BOMBANANA! is an online co-op bomb-defusal game built for exactly three players. Each player is a different monkey—blind, deaf, or mute—and each has only part of the information needed to disarm the bomb. The challenge is communicating observations, manual instructions, and physical actions across those restrictions. Steam confirms online co-op, keyboard and mouse options, full controller support, and a “Save Anytime” feature; it does not document how shared co-op saves are owned or resumed.

What is BOMBANANA!?

BOMBANANA! is a chaotic puzzle game for a fixed team of three. The official Steam description assigns one player to each of three roles: the blind monkey, the deaf monkey, and the mute monkey. Everyone works on the same bomb, but no one has a complete view of the problem. A successful run depends less on reflexes than on translating information between teammates before time, patience, or the bomb runs out.

This is not a three-player game in which everyone performs the same task. The role restrictions are the puzzle. One player can physically manipulate the bomb but cannot read its displays; another can consult the written disposal manual but cannot speak; and the third can inspect the bomb and talk, but cannot hear the other players. The team must create a reliable information relay rather than simply calling out button presses.

How the three monkey roles work

Role What the player can do What the player cannot do Primary responsibility
Blind monkey Touch and operate the bomb’s controls. Cannot see colors or read the bomb’s screens. Carry out the physical actions described by teammates.
Mute monkey Read the bomb-disposal manual. Cannot communicate the answer verbally. Interpret the manual and send instructions through nonverbal means.
Deaf monkey See the bomb and speak to the team. Cannot hear teammates. Report visible bomb details and relay information aloud.

The blind monkey

The blind player is the hands-on operator. They can feel and activate the bomb’s controls, but visual information such as colors, symbols, and screen text is unavailable. Instructions therefore need to be positional and unambiguous: identify the control, its location, and the exact action in an order the player can follow by touch.

The mute monkey

The mute player is the team’s manual reader. This role can look up the relevant procedure but is not allowed to speak the answer. The player must communicate through whatever nonverbal methods the game provides, while the other two players convert that information into spoken instructions and physical actions. The role is not “inactive”; it is the interpretation bottleneck.

The deaf monkey

The deaf player has the visual overview and can speak, making this role the natural observer and announcer. Because they cannot hear teammates, spoken questions or corrections do not reach them. The team must use a method that lets the deaf player notice requests and lets the manual reader get information to them.

A practical information relay

A hands-on PC Gamer account published September 20, 2026 described a relay in which the seeing player reported bomb details, the manual reader interpreted those details, and the blind player performed the resulting actions. That is an observed play-session strategy, not a guaranteed optimal solution, but it illustrates the intended flow: observation, interpretation, then operation. Teams should agree on a repeatable order before touching complicated modules.

How many players do you need?

You need three players for the core format. Steam labels BOMBANANA! as Multiplayer, Co-op, and Online Co-op and describes a fixed team of three monkeys. The roles are designed to be occupied simultaneously; the available material does not describe a supported one-player mode or a smaller official team size.

The documented multiplayer methods are a server browser and room codes. The community FAQ says players can join through either method without first adding one another as Steam friends. That makes a code-based private session practical for a group that has not connected accounts in advance.

Joining a session

  1. Launch BOMBANANA! and open its multiplayer screen.
  2. Choose the server-browser route to find an available room, or create/join a room with the code supplied by the host.
  3. Confirm that all three players are present before assigning roles.
  4. Agree on a communication convention and test voice input before beginning a serious attempt.

The reviewed sources do not confirm local couch co-op or cross-play. Do not assume that three people can share one screen or that players on other platforms can join until the developer documents those features.

Is BOMBANANA! online co-op?

Yes. Online co-op is the game’s documented core format. Steam explicitly lists Online Co-op, and the room-code/server-browser setup is intended for remote teammates. The design also makes a voice channel especially important because information must be translated between players who have different sensory restrictions.

Online play works best when each person keeps a defined job. If everyone talks at once, the deaf player’s inability to hear and the mute player’s inability to speak can create a loop in which the crucial manual instruction never reaches the operator. Use short, labeled reports and pause after each instruction so the next player knows when to act.

Do you need a microphone?

The Steam Community FAQ states: “2 of the 3 roles require a microphone; however, one role, the mute monkey, is not allowed to speak, so you don’t need a microphone to play this role.” In practical terms, the blind and deaf roles are the two speaking-dependent positions, while the mute role does not require speaking.

A USB gaming headset with a microphone is a sensible accessory for the two speaking roles because it keeps callouts close to the player and reduces room echo. It is not a requirement for the mute role. Before joining a room, select the intended input device in your operating system and voice-chat software, check that the microphone meter moves, and agree on a backup text channel for notices that a player cannot hear.

