Start with the manga if you want the fastest, most focused route through Boruto’s main plot and the currently published sequel material. Start with the anime if you want voice performances, music, color, animated fights, and additional missions and relationship scenes. A practical hybrid is to read the manga first, then choose anime arcs for expanded context and performances.
The short answer: manga for speed, anime for experience
Boruto exists in two connected formats rather than one being a simple scene-for-scene copy of the other. The manga concentrates the principal serialized storyline. The anime adapts that direction while adding connective episodes, character interactions, missions, and setting detail. Major landmarks are related, but the order, surrounding scenes, and amount of supporting material can differ.
| What matters to you | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Reaching the central plot quickly | Manga | It is the compact route through the principal serialized story. |
| Japanese or dubbed performances | Anime | Voice acting, music, color, choreography, and timing add an audiovisual layer. |
| More missions and day-to-day character interaction | Anime | The adaptation expands connective material around the manga storyline. |
| Getting to the latest published sequel material | Manga | The manga is the source of the currently published sequel story; the anime’s release position can differ. |
| Both plot efficiency and added scenes | Hybrid | Read the manga for the core route, then select anime arcs that provide context or showcase important fights. |
There is no authoritative percentage for “filler,” no official manga-to-anime runtime ratio, and no single numerical adaptation-accuracy score. Treat rankings such as “the anime is mostly filler” as fan shorthand, not as an established statistic.
How the Boruto manga and anime are connected
Different jobs for the same broad story
The manga is the most concentrated version of the serialized plot. The anime has room to show training, travel, village life, secondary characters, and consequences that a monthly manga schedule may pass over quickly. That difference in density is the main reason the anime can feel slower even when it is following the same broad direction.

TV Tokyo’s official staff commentary directly rejects the idea that the two versions are completely separate: Mikio Ikemoto explained that the anime would gradually approach the manga content, while Ukyō Kodachi described the anime as expanding ideas planted in the original. That supports a useful description of the anime as an expansion and adaptation, not as a wholly unrelated continuity.
Where the project came from
The concept began with the 2015 Boruto film. After readers wanted more stories about Boruto, Sarada, and their peers, the idea continued as a sequel manga. Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump listing credits Masashi Kishimoto with the original work and supervision, Mikio Ikemoto with the manga, and Ukyō Kodachi with the script. The manga’s serialization was listed in Shueisha’s 2016 issue 23.
Those credits explain why the manga should not be treated as an unrelated fan continuation, while also explaining why “Kishimoto wrote every chapter” is an inaccurate description of the original production arrangement.

The anime has its own production structure
TV Tokyo’s official Boruto site separates introduction, cast and staff, characters, episodes, broadcast information, music, DVDs, movies, and specials. That organization reflects a television production with its own pacing and presentation decisions. It does not by itself establish that every television-only scene is disposable or that every scene has identical status to a manga panel.
Key story differences you will notice
1. Narrative density and pacing
Reading the manga removes the pauses required by weekly or seasonal television scheduling. You can move from one plot turn to the next without waiting for an episode to establish a side mission or revisit a relationship. This is the strongest reason to choose the manga when your priority is catching up efficiently.
The anime can spend an entire episode on a mission, a conversation, or a character who receives only brief attention in the manga. Those scenes may make the setting feel larger, but they also create a longer route to the next major manga-derived development. Because no authoritative source publishes a fixed pacing ratio, the practical question is whether you enjoy that additional material rather than how many minutes it adds.

2. Anime-original and expanded material
Anime material can add context, missions, and interactions that are not laid out in the same way in the manga. Some episodes build relationships or establish a local problem before the television version reaches a manga plot point. Others give supporting characters a role that would otherwise be brief.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Calling all of this “non-canon” is too blunt. The official commentary describes the anime as moving toward the manga while expanding ideas from the original. A more precise label is anime-original expansion: material created for television that may provide connective context, while the major direction remains linked to the manga.
3. Shared landmarks, different sequencing
The versions are connected, but the anime is not a panel-by-panel duplicate. Expect shared major conflicts and revelations alongside differences in when a character appears, how an investigation unfolds, which conversations are shown, and how much time is spent on a supporting cast.
If you switch formats, do not assume that a familiar event will begin at the same chapter or episode position. Use the manga’s chapter headings and the anime’s official episode descriptions to orient yourself, and allow for repeated setup when the television version has already dramatized material you read.
4. Tone, performance, and action presentation
The manga controls the pace through page turns, panel composition, and your reading speed. The anime controls it through voice delivery, music, sound effects, color, camera movement, and fight choreography. A quiet exchange can feel more intimate in one format; a battle can feel more dynamic in the other.
The anime’s added scenes are therefore not only extra plot. They can change how long a character remains in a moment, how a technique is staged, or how an emotional beat lands. If those performance elements are central to why you watch anime, the additional runtime is part of the value rather than merely a delay.

