For most tablet users, Bluetooth is the better starting point. It pairs directly in the tablet’s Bluetooth settings, leaves the USB port available for charging or other accessories, and avoids carrying a receiver. A 2.4 GHz setup can be the better choice when you already own a compatible receiver-based keyboard or mouse, or when a particular product’s receiver mode suits your work, but it requires USB support and often an adapter. The tablet model, operating system, peripheral and connection mode must all match; neither standard is universally faster, more reliable or more energy-efficient.

Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz are different connection methods

The labels describe two ways a keyboard or mouse communicates with the tablet, not simply two competing radio frequencies.

Bluetooth pairs directly with the tablet

A Bluetooth keyboard or mouse contains its own radio and connects through the tablet’s Bluetooth settings. There is no separate USB receiver to lose or plug in. That makes Bluetooth particularly convenient for a tablet that has one USB-C port, a proprietary connector, or no convenient way to attach a full-size USB accessory.

Bluetooth does not mean that every keyboard or mouse will work with every tablet. The accessory must support the tablet’s operating system, and some models expose only basic keys, buttons or pointer functions. Multi-device products may also have separate pairing slots, switching buttons and host limits that differ by model.

2.4 GHz normally uses a USB receiver

In the keyboard and mouse examples documented for this comparison, 2.4 GHz means a proprietary receiver-based link. The receiver is a USB peripheral: a small USB-A or USB-C device plugs into the tablet, and the keyboard or mouse communicates with that receiver. A tablet with USB-C may therefore need a USB-C-to-USB-A OTG adapter when the supplied receiver has a USB-A plug.

Having Wi-Fi or Bluetooth on a tablet does not make a 2.4 GHz receiver automatically compatible. The tablet must recognize USB input devices, support the relevant OTG path, accept the receiver’s operating system, and have a physically compatible connector or data adapter.

A frequency listing is not proof of a receiver

Specifications can be misleading if you read only the frequency line. Microsoft’s Bluetooth Desktop for business lists a 2.4 GHz frequency range, but its interface section identifies Bluetooth Low Energy as the connection. That listing does not establish a separate 2.4 GHz USB dongle. Look for an explicit statement such as “USB receiver,” “RF receiver” or “dongle” before assuming a device has a receiver-based mode.

Quick decision guide

Your situation Best starting point Checks to make
You want the simplest portable setup and the tablet has Bluetooth Bluetooth Confirm the keyboard or mouse supports the tablet’s operating system, then follow its pairing and multi-device instructions.
You already own a 2.4 GHz keyboard or mouse Use its receiver if the tablet supports it Check the receiver plug, USB/OTG support, exact operating-system compatibility and whether a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter is required.
You use both a tablet and a computer A dual-mode product Verify that Bluetooth and receiver modes each support your devices; a product’s compatibility list can differ by mode.
You use an iPad mouse or trackpad Bluetooth is the documented route Apple specifies iPadOS 13.4 or later on supported iPad models. Confirm the exact iPad model and installed version.
Several Bluetooth accessories are active and performance is inconsistent Troubleshoot the current setup first Reduce unnecessary active Bluetooth devices and test again before changing standards.

Compatibility is the first question, not speed

Connection standards matter only after the tablet and peripheral can communicate. Check these four items before comparing latency or battery claims.

1. Tablet model and operating system

Operating-system support is version-specific. Apple’s support page published May 8, 2026, says, “Connecting a Bluetooth accessory to your iPad requires iPadOS 13.4 or later.” The supported families listed there include every iPad Pro model, iPad Air 2 or later, iPad (5th generation) or later, and iPad mini 4 or later among models that support iPadOS 13 and later. An older iPad, or one that cannot update to the required version, may not provide the same mouse or trackpad support.

Android compatibility is likewise model- and product-dependent. A keyboard datasheet may list Android 7 or later, while another manufacturer’s Bluetooth compatibility table may require Android 8 or later. Treat those numbers as requirements for the named product, not as a universal Android rule.

