Bluey’s Quest for the Gold Pen does not support local co-op or multiplayer. Nintendo lists the Switch version as “Single system (1),” and the publisher, Steam, and Xbox classify the game as single-player. A second controller cannot add another playable character.

The short answer: there is no supported local co-op

The official product listings for Bluey’s Quest for the Gold Pen consistently describe a one-player experience. Nintendo’s US Switch listing specifies “No. of players: Single system (1).” Nintendo Australia lists “Local: 1.” PM Studios labels the title “Single Player,” while the Steam and Xbox listings also identify it as single-player.

That means the game is designed for one person at a time. It does not provide a local co-op option, split-screen mode, alternating two-player mode, or a second-player character. Connecting another Joy-Con, Pro Controller, or gamepad will not create a shared session. The listings available for the console and PC release do not advertise online multiplayer or any other multiplayer feature either.

If your goal is to play simultaneously with another person, this is not a supported co-op purchase. You can still take turns with one controller, but that is a social way of sharing a single-player game rather than a built-in multiplayer mode.

What the official listings say on each platform

The clearest way to settle the question is to compare the player-count fields rather than infer multiplayer support from the game’s family-friendly presentation or the Switch’s controller options.

Platform or listing Player information What it means for co-op
Nintendo Switch (Nintendo US, 2026) “Single system (1)”; TV, tabletop and handheld modes One player on one Switch; no local co-op is indicated.
Nintendo Switch (Nintendo Australia, 2026) “Local: 1”; TV, tabletop and handheld modes Confirms that the local player count is one.
Steam Single-player; release date May 28, 2026 No co-op mode is listed.
Xbox Single player; Xbox Series X|S and PC play No local or online multiplayer mode is listed.
PM Studios title page Explicitly “Single Player”; Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Epic Games and Steam The publisher classifies the product as a solo game.

These listings are consistent with one another. They establish the advertised player count for the release, but they should not be read as a guarantee about every possible future update or every regional storefront. No co-op feature is listed in the official information cited above.

Why Switch TV, tabletop and handheld modes do not mean multiplayer

Nintendo’s Switch page lists three ways to display and control the game:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • TV mode: the Switch sends the game to a television.
  • Tabletop mode: the console stands on its kickstand while you play with a controller.
  • Handheld mode: the screen and controls remain attached to the console.

Those are hardware configurations, not player modes. The same listing keeps the player count at one in all three configurations. Tabletop mode can make it easier for someone else to watch or for family members to take turns, but it does not assign a second controller to a second Bluey character.

This distinction matters because many Switch games use “tabletop” alongside “multiplayer” in their specifications. In this case, tabletop only describes where the screen sits. The number beside “players” is the relevant field for deciding whether two people can play at once.

What kind of game is it?

An original Bluey adventure

Bluey’s Quest for the Gold Pen is a story-driven adventure based on an original story by Bluey creator Joe Brumm. The premise centers on Bluey’s drawings coming to life, turning an imaginative idea into an exploration game rather than a competitive or party-style multiplayer title.

Brumm described the project this way in the official launch announcement: “Bluey has always been about turning small moments into big adventures. Writing Bluey’s Quest for the Gold Pen and seeing the game come to life has been a lot of fun, and I’m excited for families to play and experience the world of Bluey in a way that only imagination can make possible.”

Nine adventure-filled levels

The official announcement says the game contains nine adventure-filled levels. It describes exploration through varied environments, playful puzzles and mini-quests. That structure explains why a single-player classification is not a contradiction of the game’s family focus: the intended experience is one player guiding Bluey through a narrative adventure while others watch, suggest solutions or take turns.

Family-friendly does not equal co-op

“Family-friendly” describes the tone and audience, not the number of supported players. A game can be appropriate for children and parents to enjoy together while still allowing only one active save and one controllable character. The official genre information from PM Studios calls the title an adventure and family-friendly platformer, but it does not add a co-op feature.

How to play the Switch version

If you already own the game or are deciding whether it fits your household, these steps describe the supported setup:

  1. Install or launch the game on the Nintendo Switch.
  2. Choose the active user profile when the console requests one. The game’s listing indicates a single system and one player.
  3. Use the attached Joy-Con, a single pair of detached Joy-Con controllers, or one compatible controller to guide Bluey.
  4. Play through the exploration, puzzles and mini-quests in the current save.
  5. If another person wants to participate, let them watch, offer hints or take the controller when you choose. The game does not provide an in-game second-player join prompt.

Using two physical controllers is unnecessary for the supported setup. The extra controller may remain paired to the console for other games, but pairing it does not change this title’s player count.

What happens if you press a button on a second controller?

In a game with local co-op, a second controller normally triggers a “Press a button to join” prompt, creates another character, or opens a split-screen or shared-camera mode. You should not expect any of those behaviors here. Because the official listings define the game as single-player, the second controller has no advertised player slot to occupy.

There is also no official workaround that turns the game into co-op. Adapter-based controller tricks, unofficial software modifications and console account changes cannot be presented as supported features, and they may cause input conflicts or other problems. The reliable options are to play solo or pass one controller between people.

Can two people share one copy?

Yes, two people can enjoy the game together in a non-simultaneous way. One person can control Bluey while another reads dialogue, helps solve a puzzle, chooses an exploration route or takes over at a natural stopping point. This is especially practical for younger players who benefit from an adult’s assistance.

That arrangement should be understood as cooperative viewing or turn-taking, not local co-op. Progress remains attached to the single-player game session, and the game does not maintain separate simultaneous player characters.

How to decide whether it fits your household

Your goal Fit Why
One child or adult wants a Bluey story adventure Good fit The game is built around solo exploration, puzzles and mini-quests.
A parent wants to help a child solve puzzles Possible through turn-taking One person controls the game while another gives suggestions or swaps the controller.
Two players need separate characters on the same screen Not a fit The official listings specify one player and do not list local co-op.
A family wants an online multiplayer session Not advertised The cited Nintendo, PM Studios, Steam and Xbox information contains no online multiplayer listing.
A buyer is choosing between mobile and console Check the current storefront Mobile launched earlier with an announced free-to-start, one-off unlock model; console and PC versions were listed for May 28, 2026.

Common misunderstandings about “multiplayer”

  • “The Switch supports two controllers, so this game must support two players.” Console capability and an individual game’s player count are separate specifications.
  • “Tabletop mode means two people can play.” Tabletop describes the screen position. Nintendo still lists one local player.
  • “Family-friendly means co-op.” The label describes content and audience; PM Studios still classifies this title as single-player.
  • “A second Joy-Con should work if it is paired correctly.” Pairing makes a controller available to the console, not to a game that has no second-player mode.
  • “Mobile and console versions may have different player counts.” Platform features can vary, but the official information available for this title does not advertise multiplayer for the console, PC or announced mobile release.

What to check before buying

Open the exact regional store page for the platform you intend to use and look for its player-count field. For the Switch edition, the decisive wording is “Single system (1)” in Nintendo’s US listing or “Local: 1” in Nintendo Australia’s listing. On PC and Xbox, look for the single-player classification. Also confirm the edition and current price, particularly on mobile, where the original announcement’s free-access and one-off-unlock description may not reflect later regional terms.

Do not buy an extra controller as a solution to the multiplayer question. A second controller can be useful for other games, but it does not add a playable partner to Bluey’s Quest for the Gold Pen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line for families looking for co-op

Bluey’s Quest for the Gold Pen is a solo adventure, not a local multiplayer game. Its Switch display modes change how you view and hold the console, while the official player-count fields remain fixed at one. The best shared experience is to watch, help with puzzles and take turns; simultaneous two-player play is not an advertised feature.
