For most Windows 11 PCs, Bluetooth 5.4 is not automatically more useful than Bluetooth 5.3. Windows 11 version 22H2 and later include support for Bluetooth Core Specification 5.3, but the radio hardware, firmware, drivers and connected accessory determine the features you actually get. A Bluetooth 5.4 label alone does not guarantee LE Audio, LC3, Auracast, longer range or lower latency.

If your existing Bluetooth 5.3 connection is stable and supports the headset, keyboard, controller or other device you need, upgrading solely to 5.4 is unlikely to produce a visible benefit. Consider a Bluetooth 5.4 USB adapter when your PC has no Bluetooth, its built-in radio lacks a required capability, or the manufacturer explicitly documents support for a feature you need.

Bluetooth 5.4 versus 5.3 at a glance

Bluetooth Core version numbers describe the highest Bluetooth specification a controller and its software fully implement. They are useful identifiers, but they are not complete feature lists. Windows may expose a radio that is capable of a newer specification while its driver does not provide every optional profile or audio path, and an accessory can advertise a newer version while still operating with an older feature set when paired with another device.

Question Bluetooth 5.3 Bluetooth 5.4
Windows 11 baseline Windows 11 version 22H2, all editions, document in-box support for Core 5.3. Not a universal Windows 11 baseline; availability depends on the installed radio, firmware and driver.
Windows Link Manager Protocol (LMP) LMP 12 maps to Core 5.3. LMP 13 maps to Core 5.4.
What the number proves The highest core specification the Windows device fully supports when the radio reports LMP 12. The highest core specification the Windows device fully supports when the radio reports LMP 13.
LE Audio, LC3 or Auracast Not guaranteed by the version number. Not guaranteed by the version number.
Upgrade value Usually sufficient when your current devices work and the required profiles are available. Useful mainly when a documented hardware, driver or accessory requirement calls for it.

Microsoft describes the LMP value as “the highest core specification that the Windows device fully supports.” That wording matters: it refers to the complete support level reported by the Windows device, not merely the version printed on a USB adapter’s packaging.

Why the core-version label is only one part of compatibility

A Windows 11 Bluetooth connection has several layers. A failure or missing feature at any one layer can determine the result even when both products carry a 5.4 badge.

Host support: Windows, radio and driver

The PC needs a Windows version that supports the relevant profile, a Bluetooth controller with the required capability, and a driver that exposes it to Windows. Windows 11 version 22H2 is the documented baseline for Core 5.3. Newer core support is supplied by the particular radio and its software rather than by the operating-system label alone.

Device Manager may show several Bluetooth entries. The entry that matters for version identification is the physical radio, such as an Intel Wireless Bluetooth or Realtek Bluetooth Adapter listing. “Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator” entries are Windows software components and do not identify the radio’s Core version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Application support: profiles and audio paths

Bluetooth Core support covers the controller and protocol foundation. Applications still depend on profiles and codecs. Classic Audio and LE Audio use different paths, and a Windows installation can support one without exposing the other for a particular radio and driver combination.

Accessory support: the headset or peripheral matters too

A headset, earbuds, keyboard or controller must support the feature you want. For audio, the product may support Classic Audio only, LE Audio only, or both. Bluetooth SIG states that products can support both modes, but compatibility is product-specific; check the accessory manufacturer’s specification rather than inferring capability from its Bluetooth version.

Upgrade cost and effort

Replacing a working 5.3 radio with a 5.4 adapter adds a device, a driver and another possible source of interference. It is sensible when the existing radio is absent, unreliable or missing a documented capability. It is not a guaranteed performance upgrade for ordinary pairing, music playback or input devices.

Does Bluetooth 5.4 provide LE Audio, LC3 or Auracast?

No. Bluetooth 5.4 does not automatically enable any of those features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bluetooth SIG’s LE Audio FAQ says that LE Audio relies on LE Isochronous Channels, a core feature introduced in Bluetooth Core Specification 5.2. Therefore, the difference between 5.3 and 5.4 alone cannot answer whether LE Audio will work. A device with a 5.3 radio can support LE Audio if its controller, firmware, Windows driver, codec path and accessory are all compatible; a 5.4 device can fail to expose LE Audio if one of those pieces is missing.

