Choose Threads for the best chance of broad discovery, Bluesky for portable identity and highly configurable feeds, and Mastodon for a community governed by a server you select. None is universally best. The right choice depends on the audience you need to reach, how much control you want over ranking and moderation, and whether you value moving your account between hosting providers.
Threads is part of Meta’s wider social ecosystem. Bluesky is built around the open AT Protocol. Mastodon is a federation of independently operated servers. Those structural differences matter more than headline user totals.
Quick answer: which platform fits which priority?
| Your priority | Best-supported fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Potential reach and discovery beyond the app | Threads | Meta reported 500 million monthly active users in June 2026, and eligible posts may be recommended on Instagram and Facebook. Neither fact guarantees reach for an individual account. |
| Choosing feeds and keeping your identity portable | Bluesky | Bluesky describes selectable algorithmic feeds and account moves between hosting providers while retaining your username, friends and posts. |
| Joining a community with local governance | Mastodon | You choose a server run by an independent person or organization. Its rules, moderation and culture are specific to that server. |
| Detailed built-in audience measurement | Threads | Meta documents Insights for views, interactions, follower demographics, geography and discovery. |
| Minimizing surprises when leaving a server | Bluesky, with an important comparison to Mastodon | Bluesky describes moving hosting without losing core identity and content. Mastodon supports migration, but posts do not transfer and several data categories require separate export and import. |
These are practical recommendations from each service’s documented design, not the result of an independent head-to-head study. No reliable study establishes one platform as objectively safest, most engaging or largest for every type of user.
How the three networks are built
Threads: a Meta app with adjacent-network discovery
Threads is a centrally operated service connected to Meta’s broader audience ecosystem. In its March 20, 2025 feature announcement, Meta described follower-only replies, reply approvals, reply filters, custom feeds, topic discovery, quote-post controls and creator Insights. Meta also said eligible Threads posts could be recommended to people on Instagram and Facebook. Eligibility is not a promise that a particular post will be distributed.

Meta announced on June 16, 2026 that Threads had reached 500 million monthly active users. That is Meta’s own figure and a monthly-active measure; it is not directly comparable with Bluesky’s user count or Mastodon’s directory estimate.
Bluesky: an open protocol with selectable feeds
Bluesky runs on the AT Protocol, which it describes as an open-source framework standardizing identity, follows and data for social applications. Bluesky says a user can change hosting providers while keeping their username, friends and posts. The service also separates feed choice from the default ranking system: its FAQ says users can select from more than 40,000 algorithmic feeds, a platform-published count accessed October 9, 2026.
That architecture means your hosting choice is not supposed to dictate which feeds you can use. It also creates a different portability model from Mastodon’s server-centered federation: both are distributed in important ways, but their account and moderation mechanisms are not interchangeable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMastodon: a federation of independently governed servers
Mastodon is not one centrally managed website. You select a server operated by an independent organization or person, then follow accounts on that server and on other participating servers. The server directory explains that local policies and moderation differ, so the server you choose affects your signup experience, rules and community culture.
Mastodon’s official product-direction post says the team is working on signup, server choice, discovery, administration tools and creator profiles. Those are stated priorities from February 18, 2026, not a guarantee that every planned improvement is available on every server.
Audience size: useful context, not a league table

Feeds and discovery: who decides what you see?
Threads gives you controls inside a ranked system
Threads combines algorithmic ranking with user controls. Meta’s documented tools include custom feeds, topic discovery, reply controls and quote-post settings. Meta also announced Dear Algo on February 11, 2026, allowing users to request more or less of selected topics for three days; at announcement, availability was listed for the United States, New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom. Rollouts and geographic access can change.
In June 2026, Meta said its Your Algo feature was rolling out in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, alongside communities that had graduated from beta. Those locations describe that announcement, not permanent global availability.
Bluesky lets you subscribe to different ranking systems
Bluesky’s selectable feeds are the defining discovery feature. You can add feeds designed around topics, languages, chronology or other ranking rules, then switch among them rather than relying on one universal algorithm. Moderation services and labels can also be layered onto the account and feed experience.
This is useful when you want to deliberately tune discovery—for example, keeping a chronological feed for close contacts and a topic feed for professional conversation. Feed quality depends on the people and rules behind each feed, so selection itself becomes part of account management.

Mastodon’s official description centers on a home feed of posts from accounts you follow, including accounts on other servers. Discovery is therefore more relationship- and community-driven than a single centralized recommendation stream. A server’s culture may help you find people with shared interests, but the experience can vary substantially between servers.