2. Connection-mode compatibility

A dual-mode label means that one product offers two paths; it does not guarantee that both paths work with every host. A manufacturer may list iPadOS and Android under Bluetooth while listing only Windows, macOS, Linux or Chrome OS for its USB receiver. Read the Bluetooth and receiver rows separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Connector and OTG support

Identify the receiver’s physical connector before buying an adapter. A USB-A receiver needs a USB-C-to-USB-A OTG adapter on many modern tablets. The tablet and adapter must carry USB data, not merely provide charging. If the tablet lacks USB host or OTG support, an adapter cannot make a receiver usable.

4. Peripheral features

Basic typing and pointing are more portable than specialized functions. Media keys, gesture controls, programmable buttons, lighting controls and configuration software may be limited on iPadOS or Android even when the keyboard or mouse connects successfully. A product page that says “compatible” may refer to basic input rather than every feature.

How to connect a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse

  1. Charge or install batteries. Turn the keyboard or mouse on and keep it close to the tablet.
  2. Enter pairing mode. Hold the product’s Bluetooth or connect button until its indicator shows discovery mode. On a multi-device model, select an unused host slot first.
  3. Open the tablet’s Bluetooth settings. On an iPad, use Settings > Bluetooth and leave Bluetooth enabled.
  4. Select the accessory. Tap its name under Other Devices on the iPad, or select it from the tablet’s available-device list. Enter a displayed PIN or press the requested key sequence if the tablet asks for confirmation.
  5. Test the actual functions you need. Type in a text field, move the pointer, click both buttons and try any special keys that matter to you.
  6. Record the host slot. If the accessory supports several devices, note which key or button returns it to the tablet. Switching to a computer later may require pressing that host key and waiting for reconnection.

If the accessory appears under a previous tablet or computer, disconnect it there or remove the old pairing before trying again. Some keyboards and mice accept only one active Bluetooth host at a time; others retain several pairings but connect to only the selected slot.

How to connect a 2.4 GHz receiver

  1. Locate the receiver. It may be stored in the mouse battery compartment, packed separately, or already inserted in the keyboard’s case. Confirm whether its plug is USB-A or USB-C.
  2. Check tablet support. Confirm that the tablet supports USB host or OTG input and that the product documentation lists the tablet’s operating system or HID support.
  3. Add the correct adapter if necessary. For a USB-A receiver and USB-C tablet, use a USB-C-to-USB-A OTG adapter with data support. Keep the adapter attached to the receiver if you travel frequently.
  4. Insert the receiver. Plug it directly into the tablet or into the adapter, then power on the keyboard or mouse. Most receiver-based HID devices do not require a companion app for basic input.
  5. Test typing or pointing. Open a text field or move the pointer. If nothing happens, remove and reinsert the receiver, verify the adapter orientation and check the tablet’s USB/OTG setting if its manufacturer provides one.
  6. Store the parts together. The receiver is required for this mode; the keyboard or mouse cannot use the receiver-based link if it is misplaced.

Xiaomi’s support instructions for the Xiaomi Dual-mode Wireless Mouse 2 and POCO Pad illustrate this arrangement: Bluetooth mode pairs through the Pad’s Bluetooth function, while receiver mode uses the mouse’s USB-A receiver and an A-to-C adapter. The same steps should not be assumed for another tablet or another mouse without checking its documentation.

Bluetooth versus 2.4 GHz: practical trade-offs

Factor Bluetooth 2.4 GHz receiver
Tablet port usage Uses no USB port for the connection. Consumes a USB port and may require an OTG adapter.
Initial setup Pair in the tablet’s Bluetooth settings. Attach the receiver, adapter if needed, and power the peripheral.
Portability Fewer separate parts; the tablet and peripheral can travel without a dongle. Requires carrying and protecting the receiver and any adapter.
Multiple hosts Many products offer several Bluetooth slots, but the number and switching method vary. Some products switch between a receiver and Bluetooth; a receiver normally serves one host at a time.
Compatibility evidence Often listed for iPadOS and Android, subject to model and version. Must be listed as USB/OTG or receiver-compatible for the tablet.
Latency and interference Can be affected by the tablet’s wireless environment; no universal performance ranking is established. Some manufacturers claim advantages for a specific receiver, but those claims do not establish a standard-wide result.
Battery life Depends on the exact peripheral, firmware and use. Also depends on the exact peripheral; no matched independent comparison establishes a universal winner.
Software features Basic input is generally the most portable; advanced controls may need supported software. Receiver software support can be restricted to desktop operating systems.

