wall treatment can reduce the height effect even though the bar still plays Atmos content.

- IMMERSIVE DOLBY ATMOS AUDIO – Enjoy spacious cinematic sound with Dolby Atmos and Bose spatial audio technology for movies, gaming, sports, and music.
- POWERFUL WIRELESS SUBWOOFER – The Bose Ultra Subwoofer delivers deep, impactful bass that enhances every soundtrack, explosion, and musical performance.

- SMART STREAMING CONNECTIVITY – Stream wirelessly with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth plus support for Apple AirPlay, Spotify Connect, and Google Cast.
Rear-speaker performance also depends on placement. Satellites need suitable positions beside or behind the seating area and access to power. A room with an open rear wall may benefit more from the physical surrounds than a narrow room where the speakers must sit immediately beside the listener.
Dialogue and tonal balance
Bose says that assigning the deepest bass to the Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer leaves more headroom in the bar for midrange and high frequencies. Bose associates that extra headroom with clearer dialogue and a more open presentation. Treat this as the manufacturer’s design rationale rather than an independently measured dialogue score.
In a practical setup, dialogue clarity also depends on the recording mix, the television’s position, listening distance, and the room’s reflections. A subwoofer can make a system sound fuller, but it does not correct dialogue that is poorly mixed or masked by excessive overall volume. If speech intelligibility is your main concern, listen for vocal clarity at your normal viewing level rather than judging only by bass impact.
Latency: the expanded set is not an upgrade in every dimension
RTINGS reports slightly worse HDMI eARC latency for the Home Theater Set than for the standalone Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar. The difference is described as slight, but it matters to people who play games or watch content where lip-sync timing is noticeable.
The test result applies to the complete set, including the satellites and subwoofer. It should not be presented as a measurement of the Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer by itself. If gaming latency is more important to you than rear-channel immersion, compare the standalone bar and the full set using your own television, console, and HDMI settings before committing.

Where to put the subwoofer
Bose recommends placing the Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer on the floor near the same wall as the television and soundbar. Leave clearance around it rather than wedging it tightly into furniture. Moving it closer to a wall or corner increases bass, which can be useful in a large room but can also make the response less even.
- Place the enclosure on the floor near the television wall, with ventilation and clearance from furniture.
- Start away from the room’s most enclosed corner if you are concerned about boomy bass; corners increase output.
- Connect it wirelessly or by wire according to the current Bose compatibility instructions.
- Run Bose CustomTune after installation so the system can account for the room and its placement.
- Listen from the main seat at your normal volume before moving the subwoofer. If bass is heavy in one seat and weak in another, try a different position along the same wall.
The subwoofer also needs a nearby power outlet. That practical requirement can outweigh its sonic benefit in a room where cable routing is difficult or where strong bass would disturb adjacent rooms.

Where to put the soundbar
Keep the bar’s upward-firing drivers unobstructed. The bar should face the seating area, and the television or wall shelf should not block the path from the height drivers to the ceiling. A soundbar that is pushed into a tight recess may still produce sound, but its height presentation can be reduced.

Bass Module 700
Bose identifies the Bass Module 700 as a wired option for this soundbar. Do not assume it is a confirmed wireless match. If you already own one, check the current Bose support instructions for the exact cable and compatibility procedure before purchasing anything else.
Bose says the Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer uses the same acoustic package as the previous Bass Module 700, with updated radios and light retuning intended to create a clearer soundstage with the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar. Similar acoustic hardware does not mean identical connection support, so use the documented wired path for the Bass Module 700.
Surround speakers
Bose says the Lifestyle Ultra Speakers are compatible as surrounds. Earlier Bose Surround Speakers and Surround Speakers 700 are not compatible with this soundbar according to Bose’s product information. Existing owners should verify the model name before attempting to reuse older speakers.

Cost: use current prices, not launch figures
Bose announced the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar at a US suggested launch price of $1,099 and the Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer at $899. The announcement was dated May 5, 2026, with availability beginning May 15, 2026. Those are historical suggested prices, not verified October 2026 street prices or bundle prices.
At those launch figures, buying both components would total $1,998 before tax, shipping, discounts, or bundle adjustments. Use that sum only as launch context. Before buying, compare the current local price of the bar, the subwoofer, and the complete Home Theater Set. A discounted bundle can change the value calculation, while a full-price subwoofer may be difficult to justify if you rarely listen at high volume.
- Choose the bar alone when the one-box installation is worth more to you than maximum bass.
- Choose the bar plus subwoofer when low-frequency depth is the specific weakness you want to address.
- Choose the Home Theater Set when you are willing to pay for both deeper bass and physical rear-channel immersion.
Which setup should you buy?
Choose the standalone Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar if…
- You want an Atmos-capable system without a separate floor-standing component.
- Your room is small or your seating is close to the television.
- You watch mostly dialogue-led television, news, and moderate-volume films.
- You cannot place a subwoofer or rear speakers conveniently.
- You are sensitive to latency and do not need physical surround channels.
Add the Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer if…
- You want deeper bass for film effects or bass-heavy music.
- The standalone bar sounds thin at your usual listening level.
- You want more impact without buying rear speakers.
- You can place the subwoofer on the floor near a power outlet and tune its position.
Buy the Home Theater Set if…
- You want effects to come from behind and beside the seating position.
- You are building a dedicated movie room or a larger living room system.
- You accept more hardware, more placement decisions, and the slight eARC-latency penalty reported by RTINGS.
- You understand that its surround advantage comes from the two satellites as well as the subwoofer.
What independent reviews actually establish
RTINGS updated its Bose comparison on August 14, 2026 and identifies test methodology version 1.3. Its results support two conclusions about the complete Home Theater Set: lower bass extension and greater surround immersion than the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar. It also reports slightly worse HDMI eARC latency for the set.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Livingetc’s June 25, 2026 review characterizes the standalone bar as a close alternative to a leading premium Atmos bar, while noting that the competing bar has deeper bass on its own and a more mature ecosystem. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a controlled comparison of complete Bose systems, so it should not be treated as a universal ranking.
No independent source in the available material isolates the Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer by comparing the same soundbar in identical conditions with and without it. The strongest defensible statement is therefore directional: the subwoofer system should deliver deeper, more forceful bass, while the full set should create a more enveloping surround field because it adds satellites.
Verdict
The Bose Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar is the better choice for simplicity, compact rooms, and listeners who want Atmos from one enclosure. Adding the Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer is the more defensible upgrade when your priority is deeper low bass and greater impact. The Bose Home Theater Set is the most immersive option only when you also want physical rear speakers; its independent comparison results cannot be credited to the subwoofer alone, and its eARC latency is slightly worse in RTINGS’ testing.
Before ordering, verify the current regional price, stock, firmware, and compatibility list. For existing owners, remember that the Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer is the direct expansion path, while a Bass Module 700 should be treated as a wired option rather than an assumed wireless match.
