The Bosch SMS68M38AU/D2 is a discontinued 60 cm Series 6 freestanding dishwasher whose published specifications point to flexible loading, a broad set of cycles and relatively low claimed noise. The available public evidence does not establish how well it cleans or dries in independent testing, so this is best read as a guide to evaluating a used unit—not a performance-score review.
What the SMS68M38AU/D2 offers

The sheet lists six programs: Pots and Pans 70°C, Auto 45–65°C, Eco 45°C, Glass 40°C, Quick wash 45°C and Pre-Rinse. The named options are HalfLoad Plus, VarioSpeed, IntensiveZone and HygienePlus. AquaSensor and LoadSensor are described as adjusting operation based on sensed conditions.

How efficient, quiet and capable is it?
The Bosch sheet lists a 4-star energy rating, 5-star water rating, 12 L of water per wash and 235 kWh of energy use per year. It ties the 12 L and 235 kWh figures to the Eco 45°C program. CHOICE’s public listing reports the same water and annual energy figures. These are published specifications, not independent measurements established by the available evidence. The manufacturer sheet’s publication year is not stated.
Bosch advertises 42 dB and heat-exchanger drying. The accessible public material does not provide independent noise measurements or a drying score for this model. CHOICE’s listing for the exact D2 variant marks detailed expert ratings and wash, dry and noise results as members-only; its public listing does not establish a particular score or recommendation. Will it fit your kitchen?
The Bosch sheet gives dimensions of 845 × 600 × 600 mm, with a height of 815 mm when the top is removed. CHOICE rounds the dimensions to 85 × 60 × 60 cm. CHOICE lists a maximum hot-water inlet temperature of 60°C. Check the full installation document and your site clearances before buying or fitting a used machine; the listed dimensions alone do not confirm that a particular space, connection or door swing is suitable.

What owners report—and what that evidence means
ProductReview.com.au contains individual reports praising quiet operation, cleaning and rack flexibility, alongside reports of faults and repair costs. One owner describes recurring E:19-related repair work; another discusses longer cycles and the flexibility of Auto. These are anecdotes, not controlled tests or a representative failure-rate sample, so they cannot establish how reliable the model is overall.

For a used unit, treat owner reports as prompts for inspection rather than a prediction. Ask about repair history, run a complete cycle if possible, and check for leaks, error codes, poor cleaning or drying, and damaged racks. If a seller cannot demonstrate the appliance working, factor that uncertainty into your decision.
Buying, service and repair considerations
Bosch Australia’s current product page says the SMS68M38AU is no longer available. The variant-specific service page remains available with manuals, installation documents, parts, self-help and care resources. Confirm that any part matches the full SMS68M38AU/D2 variant before ordering, and check current stock and service availability directly.

The specification sheet describes AquaStop Plus as lifetime anti-flood protection and lists a two-year warranty plus a ten-year rust-through warranty for the inner tub. These are sheet claims; coverage depends on the relevant terms, region and purchase date. Do not assume a used appliance retains warranty coverage. How to assess a used SMS68M38AU/D2
- Confirm the identity. Check the appliance rating plate and verify the full model suffix is D2; use that identifier when looking up manuals, parts and support.
- Check the installation. Compare the machine’s dimensions and connection requirements with the available space, and consult the full Bosch installation document before fitting.
- Test operation. If possible, run a complete cycle and check for leaks, error codes, unusual behavior and the condition of the racks and seals.
- Assess the trade-off. Compare its condition and asking price with currently available 60 cm freestanding dishwashers using independently measured cleaning, drying and noise results where available. Compare water and energy figures only when they use the same program and measurement basis.
Verdict
The SMS68M38AU/D2’s published specification is attractive on paper if you value a cutlery drawer, adjustable racks, a 15-place-setting rating and a wide selection of programs. But its key performance scores are not publicly established in the cited material, and the model is discontinued. Consider it only after checking the individual machine’s condition, fit, service options and price against current alternatives; the specifications alone are not enough to judge its real-world performance or reliability.