Accessibility and input support

Steam’s listing provides an unusually explicit set of accessibility and control entries. The following features were listed on the October 16, 2026 store snapshot; store capabilities can change with updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Feature What the listing establishes Why it matters
Save Anytime Listed as an accessibility feature. Allows progress to be saved without relying only on a fixed checkpoint schedule; the multiplayer ownership details are not documented.
No quick-time events Playable without quick-time events. Defusal is not dependent on rapid timed button prompts.
Keyboard-only A keyboard-only option is listed. Useful for players who cannot use a mouse.
Mouse-only A mouse-only option is listed. Useful for players who prefer pointer input.
Stereo sound Stereo audio is supported. Provides a standard two-channel output option.
Surround sound Surround audio is supported. Supports compatible multi-speaker or headset setups.
Controller support Full controller support is listed, including Xbox and PlayStation controllers and Steam Input API support. Lets players choose a gamepad workflow instead of keyboard and mouse.
Steam Deck The game is marked Steam Deck Verified. Steam has certified the listed Deck compatibility level, subject to future updates.

Accessibility options do not remove the role restrictions: a player still has to solve the communication puzzle. They do give teams more choice over how to interact with the game and avoid quick-time-event pressure.

Does BOMBANANA! save progress?

The official listing confirms a “Save Anytime” capability. That is the complete documented guarantee. The reviewed sources do not explain whether a save belongs to the host, whether all three players retain progress, whether another team can resume the run, or how online state is synchronized between sessions.

For a co-op group, treat the save as a feature whose multiplayer behavior must be verified in the current build rather than as proof of a shared campaign system. Keep the same host and team when possible, record the room or session details, and test saving and reloading with a low-stakes run before depending on it for a long session. Do not promise that a different host or a substitute player can continue from the same state.

How to approach a bomb-defusal round

  1. Assign roles deliberately. Choose the player who is comfortable operating controls for the blind role, the strongest reader for the mute role, and the clearest visual reporter for the deaf role.
  2. Establish a vocabulary. Define how you will identify positions, colors, symbols, and confirmation states. Consistent terms are more valuable than speed.
  3. Inspect before acting. The deaf monkey reports what is visible, while the blind monkey waits for a complete instruction rather than guessing.
  4. Interpret the manual. The mute monkey finds the matching procedure and communicates the relevant condition or sequence without speaking.
  5. Relay one action at a time. The speaking player converts the manual information into a clear command for the blind operator, then waits for confirmation.
  6. Verify the result. Check the bomb’s new state before moving to the next module. If it changed unexpectedly, stop and restate the last known condition.

This staged process is slower than everyone improvising, but it limits the most common failure: an accurate observation being paired with the wrong manual rule or the wrong physical control.

Common problems and practical fixes

Everyone talks at once

Use a speaking order: observer reports, manual reader interprets, operator confirms. Keep reports short and ask for a verbal “ready” before giving the next action.

The deaf player misses a request

Because that role cannot hear, do not rely on a spoken question reaching them. Make requests visible through the in-game communication method available to your team, or establish a predictable turn-taking pattern so the deaf player knows when to look for a response.

The mute player has the answer but cannot say it

Remember that the restriction is part of the puzzle. Have the mute player use the game’s permitted nonverbal communication, and let the speaking player translate it for the blind operator. Do not interpret silence as a lack of information.

A microphone is not detected

Check the operating-system input device, the voice-chat input selection, and the physical mute switch on the headset. Test levels before launching a bomb attempt. If one player cannot use a microphone, assign that person the mute role rather than assuming the speaking roles will work without audio.

You cannot find a teammate

Use the room code or server browser described by the community FAQ, and verify that everyone is searching the same region or room listing. The documented flow does not require adding one another as Steam friends.

You expect local play or cross-play

Neither is confirmed in the reviewed sources. Plan for three online PC players unless the current store page or developer announcements explicitly add another mode.

Current release and support details

Steam lists September 2, 2026 as the release date, with Lefto Studio as developer and TARK as publisher. The listing shows interface and subtitle support in 15 languages and 23 achievements. Those store details are time-sensitive and may change after updates.

Steam directs technical-support questions to its support system and community discussions. The community FAQ directs bug reports to the Steam forums or the game’s Discord. Include your game version, operating system, controller or keyboard setup, role assignments, and the exact step that failed when reporting a problem; those details make a role-specific communication bug easier to reproduce.

On the Steam page snapshot dated October 16, 2026, 95% of 1,333 user reviews from the last 30 days were positive. That is a dated store metric, not a permanent rating or a guarantee that every team will find the communication format comfortable.

Who will enjoy BOMBANANA!?

If your group wants… BOMBANANA! fit
A fixed, coordinated team challenge Strong fit: the core design is three roles working on one bomb.
Asymmetric information Strong fit: every role sees or communicates only part of the solution.
Voice-led cooperation Strong fit for groups willing to use microphones and a disciplined speaking order.
Solo play, local couch co-op, or confirmed cross-play Not established by the reviewed listing; verify current support before buying for that use.
Flexible input and no quick-time events Good fit according to the listed keyboard-only, mouse-only, controller, and no-QTE options.

The central question is not whether your group can memorize bomb procedures. It is whether three people enjoy communicating under deliberately uneven access to information. If that sounds compelling, the role restrictions are the reason to play; if your group needs everyone to see, hear, and speak freely, they are likely to be the main obstacle.
