Sometimes—but don’t assume you can swap in any subwoofer or amplifier. Bose Acoustimass systems use different wiring designs: some route the receiver through the Acoustimass module, and Bose warns that certain speakers must not connect directly to a receiver. Check the exact model and series on the module and speakers, then follow that model’s manual before changing the setup.
Why the Acoustimass model determines what you can change
“Acoustimass” covers systems with different signal paths. The module may be an essential part of how the satellites connect to the receiver or amplifier, rather than a subwoofer you can simply remove and replace. An amplifier and a subwoofer also have separate compatibility requirements: the amplifier must suit the system’s documented wiring and electrical load, while a subwoofer must accept the kind of signal the receiver or amplifier provides.
Bose’s instructions for two Series V systems illustrate the difference:

These instructions apply to the named models, not every product called Acoustimass. Bose’s legacy Acoustimass Bass System guide also says that particular system should be used only with specified Bose speakers; treat that as guidance for that product rather than a universal rule for the range. Can you use a different amplifier?
Possibly, if the amplifier matches the exact system’s documented wiring, impedance, and power guidance. For Acoustimass 5 Series V, Bose gives a receiver/amplifier range of 10–200 watts per channel with 4–8 ohm impedance. That specification is for this system, not a general rating for Acoustimass speakers. Preserve the +/− polarity and use the module’s documented input and output connections.
A Bose amplifier with named compatibility
Bose lists its Bose Music Amplifier as compatible with Acoustimass 3 and Acoustimass 5 stereo speaker systems. The list does not establish compatibility with every Acoustimass model or home theater system. Bose says the amplifier can drive passive speakers rated at 4 ohms or higher; for two connected pairs, it recommends speakers rated at least 8 ohms. Can you replace the Acoustimass module with another subwoofer?
The available Bose compatibility information does not establish a universal third-party subwoofer replacement for Acoustimass systems. A receiver’s subwoofer or bass output does not by itself show that a generic sub can replace the Acoustimass module: the signal type and the system’s required connection path must both match.

Before choosing a different sub, check its manual for the supported input—such as speaker-level, line-level, or LFE—and confirm that the proposed receiver or amplifier provides a compatible output. Also verify whether the Acoustimass manual requires the original module to remain between the receiver and the speakers.
Check your model and plan a safe setup
- Read the labels. Record the full product name and series from the module and speakers. If they have separate labels, record both.
- Find the exact owner’s guide. Use Bose Support and follow that model’s wiring diagram and receiver/amplifier limits. Do not infer a connection from another Acoustimass series.
- Match the amplifier. Check the documented power and impedance guidance, then connect the system using the specified terminals and correct +/− polarity.
- Check the subwoofer’s input and the signal source. Confirm their compatibility in both devices’ documentation; do not treat a bass output as proof that a sub can replace the Acoustimass module.
- Check the module’s safety status if it is older. Bose’s recall covers certain bass modules manufactured before April 1, 2006. Use the recall page to identify the product and serial number. Bose Bass Module Recall instructions.
Check older modules for Bose’s recall
Bose says certain bass modules manufactured before April 1, 2006, sold with select Acoustimass, Lifestyle, and Companion systems, are subject to a voluntary recall because electrical components may fail and pose a fire hazard. The date is the stated boundary for the recalled group, not a claim that every module made before that date is affected. Check the product name and serial number using Bose’s instructions.

If Bose confirms that a module is included, stop using it, unplug it, and follow the return process on the Bose recall page. The recall instructions name Acoustimass 6 III and 15 II among the systems to check and specify particular serial-number digits for those products. Bose recall and product information.