What the documented product examples actually show

Manhattan Ultra Slim Dual-Mode Wireless Keyboard, SKU 180566

Manhattan’s datasheet describes two Bluetooth connections plus a 2.4 GHz USB-A micro receiver, with switching between connected devices. Its overview lists Android, iOS, iPadOS, Windows, macOS, Chrome OS and Linux. The Bluetooth requirements specify iPadOS 13.4 or later and Android 7 or later. The datasheet also gives an effective range of up to 10 m (33 ft.) and battery life of up to 1.5 years. Those figures are Manhattan’s product claims, not averages for Bluetooth or 2.4 GHz keyboards, and the document does not establish that the same requirements apply identically to every connection mode.

Xiaomi Dual-mode Wireless Mouse 2 with POCO Pad

Xiaomi UK Support states that the Xiaomi Dual-mode Wireless Mouse 2 is compatible with the POCO Pad. The page explains that the Pad’s Android-based HyperOS supports HID and can recognize the mouse through OTG. Bluetooth connects directly, while the USB-A receiver requires an A-to-C adapter. Xiaomi describes this particular receiver mode as offering lower latency and stronger interference resistance. That is a manufacturer statement about this mouse-and-tablet combination, not independent evidence that every 2.4 GHz mouse is faster or more resistant to interference than Bluetooth.

Logitech Logi Bolt products

Logitech documents two options for Logi Bolt keyboards and mice: a paired Logi Bolt USB receiver or direct Bluetooth Low Energy. In the compatibility table, receiver support is listed for Windows, macOS, Linux and Chrome OS, while Bluetooth support additionally lists iPadOS 14 or later and Android 8 or later. Logitech says basic functions work without software outside Windows and macOS. This example shows why a product can support a tablet over Bluetooth while excluding that same tablet from its receiver list. Verify the exact model rather than relying on the Logi Bolt name alone.

Microsoft Bluetooth Desktop for business

Microsoft lists Bluetooth Low Energy as the interface for this keyboard-and-mouse set and says iOS/macOS and Android devices are compatible with limited features. Its separate “2.4 GHz frequency range” wording describes radio characteristics; it does not turn the set into a USB-receiver product. This is a useful specification-reading test for any peripheral.

When Bluetooth is the sensible choice

You want a clean travel setup

Choose Bluetooth when the tablet already supports it and you do not want an adapter, receiver or occupied USB port. This is especially useful when that port is needed for charging, external storage or a display accessory.

You switch between a tablet and several hosts

A multi-device Bluetooth keyboard or mouse can save a receiver swap when it provides separate host slots. Check how many devices it remembers, whether switching is a dedicated key, and whether your tablet’s operating system appears in the product’s Bluetooth list.

You use an iPad

Bluetooth is the documented iPad mouse and trackpad route once the iPad meets Apple’s iPadOS and model requirements. A receiver can work only if the exact iPad, adapter and peripheral support the necessary USB path; do not infer that support from the presence of a USB-C connector alone.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

When a 2.4 GHz receiver is worth considering

You already own the peripheral

Reusing an existing receiver-based keyboard or mouse can be practical if the tablet accepts USB HID input and the receiver is supported. Check the connector and adapter before assuming the setup will work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You need a product’s alternate path

A dual-mode peripheral can provide Bluetooth for the tablet and a receiver for a computer, or give you a second connection method if one path becomes unavailable. Confirm that the receiver can physically attach to the tablet and that both modes appear in the documentation.

The manufacturer makes a device-specific performance claim

A receiver may be attractive when its maker documents a benefit for a named product, as Xiaomi does for the Dual-mode Wireless Mouse 2 on the POCO Pad. Treat that as a reason to evaluate that combination, not as proof of a general 2.4 GHz advantage. There is no matched independent study in the cited material that ranks the two standards for latency, reliability or battery life across products.

