Researchers have reported the first detection in Chile of pepper necrotic spot virus (PNSV), a putative new-to-Chile orthotospovirus previously reported in Peru. The virus was found alongside endemic tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) in pepper and tomato samples from four fields in the northern Arica y Parinacota region during the 2020–2024 growing seasons. The finding raises concern about further southward spread, but it does not show that all Chilean crops are infected or establish national prevalence, yield losses or a confirmed transmission rate.
What the Chilean study found
The peer-reviewed study, “Southward Spread of Pepper Necrotic Spot Orthotospovirus into Chile: Identification and Characterization,” was conducted by researchers at Washington State University and the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. It examined pepper fruits and tomatoes showing spotted-wilt-like damage in Arica y Parinacota, Chile’s northernmost agricultural region.
| Finding | What is established |
|---|---|
| PNSV status | First reported detection in Chile of a putative new-to-Chile orthotospovirus previously reported in Peru. |
| Sampling period | Growing seasons from 2020 through 2024. |
| Sites | Samples came from four production fields in Arica y Parinacota. |
| Other virus detected | Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), which is already endemic in Chile, was also present. |
| Geographic focus | The Azapa and Lluta valleys, important suppliers of winter peppers and tomatoes. |
Washington State research associate Prabu Gnanasekaran sequenced and analyzed viral RNA. The Chilean and U.S. teams collaborated virtually across about 6,000 miles (9,700 kilometers), using molecular results to confirm that a virus previously reported in Peru had moved into Chile.

Arica y Parinacota lies close to Peru, making cross-border movement a plausible concern for plant-health authorities. The study calls for additional epidemiological work to determine how the virus arrived and how it may move within Chile.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The production geography gives the finding significance beyond the sampled fields. The Azapa and Lluta valleys ship tomatoes and peppers south between May and September, when central Chile’s production drops. That seasonal route means an outbreak in the north could affect a wider supply chain even though the study does not quantify national prevalence or market losses.
“Viruses never respect borders,” said Hanu Pappu, Chuey Endowed Chair and Samuel H. Smith Distinguished Professor in Plant Virology at Washington State University.

Symptoms growers should watch for
The investigation began after market fruit showed visual damage associated with spotted wilt. Reported signs included:
Recommended Free Tools
- Rings of dying tissue (necrotic rings).
- Bronze discoloration.
- Fruit deformation and other abnormal growth.
- More severe field symptoms in peppers than in tomatoes.
These symptoms are not sufficient to distinguish PNSV from TSWV or other causes. Suspect plants require laboratory testing rather than a visual diagnosis, especially because both viruses were detected in the same investigation.

How the virus is spread
PNSV belongs to the orthotospovirus group, an insect-borne category of plant pathogens. The researchers identified thrips at the sampled sites by morphology and PCR assays targeting ITS and MtCOI genetic markers. Among known orthotospovirus vectors, Frankliniella occidentalis was the only thrips species identified in those samples.
This confirms the vector species present at the investigated sites, but it does not establish a transmission rate, the complete pathway from Peru, or the extent of spread across Chile. Movement of infected plants, plant material and insect vectors remains an epidemiological question for follow-up studies.

How researchers confirmed PNSV
- They collected symptomatic pepper and tomato material from the affected production fields.
- They used both species-specific and generic reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) primers to identify orthotospoviruses.
- They compared the viral RNA sequence and analyzed it to characterize the Chilean detections.
- They identified thrips morphologically and confirmed them with PCR tests aimed at ITS and MtCOI markers.
The molecular work separated the newly detected PNSV from TSWV, the established Chilean virus found in the same sampling effort.

What growers can do now
There is no known cure for PNSV. The university reports emphasize containment and preparedness rather than a validated treatment or guaranteed control product.

- Inspect early. Train field and packing-house staff to flag rings of necrosis, bronze tissue and deformed fruit, particularly in peppers.
- Confirm suspicious plants. Send samples for virus testing; symptoms alone cannot identify PNSV.
- Manage thrips. Monitor the crop and surrounding vegetation for thrips, with special attention to Frankliniella occidentalis, the species identified in the sampled fields. Any control program must follow local pesticide labels and resistance-management rules.
- Control movement of suspect material. Keep potentially infected plants and plant debris from being moved to clean fields while testing and plant-health guidance are obtained.
- Use resistance when it is actually available. Resistant varieties are a stated research priority, but the reported study does not establish a commercially validated PNSV-resistant cultivar.
- Report and document findings. Records of location, crop, date, symptoms, test results and thrips presence will help build the epidemiological evidence needed for mitigation.
What remains unknown
The detection is important, but its scale is not yet defined. The available study and university account do not establish:
- How common PNSV is across Chilean pepper and tomato production.
- A confirmed rate of transmission by the thrips found in the fields.
- A national yield-loss percentage or total economic loss attributable to PNSV.
- A commercially validated treatment, pesticide program or diagnostic kit specific to PNSV.
- A proven resistant pepper or tomato cultivar.
Further field surveys and transmission studies are needed before the risk can be quantified or a national control strategy evaluated.
Why plant virologists are watching the finding
Washington State University says orthotospoviruses infect more than 1,000 plant species and cause billions of dollars in crop damage worldwide, including in beans, peanuts, peppers, soybeans, tomatoes and ornamentals. That broad host range is why early identification matters even when a report covers only a few fields.
“Training first responders to identify this new virus now becomes a priority,” said Marlene Rosales, associate professor and virologist at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.
For now, the Chilean report is best understood as a confirmed detection and a warning about possible southward movement from a Peru-adjacent production zone—not proof of a nationwide epidemic. The study’s next practical value will come from surveillance, vector monitoring and evidence showing where PNSV is present and how efficiently it spreads.
