If a Bluetooth accessory works with other phones but not yours, test both sides before assuming the phone is broken: try that accessory with another device, then connect your phone to a different Bluetooth accessory. The results help narrow the cause, but they do not prove a hardware fault. Work through the checks below in order, starting with the exact kind of failure.
First identify what is failing
“Bluetooth problem” can mean several different things, and each points to a different check. Note whether your phone cannot find the accessory, refuses to pair, pairs but disconnects, or connects while a feature such as music or calls does not work.
- Not visible: check that the accessory is powered and in discovery or pairing mode.
- Pairing rejected: clear stale pairing records on the phone and, where applicable, the accessory.
- Disconnects: begin with charge, proximity, and restarting both devices.
- Only calls or media fail: check compatibility and the relevant audio setting rather than repeating pairing steps.
Use a cross-test to narrow down the cause
Try the same accessory with another phone or computer, then try your phone with another Bluetooth device that is known to work. Fairphone recommends both comparisons in its Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance.

- If your phone fails with several working accessories, focus on phone settings or software and consider contacting the phone maker if the basic checks do not help.
A cross-test is a clue, not a diagnosis: a phone that fails with multiple accessories may still have a settings or software issue rather than defective hardware.

Try the low-risk connection checks
- Bring the devices close together. Keep the phone and accessory near each other while troubleshooting; range varies by device and surroundings.
- Check power and discovery mode. Charge or power on the accessory, and put it into the pairing or discovery mode described in its manual. Being switched on does not always make an accessory discoverable.
- Toggle Bluetooth. Turn Bluetooth off and back on in the phone’s settings.
- Restart both devices. Restart the phone and power-cycle the accessory, then try again.
- Check app access if pairing depends on an app. On iPhone or iPad, allow Bluetooth access for the accessory’s companion app if it needs it. Samsung also advises checking whether an accessory requires a support app and whether permissions or restrictions prevent it from working.
Apple’s iPhone and iPad Bluetooth guidance covers charge, distance, discovery mode, and app permission. Samsung’s Galaxy Bluetooth troubleshooting page includes app and settings checks.
Forget the old pairing and pair again
A saved connection can become stale. Remove the accessory from the phone’s saved Bluetooth devices, put the accessory back into pairing mode, and pair it again. On iPhone or iPad, Apple also advises unpairing the accessory from other devices when it pairs elsewhere but not with the Apple device, then trying again.

For a car, check both ends: the phone may retain the car while the car retains old phone entries. Google recommends clearing old phone entries in the car and following its manual for which device should start pairing. Menu names differ by phone and operating-system version; use the device maker’s instructions if the labels do not match.
Google’s Android Bluetooth troubleshooting steps note that some instructions apply only to Android 8.0 or later, and customized Android versions may use different menus.

- What Can I do if the Bluetooth adapter can not work?: Ensure there are no other Bluetooth devices installed on the computer. If there are, disable all existing Bluetooth devices in "Device Manager", then insert the adapter and try again. (For detailed information please read the user manual)
Check compatibility and partial audio failures
Bluetooth compatibility is not simply a matter of both devices having Bluetooth. An accessory may support some functions but not others, or it may require a particular Bluetooth feature, phone capability, app, or system version. Xiaomi notes, for example, that a headset can support calls without supporting music, while input devices such as mice, keyboards, and controllers can depend on HID support or specific system requirements. Check the exact accessory’s compatibility information with its manufacturer.
When an Android accessory pairs but audio does not work
Open the paired device’s settings and check the separate Media audio and Phone audio controls. Turn on the one that matches the missing function: media for music or other playback, phone audio for calls. The wording and menu path vary by Android version and manufacturer. Also check whether another paired device is currently handling the sound. Google’s Android guidance notes that not all cars support making or receiving phone calls over Bluetooth.

Update software before trying disruptive resets
Install available software updates for the phone, and check whether the accessory has a firmware update. If an accessory is the only device that fails, its manufacturer can confirm compatibility and provide model-specific pairing or firmware steps.

Samsung lists resetting Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings and trying Safe mode as later troubleshooting options. Safe mode can help identify whether a downloaded app is interfering. A network reset removes saved Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections, so expect to set those connections up again afterward. Follow instructions for your exact phone model before resetting settings.

When to contact support
- Contact the accessory maker if the accessory also fails with other phones or computers, or if you need its exact pairing, firmware, or compatibility instructions.
- Contact the phone maker if Bluetooth cannot be enabled or if the phone continues to fail with multiple known-working accessories after the basic checks and updates.
- Keep factory reset as a last resort. It is disruptive and erases phone data. Back up first, and use only the model-specific instructions from the phone maker; it is not a sensible first test for one Bluetooth accessory.
Without the phone model, operating-system version, accessory, and precise symptom, there is no reliable basis to identify a particular defect or prescribe a model-specific menu path.
