Augments are the better first unlock for most Black Ops 7 Zombies players. They directly modify the Perk-a-Colas, Ammo Mods, and Field Upgrades in your loadout, so their effects carry into ordinary Standard, Directed, and Survival matches. Relics serve a different purpose: they are selected in Cursed Survival to raise difficulty and pursue higher-tier run rewards.
Choose Augments when you want a stronger, more flexible build. Choose Relics when your immediate goal is Cursed difficulty, tier progression, or the rewards tied to surviving those harder runs.
The short answer: two upgrade systems with different jobs
Relics and Augments are not competing versions of the same permanent upgrade. Augments change how an enhancement behaves during a match. Relics are a risk-and-reward layer for Cursed Survival, where selecting them increases the challenge and opens the path to tiered rewards.

What Relics do in BO7 Zombies
Relics are Cursed Survival modifiers
Relics are selected for Cursed Survival on existing round-based Zombies maps. The official Season 02 description is direct: choose the Relics you have unlocked “to increase the difficulty,” then survive as long as possible. That makes a Relic a run parameter, not a replacement for the Perk, Ammo Mod, or Field Upgrade effects in your underlying loadout.
A Relic can therefore make a run more demanding while raising the ceiling of what that run can award. The mode-specific nature matters: the available information does not establish that choosing or unlocking a Relic permanently strengthens your Standard, Directed, or ordinary Survival loadout.
Why players use Relics
- Self-imposed challenge: Add difficulty when a normal round-based run is no longer demanding enough.
- Cursed tier progression: Work toward Tier I, Tier II, or Tier III objectives by surviving with the corresponding Relic level.
- Reward chasing: Pursue the GobbleGum, XP, charm, and upgraded run-parameter rewards associated with Cursed Survival.
- Endgame practice: Test a team’s resource management and emergency response under harsher conditions without assuming that the Relic itself improves the base build.
Published Cursed Survival reward examples
Season 02 materials give these examples:

These are Season 02 published examples from Call of Duty/Treyarch, not a promise that every future season will use identical thresholds or payouts. Seasonal tuning can change Relic requirements, effects, or rewards, so check the current official Cursed Survival announcement before planning a long progression grind.

Augments modify the enhancements in your loadout
Augments are researched modifiers for three enhancement categories: Perk-a-Colas, Ammo Mods, and Field Upgrades. The BO7 launch overview lists 12 Perk-a-Colas, six Ammo Mods, and six Field Upgrades. Each enhancement has its own research diagram, so research is organized around the specific tool you want to improve rather than around a single account-wide bonus.
The practical effect is direct build customization. Depending on the enhancement and the choices you research, an Augment can change coverage, crowd control, Elite-target utility, survivability, healing, armor sustain, or Field Upgrade utility. Those changes apply to the enhancement when you use it in a match.

Official examples of direct combat effects
Season 01 material illustrates the difference between an Augment and a Relic. The Shatter Blast Ammo Mod’s Big Game Augment can allow the effect to activate on Elite enemies. Its Blast Repair Augment restores some armor when Shatter Blast destroys enemy armor. These examples alter what the Ammo Mod does in combat; they do not merely increase a challenge setting.
The examples should not be read as a universal best combination. The right Major and Minor choices depend on your weapon, map route, team role, and whether your problem is Elite pressure, crowds, armor loss, or another constraint.

Research carryover from Black Ops 6
Activision and Treyarch state that Augment research progress from Black Ops 6 continues into Black Ops 7. Returning players therefore may begin BO7 with research already completed on some enhancements, while new players will need to develop those diagrams in BO7. The launch overview also introduces the Overheal mechanic alongside the new Augment choices.
How many Augments can you equip?
For a fully researched enhancement, the official documentation describes eight Augments in its research diagram. After all eight are unlocked, you can research the Extra Slot Minor Augment. That Extra Slot enables a second Minor Augment in-game.
The documented fully researched setup is three active Augments: one Major and two Minor. The Extra Slot is therefore a progression milestone that expands the final configuration; it is not a Relic-style difficulty modifier. The exact active options still depend on the particular Perk-a-Cola, Ammo Mod, or Field Upgrade you researched.

Which system improves your build more?
For direct combat impact, Augments lead
An Augment changes an item you deliberately bring into the match. If your Perk-a-Cola needs more survivability, your Ammo Mod needs better coverage against a dangerous target type, or your Field Upgrade needs more utility, the relevant Augment is aimed at that problem. This is the closest of the two systems to a conventional build upgrade.

It means the system has a direct connection to combat behavior, while Relics primarily change the conditions under which you must survive.
For ordinary-mode use, Augments lead
Relics are documented as Cursed Survival selections. Augments are attached to the enhancements used in your loadout. If most of your time is spent in Standard, Directed, or ordinary Survival, Augment research produces value in the matches you already play.
For difficulty scaling, Relics lead
If the objective is to make a run harder, Relics are the purpose-built system. Selecting a higher Relic tier creates a more demanding Cursed Survival attempt and can unlock access to higher-tier targets and rewards. An Augment cannot substitute for that mode-specific progression.
For reward chasing, Relics lead
The published Tier I, II, and III examples attach XP and other rewards to surviving Cursed runs with the corresponding Relic setup. Augment research is valuable for combat capability, but it is not presented as the route to those Cursed tier rewards.

