Boeing’s board has been substantially refreshed since the 737 MAX crisis. The current roster has 12 directors, with Steven M. Mollenkopf serving as independent chair and Robert K. (Kelly) Ortberg serving as president and CEO. The reset began in March 2024 with a chair succession and a planned CEO departure, then continued with investor Tim Buckley and airline executive Bradley D. Tilden joining the board.

The Boeing Company’s board roster dated February 23, 2026 lists 12 directors. Ortberg is the CEO-director, while Mollenkopf is the independent chair, keeping the two roles separate.

What changed in the 2024 leadership reset?
Independent chair succession
In March 2024, Boeing announced that Larry Kellner would not stand for re-election as chair. Steve Mollenkopf was selected to succeed him as independent board chair. An independent chair can lead board oversight without holding the company’s executive job, a separation that matters when directors are evaluating management, safety controls and succession.

CEO succession
The same March 2024 announcement said CEO Dave Calhoun intended to step down at the end of 2024. The transition put senior-management succession on the board’s agenda alongside the chair change. Robert K. Ortberg is now listed as president and CEO, while Mollenkopf remains independent chair.
Which new directors were added?
Tim Buckley
Tim Buckley, former chair and CEO of Vanguard, was elected to Boeing’s board effective January 1, 2025. His background adds large-investor and capital-markets experience to a board overseeing a global manufacturer, although the cited announcement does not assign him a specific committee in the current roster summary.
Bradley D. Tilden
Boeing elected Bradley D. Tilden on December 3, 2025. Tilden previously chaired and led Alaska Air Group, giving him an airline customer and operator perspective. He joined the Aerospace Safety and Finance committees.

At the time of Tilden’s election, Boeing described him as the board’s 12th member and the 10th new director added since 2019. Board Chair Steve Mollenkopf said Tilden brought “a distinct customer perspective, proven leadership in the airline industry, and more than three decades of aviation experience.”
Why did Boeing refresh the board?
The stated rationale is governance, succession and expertise rather than a published claim that a particular appointment produced a measured improvement. Boeing’s 2026 proxy says the board:
- Oversaw senior-management succession planning.
- Reviewed board composition and director qualifications.
- Continued board refreshment through Tilden’s election.
- Conducted annual evaluations of the full board, each committee and each director.
The Aerospace Safety Committee’s role and Tilden’s assignment to it make aviation safety an explicit board-level responsibility. His airline background is intended to strengthen the customer and operating perspective available to directors. Buckley’s appointment adds experience from a major institutional investor.

Those are intended governance contributions. The official appointment and proxy materials do not publish a causal statistic showing that board refreshment itself improved Boeing’s safety, product quality or financial performance. Such outcomes require separate operational and financial evidence.

What does the 2026 proxy say about the board?
Boeing’s 2026 proxy presented 12 director nominees for election through the 2027 annual meeting. The shareholder vote was the formal checkpoint for electing the full slate. The proxy’s evaluation and qualification disclosures show an ongoing process rather than a one-time post-crisis change: directors and committees are reviewed annually, and the board considers whether its collective skills match Boeing’s needs.

Boeing’s current arrangement separates board leadership from executive management:

- Snap-Together Assembly: Components snap easily into place for quick setup; includes a custom display stand with an engraved plaque for professional presentation.
- Perfect for Collectors and Gifts: Designed for airline enthusiasts, model collectors, and professionals, it’s suitable for home, office, or as a unique gift.
- Independent chair: Steven M. Mollenkopf leads the board and is not the company’s CEO.
- CEO-director: Robert K. Ortberg runs Boeing and serves on the board.
- Board oversight: Independent directors can evaluate management, succession and risk with the chair role held outside the executive position.
Separation does not guarantee a particular safety or financial result, but it defines who is accountable for board leadership and who is accountable for day-to-day management.