Interference, latency and battery: how to interpret claims

Wireless behavior depends on the tablet, nearby radios, distance, firmware, power-saving settings and the peripheral’s design. A broad claim that one standard is always faster, more stable or longer-lasting goes beyond the available evidence.

Apple specifically warns about Bluetooth mouse and trackpad performance on some iPads: “The more Bluetooth accessories that are connected to your iPad and active, the more likely you are to experience wireless performance issues.” That is an iPad troubleshooting caution, not a finding that Bluetooth universally underperforms. Disconnect idle accessories and retest before changing connection types.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, a quoted range or battery figure belongs to the product and test conditions that produced it. Manhattan’s “up to 10 m (33 ft.)” range and “up to 1.5 years” battery claim should be read as limits in its datasheet, not as expected results for every keyboard or mouse. Battery life can change with backlighting, polling behavior, sleep settings and daily usage.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The Bluetooth accessory does not appear

  • Confirm that it is charged, switched on and actually in pairing mode rather than merely powered.
  • Move it close to the tablet and turn Bluetooth off and on from the tablet’s settings.
  • Remove an old pairing if the accessory is already connected to another host or has reached its pairing limit.
  • Check the product’s required iPadOS or Android version and whether your tablet model is on the supported list.

The tablet sees the Bluetooth device, but typing or pointing is limited

  • Test basic keys or buttons first; advanced shortcuts, gestures, lighting and programmable controls may require desktop software or may not be implemented on the tablet.
  • Read the product’s tablet-specific feature list instead of assuming that “compatible” means every function.
  • For an iPad mouse or trackpad, verify that the iPad meets Apple’s iPadOS 13.4-or-later requirement.

The 2.4 GHz receiver is not recognized

  • Verify that you inserted the receiver, not a charging cable or storage cap.
  • Check whether the receiver is USB-A or USB-C and use the correct data-capable OTG adapter.
  • Confirm USB host/OTG support and the exact operating-system compatibility for the peripheral.
  • Remove and reconnect the receiver, then power-cycle the keyboard or mouse.
  • If Bluetooth works but the receiver does not, treat that as a mode-specific compatibility issue; it is not proof that the entire product is defective.

The connection drops or feels inconsistent

  • On an iPad, disconnect unused active Bluetooth accessories and test again, following Apple’s interference guidance.
  • For a receiver, reseat the adapter and keep the receiver away from physical obstructions where practical.
  • Check battery level and sleep behavior on the keyboard or mouse.
  • Test the same peripheral in its other connection mode only if the tablet and product documentation support that mode.

A buying checklist for tablet keyboards and mice

  1. Write down the exact tablet model and operating-system version. “Android tablet” and “iPad” are too broad for a reliable compatibility decision.
  2. Choose the connection you can actually support. Bluetooth needs tablet Bluetooth and a supported OS; 2.4 GHz needs a supported USB receiver path, connector and adapter.
  3. Read mode-specific compatibility tables. A dual-mode product may list different hosts for Bluetooth and receiver operation.
  4. Check the feature requirement. Decide whether you need only typing and pointing or also media keys, gestures, shortcuts, programmable buttons and configuration software.
  5. Confirm what is included. For receiver products, verify that the dongle is in the package and identify its connector. For Bluetooth products, check whether a charging cable, batteries or a multi-device switch is supplied.
  6. Interpret performance numbers narrowly. Treat range, battery and latency statements as claims for the named product, conditions and mode.
  7. Plan for travel. If you choose a receiver, store it with the peripheral and carry the required OTG adapter. If you choose Bluetooth, document the pairing slot or switching sequence for your tablet.

Bottom line

Start with Bluetooth if your priority is a simple, portable tablet setup that preserves the USB port. Choose a 2.4 GHz receiver when you already have a supported device, need a receiver-based option, or have verified a specific tablet-and-peripheral combination. Dual-mode hardware offers flexibility, but only after you check each mode separately. The reliable decision is the one that matches your exact tablet, operating system, connector, adapter and required features—not a blanket claim about one wireless standard.
