If your BOOX Tappy pairs but does not advance pages, pairing is only the first checkpoint. Confirm that the reader meets BOOX’s firmware and Bluetooth requirements, pair the accessory again through the reader’s Bluetooth menu, and then enable the reading app’s volume-button page-turn setting. BOOX says its page-turn buttons simulate Android volume buttons, so an app must interpret those events as page turns. A Bluetooth connection can therefore succeed even when the open book app ignores the button presses.
What has to work for Tappy to turn a page
Tappy is a Bluetooth remote, not a universal page-turn protocol. Three separate layers must cooperate:
- Reader support: The BOOX device must support Bluetooth and run firmware V4.2 or later. BOOX’s product listing specifically names the Note Air5 C, Palma 2 Pro and other compatible models.
- Bluetooth pairing: Tappy must be discoverable and selected in the BOOX reader’s Bluetooth device list.
- App input handling: The reading app must accept the button event. BOOX documents that built-in page-turn buttons and magnetic-case buttons simulate Android volume buttons; Tappy can encounter the same app-level limitation.
A Tappy that appears as “Connected” has passed only the wireless link test. It has not proved that the current app maps either button to next-page or previous-page actions.

Supported firmware and models
Open the official Tappy listing for your model and verify that the reader has firmware V4.2 or later and Bluetooth support. The listing names Note Air5 C and Palma 2 Pro as examples, while “other BOOX devices” is conditional on those requirements. An older build or an unlisted model can explain a connection that produces no useful page-turn action.

Physical characteristics
The official BOOX Hong Kong product page lists Tappy at 43 × 37 × 25 mm and approximately 29 g. Those figures identify the accessory but do not indicate app compatibility, range, battery life or reliability. No independent failure-rate or success-rate statistic has been established.
Record your software versions
Before changing settings, note the reader model, firmware/build number, reading-app name and app version. These details let you distinguish a device-wide problem from an app-specific one and are required if you later submit a BOOX feedback report.
Pair Tappy correctly on the BOOX reader
- Turn on Bluetooth. From the BOOX Home screen, open Settings > Bluetooth. Alternatively, open Control Center and long-press the Bluetooth control to reach the device-selection screen.
- Make Tappy discoverable. Turn Tappy on, then press both Tappy buttons together to enter pairing mode. The two-button action is documented in an independent hands-on report.
- Select the accessory. When Tappy appears in the BOOX Bluetooth list, tap its name and wait for the status to change to connected. Keep the accessory close to the reader during this first pairing.
- Test outside the reading app. Press each button once while the Bluetooth page is still visible. The reader may not display a visible response there, but this confirms that the device remains connected while you move to the next test.
- Retry after removing a stale entry. If the name appears as saved but will not connect, use the reader’s option to forget or unpair that entry, restart Bluetooth, place Tappy back into pairing mode and select it again. Pairing a second time is preferable to repeatedly pressing buttons while the accessory is not discoverable.
Configure the reading app to accept the button events
Enable volume-button page turning
BOOX’s Help Center explains that “The built-in page-turn buttons or the buttons on the magnetic case simulate the volume buttons in the Android OS.” Look in the reading app’s reading, navigation or gesture settings for an option named Turn Pages with Volume Controls, or wording with the same meaning. Enable it, return to the book and test both buttons.

The exact menu name varies by app and version. If no volume-control or hardware-key option exists, the app may not expose a way to map Tappy’s events. Do not infer a Bluetooth fault merely because the setting is absent.
Use a known BOOX-supported reader as a control
Open a reading app that is known to work with your BOOX device and test Tappy there. If pages advance in that app, Bluetooth pairing and the accessory are probably functioning; the failing app needs a compatible volume-key setting or an update. If no BOOX-supported reader responds, return to firmware and pairing checks before troubleshooting an individual app.
Kindle, Kobo, Libby and other third-party apps
Support is app-specific and can change with app updates. Test each target app separately and record whether the buttons do nothing, move in the wrong direction, or change the device volume. A volume change proves that the app is receiving an Android volume event but is not treating it as navigation. If the app has no page-turn-with-volume option, its developer may not support this input on your BOOX build.