Is the Boruto anime canon or filler?
“Canon” is being used too broadly when it means only “copied directly from the manga.” The documented relationship is more nuanced:
- Manga-derived material: television episodes that adapt events and plot direction from the serialized manga.
- Anime-original expansion: television-created missions, connective arcs, scenes, or character development that broaden the world around that direction.
- Adaptation differences: changes in sequencing, scene length, transitions, and emphasis that occur even when the broad event is shared.
The official staff comments support the anime gradually approaching manga content and expanding ideas from the original. They do not provide a universal rule that every anime-original episode must be ignored, nor do they publish a definitive filler percentage. If your goal is only the shortest main route, you can prioritize manga chapters. If you want the television version’s fuller setting and relationships, evaluate an arc by what it adds instead of discarding it solely because it is not a direct chapter adaptation.
Choose the manga first when these priorities fit you
You want the central story with minimal detours
The manga is the most efficient starting point for readers who want the principal serialized plot. It also avoids waiting for an anime broadcast to reach material that is already published in print or digitally.
You want the latest published sequel material
The official Naruto site presents Boruto: Two Blue Vortex as Mikio Ikemoto’s ongoing sequel manga and provides a recap leading into it. Publication status and release cadence can change, so check the current official listing when you begin. The general advantage remains stable: the manga is where the newest published sequel chapters appear first.
You prefer reading to long-form television
A chapter lets you control the pace, reread a reveal immediately, and stop at a natural break. That makes the manga a good fit for readers who dislike waiting through connective arcs or who want to catch up before discussing current developments.
You want to form your own visual interpretation
Ikemoto’s paneling, character designs, and fight layouts are the direct visual language of the sequel manga. Reading first lets you experience those choices without an adaptation’s timing or staging influencing your first impression.

Choose the anime first when these priorities fit you
You care about voices, music, and motion
The anime adds performances that the manga cannot reproduce: vocal inflection, pauses, musical themes, sound design, and animated movement. This is especially relevant if you already follow the Japanese or dubbed cast or prefer action to unfold in real time.
You want more of the world between major plot points
Anime-original missions and connective stories can show how the village functions, how younger characters work together, and how relationships change outside a major confrontation. They may answer the kind of “what happened between those events?” question that a compact manga chapter leaves open.
You enjoy supporting characters and gradual development
Television has more opportunities to give side characters a conversation, assignment, or conflict of their own. If your favorite part of the franchise is the ensemble rather than only Boruto’s next major battle, the longer route can be rewarding.
You are comfortable with an adaptation that may move differently
The anime can spend longer on setup and may not match the manga’s sequence exactly. Start with it only if that flexibility sounds enjoyable; otherwise, you may interpret normal connective pacing as a problem with the format.

- Continue through the currently available manga storyline. Keep track of the chapter where you stop so you can identify the corresponding television material later.
- Return to the anime for arcs or episodes you specifically want. Prioritize major fights, introductions that benefit from voice acting, and anime-original stories featuring characters you want to know better.
- Expect overlap when you switch. The anime may re-stage a plot point you already read and surround it with different setup. That repetition is normal, not evidence that you selected the wrong episode.
- Use official episode descriptions and arc labels to navigate. Do not rely on a fan-made “filler percentage” as a substitute for deciding whether an arc’s characters or setting interest you.
This route works particularly well for readers who want to discuss the latest manga developments while still watching the anime’s performances and expanded scenes at their own pace.

What happens when you switch from one format to the other?
Anime to manga
Switching to the manga usually feels faster, but you may encounter a compressed version of a relationship or mission that the anime developed at length. When a character seems to appear with less introduction than you remember, compare the surrounding chapter rather than assuming the manga skipped an essential plot twist.
Begin at the manga’s opening if you want the cleanest comparison. If you are switching because you want the latest story, locate the last major manga-derived event you watched, then read a few chapters earlier than your estimate. The formats can sequence setup differently, and a small amount of overlap is safer than missing a transition.
Manga to anime
Expect additional introductions, transitions, and conversations. The anime may explain a location or motivation before adapting the manga event you remember. Watch the full arc when you want that context; skim or select episodes only when your goal is a specific performance or fight.

Why exact episode-to-chapter shortcuts can fail
There is no authoritative one-to-one conversion table because an episode can combine material, add original scenes, or pause for an anime-created arc. A chapter number alone cannot guarantee that the next episode begins at the same beat. Treat any conversion guide as a navigation aid, not as a continuity rule.
How the sequel context affects your choice
Two Blue Vortex is presented on the official Naruto site as the continuing manga series by Mikio Ikemoto, with a recap leading into it. That makes the manga the natural route if your immediate goal is to follow the sequel’s latest published developments.
The anime may eventually adapt additional manga material, but its release position is a separate, changing fact. Check current official episode and broadcast information before assuming that an animated version has reached a particular sequel event. Do not treat a temporary gap between formats as proof that one has been abandoned or that their broad story direction is unrelated.
The franchise’s antagonists also reflect an intentional change from Naruto. In an official Naruto-site interview, Masashi Kishimoto said Boruto uses unreasonable antagonists and obstacles that must be overcome for the sake of human life itself. That emphasis on different threats is part of the sequel’s identity in either format; the manga gives you the most direct serialized route, while the anime can spend more time showing how those threats affect the wider cast.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDecision checklist
- Choose manga first if your top priority is speed, the central plot, or the latest published sequel chapter.
- Choose anime first if voice acting, music, color, choreography, and additional character material matter more than a compact pace.
- Choose hybrid if you want to read the main route and then watch selected expansions.
- Use “anime-original expansion” rather than automatically calling every non-manga episode filler.
- Expect shared major landmarks with different sequencing and supporting scenes.
- Do not rely on an unverified filler percentage or a fixed manga-to-anime runtime claim; no authoritative figure establishes one.
- When changing formats, allow overlap and check the current official episode or chapter information.
Bottom line
For most readers asking which version to start with, the manga is the best default: it reaches Boruto’s principal story and the currently published sequel material with the least friction. The anime is the better first choice when the performance of the story matters as much as its plot, and its expanded missions and relationships are a feature rather than a detour. Reading first and then selecting anime arcs gives you both advantages without requiring you to watch every connective episode before you know whether it suits your priorities.