Windows requirements for LE Audio

Microsoft lists all of the following requirements for LE Audio on Windows:

  • Windows 11 version 22H2 or newer.
  • Compatible Bluetooth Low Energy hardware in the PC.
  • A compatible audio codec, including the codec path required by the implementation.
  • Manufacturer-provided LE Audio drivers for the Bluetooth LE radio and audio codec.
  • A headset or earbuds product that also supports LE Audio.

LC3 is the codec used by the LE Audio path, but its presence in a product description does not prove that Windows can use it. The PC driver and the accessory must negotiate a supported path.

Use Windows’ own LE Audio check

Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices. Look for the Use LE Audio when available setting. Microsoft says that if this setting is absent, the PC does not currently support LE Audio; the cause may be hardware or driver limitations. The setting is a practical Windows check, but the connected headset still needs LE Audio support.

Why vendor drivers matter

Microsoft’s technical driver documentation describes a vendor-specific audio driver stack, the Windows Bluetooth LE Audio profile, a Bluetooth controller and the LC3 codec. As of Core 5.3, Microsoft noted that there was no standard host-controller interface for host platforms to send and receive isochronous data. That is why a vendor-specific Windows audio path can be decisive even when the radio’s core version appears sufficient.

How to check your Windows 11 Bluetooth version

You can identify the radio and its LMP value without relying on the adapter’s retail label.

  1. Press Windows key + X and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Bluetooth.
  3. Select the physical wireless radio, not a Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator entry. The name commonly includes the radio manufacturer and “Bluetooth.”
  4. Right-click the radio, choose Properties, and open the Advanced tab if it is available.
  5. Find the LMP value. Microsoft maps LMP 12 to Bluetooth Core 5.3 and LMP 13 to Bluetooth Core 5.4.

If the Advanced tab or LMP value is not shown, the driver may not expose it. Update the radio driver from the PC, motherboard or adapter manufacturer, then check again. Do not use the presence of a Microsoft enumerator as evidence of a particular Core version.

Check the feature you actually need

After identifying the radio, verify the capability that motivated the upgrade. For LE Audio, use the Settings path above. For a peripheral profile, consult the accessory’s specifications and Windows’ pairing behavior. A version number without the relevant profile or codec information is incomplete evidence.

Should you buy a Bluetooth 5.4 USB adapter?

A USB adapter is a practical way to add Bluetooth to a desktop or replace a laptop radio that lacks a needed feature. It is not automatically an improvement over a functioning 5.3 radio.

Your situation Most sensible action Why
Desktop has no Bluetooth Add a USB adapter with Windows 11 drivers. You need a radio before any Bluetooth profile can work.
Built-in radio is unstable or unavailable Test a supported USB adapter, and avoid running two active radios if they conflict. A replacement radio can isolate hardware or driver problems.
Current 5.3 radio works and your accessories work Keep it. Core 5.4 alone does not promise a visible gain.
You specifically need LE Audio Choose an adapter whose manufacturer explicitly documents LE Audio, then verify the Windows setting and the headset specification. LE Audio depends on hardware, codec, driver and accessory support.
You want a newer printed version only Do not upgrade solely for the number. The label does not establish range, latency, battery life or profile support.

What to verify in an adapter listing

  • Exact chipset: the chipset determines which controller capabilities and Windows drivers are available.
  • Windows 11 driver support: confirm the supported Windows editions and whether drivers are supplied by the manufacturer.
  • Explicit LE Audio statement: do not infer LE Audio, LC3 or Auracast from “Bluetooth 5.4” alone.
  • Profile support: check the profiles needed by your headset, game controller, keyboard or other device.
  • Driver delivery: determine whether Windows Update, a downloadable package or an included installer supplies the driver.
  • Physical placement: a short USB extension can move the adapter away from a metal desktop chassis and nearby USB 3 devices that may create interference.

Retail listings often use “5.4” as a headline specification while omitting the chipset or audio implementation. Treat an omitted capability as unverified, not as a yes.