Check BOOX app management and optimization
Open Apps > App Management and confirm that the reading app is installed, enabled and current. Review the app’s BOOX optimization controls as well. Aggressive background management can affect how an app behaves after sleep or when it is reopened.
BOOX notes that enabling auto-start can increase power use and may slow the device. Use it only when your testing shows that the app needs to start or resume in the background. Changing auto-start is not a substitute for enabling volume-based page turning; it addresses lifecycle behavior, not the meaning of the button event.
Diagnose the symptom you actually see
Tappy is missing from the Bluetooth list
- Confirm Tappy is powered on.
- Press both buttons to enter pairing mode again.
- Keep the reader on Settings > Bluetooth while searching.
- Check that the BOOX model has Bluetooth and meets the V4.2-or-later requirement.
- If an old Tappy entry is saved, forget it before attempting a new pairing.
Tappy says connected but buttons do nothing
First test a BOOX-supported reader. If it also ignores the buttons, verify the firmware version and repeat the pairing procedure. If the control works elsewhere, the original app is the likely boundary; inspect its hardware-key or volume-control settings.

The buttons change volume
This is a useful diagnostic rather than proof that Tappy is defective. The app is receiving Android volume-button events, but it is applying the system volume action. Turn on its volume-page-turn setting if one exists. Without such a setting, that app may not support this style of remote.
Only one direction works
Check the app’s mapping and test in another book or document. A single-direction response can come from an app that maps only one volume key, a reader mode with restricted navigation, or a pairing state that needs to be removed and recreated. Capture which physical button works and whether the result differs between apps.

Wake the reader and check Bluetooth before opening the book. If Tappy reconnects but page turning does not resume, force-close and reopen the reading app, then test again. Review app-management and optimization settings, but avoid enabling auto-start unless needed because BOOX warns that it can consume more power and slow the device. If the failure always follows sleep, include that exact sequence in your support report; sleep persistence is device- and software-specific.

Use a controlled test to isolate the cause
- Charge or power Tappy according to its normal operating procedure and place it beside the reader.
- Confirm the BOOX model and firmware build meet the official V4.2-or-later Bluetooth requirement.
- Forget any existing Tappy entry and pair again through Settings > Bluetooth.
- Open one BOOX-supported reading app and enable volume-button page turning.
- Press each Tappy button several times while a page with an obvious next-page target is open.
- Repeat the same test in Kindle, Kobo, Libby or the other app in which you need the accessory.
- Write down the result for each app, including “no response,” “volume changed,” “one direction only” or “works after reopening.”
This sequence changes one variable at a time. It prevents an app setting from being blamed on Bluetooth and prevents a stale pairing record from being blamed on an app.
When replacing Tappy makes sense
Replacement is reasonable only after you establish that the reader meets the firmware requirement, Tappy can pair reliably and the target app either supports volume-button page turning or has no such control. Compare alternatives on four practical axes:

Do not treat a different accessory as a guaranteed fix for an app that ignores Android volume events. If your required app lacks a compatible setting, changing the app may be more effective than changing the remote.

Send BOOX a useful software report
For a problem that remains after the controlled test, use Settings > Feedback on the BOOX reader. Include:
- Exact BOOX model and firmware/build version.
- Tappy’s pairing status and whether both buttons enter pairing mode.
- Reading-app name and version.
- The app’s volume/page-turn setting and whether it was enabled.
- Exact button behavior: no response, volume change, one direction, intermittent operation or failure after sleep.
- The steps that reproduce the issue and whether a BOOX-supported reader works.
BOOX provides service-request routes based on the purchase channel. Use the appropriate route after submitting the software details so support can separate an app-compatibility issue from a hardware or account case.
Practical conclusion
The fastest fix is usually not a factory reset. Verify the V4.2-or-later firmware boundary, enter Tappy pairing mode by pressing both buttons, pair it from the BOOX Bluetooth screen, and enable volume-button page turning in the reading app. A known BOOX reader provides the control test: success there points to third-party app support, while failure everywhere points back to firmware, pairing or device compatibility.
