Some over-ear headphones may suit your listening priorities better than a Bose model, but there is no reliable brand-wide sound-quality ranking. The clearest evidence-backed choices here are specific Sennheiser, Audio-Technica and Sony models—and each has a different trade-off. For spacious audiophile listening in a quiet room, consider the open-back Sennheiser HD 800 S. For a wired, closed-back option, consider the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x. For wireless listening with noise cancellation, the Sony WH-CH720N is a more relevant comparison. Which sounds better depends on what you value and where you listen.
What “better sound” means in this comparison
Sound quality is not one score that applies to every listener or every headphone from a brand. A headphone may offer a more spacious presentation or a tuning that suits your preferences, while another may be more practical for commuting because it blocks outside noise. The useful comparison is model by model: sound character and detail, open- or closed-back construction, wired or wireless operation, noise cancellation, fit, and intended setting.
That distinction matters when comparing these models with Bose. A wired, open-back audiophile headphone is not a like-for-like travel replacement for a noise-cancelling Bose set. Bose remains a relevant option when active noise cancellation, comfort, and isolation are priorities; a different model may be preferable when your main goal is listening in a quiet room.
Which over-ear headphones are worth considering?
Sennheiser HD 800 S: spacious sound for quiet-room listening
For a sound-focused, at-home alternative, the Sennheiser HD 800 S is the strongest example in this comparison. RTINGS identifies it as the best audiophile over-ear headphone it has tested for listeners prioritizing sound quality, and describes its presentation as spacious. That makes it a candidate for focused listening in a quiet room—not a universal upgrade over Bose.
#1 Best Overall
- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
The open-back design is a decisive trade-off. Sound can escape, and the headphones do not isolate you from your surroundings; RTINGS also notes less bass than with closed-back designs. They are wired and passive, so they are not a substitute for a wireless ANC headphone on a commute. See RTINGS’ over-ear headphone guide for its assessment and update date.
Sennheiser HDB 630: a wireless option, not the same proposition
If you want a wireless over-ear Sennheiser rather than a wired open-back model, the HDB 630 is included in What Hi-Fi’s current over-ear guide. It addresses a different use case from the HD 800 S: wireless convenience rather than the HD 800 S’s specific open-back, quiet-room proposition. The guide’s inclusion supports considering it, but does not establish that every Sennheiser model sounds better than every Bose headphone.
Rank #2
- Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling: 2 internal and 2 external mics work in tandem to detect external noise and effectively reduce up to 90% of it, no matter in trains or offices.

- Dual-Connections: Connect to two devices simultaneously with Bluetooth 5.0 and instantly switch between them. Whether you're working on your laptop, or need to take a phone call, audio from your Bluetooth headphones will automatically play from the device you need to hear from.
- App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.

Audio-Technica ATH-M50x: wired, closed-back listening and studio use
The Audio-Technica ATH-M50x is a wired, closed-back model that can suit listening at home or studio-related use. RTINGS describes its profile as well balanced overall, with some extra emphasis in the bass range that adds warmth. It also says the model works across genres and is a popular DJ and studio choice.

- INCREDIBLE SOUND: Custom acoustic platform delivers rich, balanced audio for music, calls and everyday listening.
- LOSSLESS AUDIO SUPPORT: USB-C lossless audio and sound profiles optimize music quality across devices and environments. Additional option to use the 3.5 mm cable for a standard analog experience.
- ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLING (ANC): block distractions at work, on flights or during your daily commute. Or use Transparency mode to let the sounds of your environment mix in with your music.
- SEAMLESS WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY: One-touch pairing with Apple & Android for easy switching across devices.
- SPATIAL AUDIO IMMERSION: Personalized dynamic head tracking, 360-degree sound for movies, music and immersive everyday listening.
Its closed-back design makes it a more practical option than the HD 800 S when you want less sound leakage, but it is not a wireless ANC headphone. RTINGS notes that the fit is bulky, which may matter during long sessions or when portability is important. Read RTINGS’ ATH-M50x review for its model-specific findings.
Sony WH-CH720N: wireless ANC with a bass-forward character
The Sony WH-CH720N is a wireless, closed-back headphone with active noise cancellation, making it a more direct kind of comparison for travel than an open-back audiophile model. What Hi-Fi characterizes its sound as forceful and robust, with bass that can be somewhat over-enthusiastic. If you prefer a less bass-forward presentation, that tuning may not be an advantage.

How to choose between them and a Bose headphone
Start with the setting and feature you need most, then compare sound within that context:
Best Value
- SONY’S LIGHTEST WIRELESS NOISE CANCELING HEADBAND EVER: Weighing just 192g, our lightest overhead wireless headphones with Noise Canceling yet, for incredible comfort without compromising on technology.
- DUAL NOISE SENSOR TECHNOLOGY: Take noise canceling to the next level with Sony’s Integrated Processor V1, so you can fully immerse yourself in the music.
- ALL DAY COMFORT: Super comfortable and lightweight design.
- SMART FEATURES: Adjustable Ambient Sound mode and Adaptive Sound control features tailors sound to suit the environment around you.
- LONG BATTERY LIFE: Up to 35-hour battery life with quick charging (3 min charge for up to 1 hour of playback).(USB Type-C Cable included
- Quiet-room listening and spacious presentation: The HD 800 S is the clearest fit among these examples, provided sound leakage and the absence of isolation are acceptable.
- Closed-back, wired listening: The ATH-M50x offers a broadly balanced profile with some bass warmth. Factor in its bulky fit.
- Wireless listening: Consider the HDB 630 as a distinct Sennheiser use case; do not treat it as interchangeable with the HD 800 S.
- Travel and noise cancellation: The WH-CH720N is the wireless ANC example here, but its somewhat bass-heavy tuning may not suit every listener. Compare ANC and comfort separately from sound fidelity.
These recommendations are model-specific, based on published assessments from RTINGS and What Hi-Fi. They do not establish that all products from any of these brands outperform Bose across sound quality, fit, isolation, or use cases.