For experimentation, Augments lead
Research diagrams and the Major/Minor structure let you tune an enhancement to a role. Once an enhancement is fully researched, the Extra Slot supports two Minor Augments alongside one Major. Relics offer a different kind of experimentation: deciding how much risk your team can accept for a particular Cursed reward target.
What should you unlock first?
Start with Augments if your goal is a stronger general build
- Identify the enhancement you use every match. Pick the Perk-a-Cola, Ammo Mod, or Field Upgrade that already anchors your playstyle.
- Define the problem to solve. Decide whether you need more crowd control, Elite-target coverage, armor sustain, healing, or Field Upgrade utility.
- Research the diagram for that enhancement. BO7 provides a separate diagram for each enhancement, so progress is targeted rather than spread across unrelated tools.
- Test the effect in the mode you actually play. Compare how the enhancement handles your normal routes, enemy density, and team role; do not assume that an effect designed for one situation is best everywhere.
- Finish the diagram when the enhancement is a core part of your build. Unlocking all eight Augments opens the Extra Slot Minor Augment and the documented three-Augment configuration.
This path is especially sensible for players who move among Standard, Directed, and Survival, because the researched enhancement remains relevant while you change maps or objectives.
Start with Relics if Cursed Survival is the objective
- Choose the Cursed map and target tier. Decide whether your team is attempting the Tier I, Tier II, or Tier III progression path.
- Select only the unlocked Relics that match the target. Relics increase difficulty, so adding more risk than the reward requires can shorten the run without improving your immediate objective.
- Build conservatively around survival. Bring the Perk-a-Colas, Ammo Mods, and Field Upgrades your team can use reliably; the Relic does not replace those tools.
- Set a round-based checkpoint. The published examples use Round 25 for Tier I, Round 50 for Tier II, and Round 75 for Tier III. Treat those as Season 02 reference targets and verify current requirements.
- Raise the tier only after the team can finish the current one consistently. Cursed progression rewards reliable execution more than a single high-risk attempt that fails early.
Practical build decisions using the documented examples
When Elite enemies are the problem
An Ammo Mod Augment such as Shatter Blast’s Big Game is the relevant type of solution because its documented effect allows activation on Elite enemies. That is a build adjustment aimed at a specific enemy class. A Relic would not provide the same targeted behavior; it would increase the challenge of the Cursed run.
When armor attrition is the problem
Blast Repair is an example of an Augment aimed at sustain: it restores some armor when Shatter Blast destroys enemy armor. If your failures come from repeatedly losing armor during ordinary matches, an effect of this kind is more directly relevant than adding a Relic.
When the team wants a harder event run
If the loadout already performs adequately and the goal is to pursue Cursed rewards, Relics become the meaningful progression choice. Keep the combat enhancements tuned with Augments, then use Relics to set the desired challenge level rather than expecting the Relic to improve the loadout itself.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling Relics permanent upgrades
The available official description defines Relics as selections that increase Cursed difficulty. It does not establish a permanent increase to a Perk-a-Cola, Ammo Mod, Field Upgrade, weapon, or account-wide combat statistic. Describe them as Cursed Survival modifiers unless a later official patch explicitly changes that function.
Expecting an Augment to improve every enhancement at once
Research is organized by enhancement. Completing a Shatter Blast diagram does not automatically complete the diagrams for your Perk-a-Colas or Field Upgrades. Prioritize the tools you actually equip.
Confusing eight researched Augments with eight active choices
The research diagram contains eight Augments for a fully researched enhancement. The documented in-game end state is one Major and two Minor Augments, with the second Minor enabled by Extra Slot. Research count and active-slot count are different.

Tiered Cursed rewards are a reason to enter Cursed Survival, not evidence that a Relic is the best upgrade for every mode. Separate your Cursed challenge plan from your everyday loadout plan.
Assuming launch counts and effects cannot change
BO7 launched with 66 new Augment choices and 192 total Augments, while the launch overview lists 12 Perk-a-Colas, six Ammo Mods, and six Field Upgrades. Those are launch-era figures. Seasonal updates can alter counts, effects, tier requirements, and rewards, so consult the latest official patch or seasonal material when a decision depends on a specific number.
A simple decision rule
- Play mostly Standard, Directed, or ordinary Survival: research Augments first.
- Need a particular combat fix: choose the Augment tied to that Perk-a-Cola, Ammo Mod, or Field Upgrade.
- Chasing Cursed tiers, XP, GobbleGum, charms, or upgraded Cursed parameters: unlock and select Relics.
- Want both long-term power and challenge progression: finish the most important Augment diagram first, then use Relics for dedicated Cursed attempts.
- Unsure which Augment is best: choose based on your failure point and team role; no official source establishes one universal winner for every weapon, map, or composition.
Bottom line
Augments improve a normal BO7 Zombies build more because they directly change the enhancements you use in combat, and their research can culminate in one Major plus two Minor Augments for a fully researched enhancement. Relics are valuable for a different reason: they increase Cursed Survival’s difficulty and connect your run to tiered rewards. Unlock Augments first for general build strength, then pursue Relics when your priority is mastering Cursed Survival.