Basic installation sequence

  1. Install the adapter manufacturer’s Windows 11 driver if Windows does not install a suitable one automatically.
  2. Restart Windows when the installer requests it.
  3. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices and turn Bluetooth on.
  4. Pair the accessory again if it was previously paired with a different radio. Remove an obsolete pairing only when Windows repeatedly selects the wrong device.
  5. For LE Audio, return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices and check whether Use LE Audio when available appears.

On a desktop with an existing motherboard radio, disable the old radio in Device Manager only after confirming the USB adapter works. Keeping both active can make troubleshooting harder because Windows may pair an accessory through either controller.

Troubleshooting common Windows 11 Bluetooth-version problems

The adapter appears, but the LMP value is missing

Confirm that you selected the physical radio and not an enumerator entry. If the correct device still has no Advanced tab, install the manufacturer’s driver. A generic driver may provide basic pairing while hiding vendor-specific information or features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows pairs the headset but there is no LE Audio option

Check the Windows version, update the radio and audio drivers, and confirm that the headset supports LE Audio. If the setting remains absent, Microsoft’s guidance indicates that the current hardware or driver combination does not support LE Audio. A 5.4 label on either product does not override that result.

The headset connects only in Classic Audio mode

Verify that both the headset and PC support LE Audio, then check the codec and manufacturer driver requirements. Some products support both Classic Audio and LE Audio but select Classic Audio when the other side lacks a compatible LE path. Re-pairing after a driver change can force Windows to rediscover the available profiles.

A 5.4 adapter works for one device but not another

Bluetooth compatibility is profile-specific. A controller may pair successfully while an LE Audio headset does not, or a keyboard may work while a device requiring a particular codec does not. Check the failing accessory’s supported profiles and the adapter’s documented support instead of treating the successful pairing as proof that every feature is available.

Two radios cause intermittent connections

Windows can have a built-in radio and a USB radio present at the same time. Move the USB adapter to a clear port, update both drivers, and, for a controlled test, disable one radio temporarily in Device Manager. Re-enable it if the adapter is not the intended long-term solution.

What Bluetooth 5.4 does not promise

No authoritative Windows 11 comparison establishes a universal 5.4 advantage in range, latency, throughput, battery life or connection stability over 5.3. Those outcomes depend on antenna design, transmit power, interference, firmware, drivers, codec choice, accessory implementation and the physical environment.

Likewise, the Core version does not tell you whether a product supports every optional profile. A headset can use Bluetooth 5.4 for its controller while exposing only Classic Audio to Windows. Conversely, a well-supported 5.3 implementation can provide the LE Audio features a user needs.

Bluetooth Core 5.4 timing and Windows support

Bluetooth SIG records that the amended Bluetooth Core Specification 5.4 was amended on June 11, 2024, and became effective July 1, 2024. Those dates describe the specification’s publication status; they do not mean that every Windows 11 installation, radio or driver implements all 5.4 capabilities.

Microsoft’s documented Windows 11 version 22H2 baseline remains Core 5.3. A PC can report LMP 13 and therefore identify itself as fully supporting Core 5.4, but the practical feature set still depends on the installed driver and the accessory at the other end.

A decision checklist for Windows 11 buyers

  1. Identify the radio: use Device Manager and select the physical Bluetooth adapter.
  2. Read the LMP: LMP 12 corresponds to Core 5.3; LMP 13 corresponds to Core 5.4.
  3. Name the required feature: LE Audio, a particular profile, a codec or simply basic pairing.
  4. Check Windows support: confirm Windows 11 22H2 or newer and install the manufacturer’s radio and audio drivers.
  5. Check the accessory: verify that the headset or peripheral explicitly supports the same feature.
  6. Choose an adapter only when it solves a gap: verify chipset, Windows 11 drivers and explicit feature claims before buying.
  7. Test the result in Windows: for LE Audio, look for Use LE Audio when available under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices.

The practical answer is therefore feature-first: keep a stable Bluetooth 5.3 setup when it already meets your needs, and choose a Bluetooth 5.4 USB adapter only when its documented hardware and driver support addresses a specific limitation.
