Digging up a bone fossil is only one part of paleontology. Scientists first document where it lies and how it relates to the surrounding geology, then collect it only with permission, prepare and stabilize it, and preserve its records with the specimen. That context can be as important as the fossil itself: removing a bone without documenting its original position and orientation can erase evidence needed to interpret it.

Why a fossil’s position matters

A fossil is more than an object embedded in rock. Its locality, geologic setting, position, and orientation can help researchers understand how it was buried and what it can reveal. The National Park Service (NPS) notes that field documentation connects specimens to their location and geological context; recording this information is part of the scientific work, not an administrative step after excavation.

That is why casual removal is not a harmless shortcut. Once a fossil is detached from its setting without adequate records, some of the evidence associated with it may be impossible to recover. Precise locality information can also be sensitive: NPS says coordinates may need to remain confidential to protect fossil sites.

Before collection, check who has authority

Permission depends on the land and the agency or owner responsible for it. Do not assume rules for one site apply to another state, private parcel, or country. On NPS-administered land, paleontological research and collecting require a scientific research and collecting permit. Federal permit terms define the approved research, methods, and arrangements for curation of collected material and its records. The NPS federal permitting guidance was last updated April 4, 2023: NPS paleontological research permits.

In a U.S. national park, recreational, commercial, and educational fossil collecting is prohibited; scientific collection requires an approved permit. If you encounter a fossil as a visitor, do not dig it up or take it away. The NPS instruction is to photograph it, record its location, leave it where it is, and tell a ranger: NPS visitor guidance on fossils.

How authorized fossil work proceeds

1. Locate and document the find

Field teams document a specimen’s locality and geologic context, including its original position and orientation. Paleontological fieldwork may use grids and tools similar to those used in archaeology, but the project plan determines what documentation and methods are appropriate. The goal is to preserve the connection between the specimen and its site records.

2. Recover it under the project plan

There is no single excavation recipe that applies to every fossil. Authorized recovery follows the approved project methods and the land manager’s permit conditions. The critical principle is to keep the specimen linked to its field documentation. Avoid publishing exact coordinates for a sensitive fossil locality.

3. Prepare the fossil in a lab

After recovery, preparation removes matrix—the surrounding rock or sediment—from the fossil. Preparators select methods for the particular specimen. NPS describes air scribes, which remove matrix without touching the fossil, and fine tools such as dental picks and micro-needles for delicate detail work. A Smithsonian educational resource also demonstrates an air scribe being used to prepare a Ceratosaurus vertebra. These are examples of specialist laboratory equipment, not instructions for working on an unknown find: Smithsonian fossil preparation resource.

4. Stabilize fragile material

Some fossils need support during or after preparation. NPS describes reversible plastics dissolved in acetone for stabilization, as well as support cradles made from materials including plaster bandages, plaster and burlap, quilt batting, or foam. The appropriate treatment depends on the specimen; it should not be improvised from a general recipe.

5. Record treatment and arrange curation

Preparation records can document the fossil, hours spent working on it, tools or chemicals used, and any damage that was already present. NPS emphasizes documenting work and preservatives, and says trained professionals should handle fossil collection and preparation. The specimen and its records need an appropriate curatorial home under the terms of the project and applicable land-management authority. See the John Day Fossil Beds fossil preparation laboratory.

Why fossil preparation is specialist work

Preparation can expose fossils to hazards from debris and dust, tool vibration, and noise. NPS preparators use eye protection, face masks, vibration protection, and earmuffs. Air scribes and chemical stabilizers are professional tools and materials; an unfamiliar fossil may be fragile, and an incorrect intervention can damage it. NPS advises that only trained professionals attempt fossil collection and preparation.

Professional practice also depends on records. The John Day Fossil Beds laboratory describes documenting each preparation step, including the specimen, time spent, tools or chemicals, and pre-existing damage. Those notes help preserve the specimen’s treatment history alongside the fossil.

What to do if you find a bone fossil

  1. Leave it in place. Do not dig, pry, or remove it, especially in a national park.
  2. Photograph it where it is. Include enough of the surrounding area to show its context without disturbing the site.
  3. Record the location. Mark the spot on a map or record coordinates, but do not post sensitive locality details publicly.
  4. Tell the land manager. In a national park, report the find to a ranger. Elsewhere, contact the relevant landowner or managing agency and follow its rules before any collection.

Field recovery and laboratory preparation are different

Stage Purpose Authority and expertise What it preserves
Observe and document in place Record the find and its geological setting without removing it. A visitor should report a national-park find to a ranger; research work on NPS land requires the applicable permit. Location, context, and the fossil’s original position.
Authorized field recovery Collect a specimen using the approved project methods. Requires permission from the relevant land manager; methods are project-specific. The specimen’s connection to its locality and field records.
Laboratory preparation and stabilization Remove matrix and support fragile material. Specialist work by trained preparators using appropriate safety controls. The fossil itself, its treatment history, and its curatorial records.