Moderation and safety are different models, not a simple ranking
Mastodon: server-level governance
Each Mastodon server sets its own rules and enforcement practices. Read a server’s code of conduct, moderation documentation and administrator information before joining. A policy that works well for one community may not exist on another, and a server administrator can affect what content is allowed or blocked locally.
Mastodon’s technical-direction post states: “Mastodon won’t ever harvest your data or chase engagement metrics.” That is Mastodon’s stated product position in its February 18, 2026 post, not an independent audit finding.
Bluesky: platform moderation plus services, labels and user tools
Bluesky describes moderation services, labels and user controls that are not tied to one server. Its 2025 transparency report says it operated moderation coverage around the clock during 2025, with human review for appeals and edge cases.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The same report says daily reports of anti-social behavior fell by approximately 79% after an experiment reduced visibility for certain toxic, spammy, off-topic or bad-faith replies. This is a Bluesky-reported result from its own measurement; it is not a controlled comparison with Threads or Mastodon.
Threads: conversation controls in a centralized service
Threads’ documented controls include follower-only replies, reply approvals and filters. These tools let you restrict who can participate or which replies appear, while Meta’s central systems handle policy enforcement and ranking. Review the current in-app options because feature names and availability can change.
Portability: what happens when you move?
Bluesky’s hosting-change promise
Bluesky says users can move between hosting providers without losing their username, friends or posts. This is a protocol-level portability claim: the account’s identity and social data are intended to remain usable even if the hosting provider changes. Confirm the destination provider’s support and current migration procedure before starting a move.

Mastodon migration has specific limits
Mastodon supports moving a profile to another server, and its directory says followers can be retained. The detailed migration documentation adds important limits:
- Posts do not transfer to the new account.
- Follows, blocks, mutes and bookmarks may require separate export and import.
- Follower transfer depends on the relevant software supporting the move activity.
- Other settings and relationships may need manual reconstruction.
Before leaving, export the data Mastodon allows you to export, verify that the destination server accepts migrations and tell contacts where to find you. Do not assume that a follower-preserving move is a complete copy of your account.
Threads is the least portable of these models
Threads is a centrally operated Meta service rather than a federation in which you select an independent host. The documented comparison here provides no equivalent promise of moving a Threads identity and posts to another provider. If portability is a deciding requirement, Bluesky and Mastodon offer clearer documented mechanisms, with Mastodon’s transfer limits noted above.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Creator tools, analytics and community features
Threads Insights and cross-app discovery
Meta documents creator Insights covering views, interactions, follower demographics, geography and discovery. Those metrics can help a creator distinguish impressions from responses and identify where viewers found a post. Meta also says eligible posts may be recommended on Instagram and Facebook, creating a potential path to people who do not yet follow the Threads account.
Use these as opportunities, not guarantees. Recommendation eligibility, distribution and analytics interfaces can change by account, country and rollout stage.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Bluesky’s strength is composability
Bluesky’s open protocol and feed ecosystem favor creators and communities that want specialized discovery rather than one universal feed. You can participate in or build around different feeds and moderation services, but the platform’s documented material in this comparison does not establish a standardized native analytics package equivalent to Threads Insights.

Mastodon’s community-first direction
Mastodon’s February 2026 technical-direction post identifies onboarding, discovery and creator profiles as areas of work. Because servers are independently operated, the tools and integrations available to you can depend on the server software and administrator. Ask a prospective server what creator and moderation features it currently supports.
Choose by the audience you actually need
Choose Threads if reach is your first constraint
- You want access to a very large reported monthly-active audience.
- Your potential readers already use Instagram or Facebook.
- You need built-in views, interaction and demographic reporting.
- You prefer centralized controls over selecting a server or hosting provider.
Threads is the most defensible starting point for broad consumer discovery, but do not treat its 500-million figure as a promise that every topic or account will perform well.
Choose Bluesky if control and portability matter most
- You want to select different algorithmic feeds.
- You value an identity that can move between hosting providers.
- You want moderation labels and services that are not determined by one server.
- You are comfortable evaluating individual feeds and services as part of your setup.
Bluesky is particularly suitable for people who see the social graph and ranking system as infrastructure they should be able to change.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose Mastodon if local community governance is the point
- You want to join a server with explicit local rules and culture.
- You prefer a home timeline centered on accounts you follow.
- You are willing to evaluate administrators and server policies before posting.
- You accept that moving later may preserve followers but not posts.
Mastodon works best when the server itself is part of your community decision, not merely a technical detail.
A practical selection process
- Define your primary outcome. Write one sentence such as “I need professional discovery,” “I need a local-interest community” or “I need an account I can move.” If you list several priorities, rank them.
- Inspect the people you want to reach. Search for organizations, creators and conversations in your field on all three services. A theoretical audience total is less useful than finding active participants in your niche.
- Test the feed experience. On Threads, try custom feeds and topic controls. On Bluesky, compare several selectable feeds. On Mastodon, follow accounts across servers and observe the home timeline.
- Read the moderation terms. For Mastodon, read the exact server rules and administrator information. For Bluesky and Threads, review available labels, reply controls, blocking and filtering tools.
- Check measurement needs. If you need follower geography, discovery sources and interaction reporting, confirm that Threads Insights is available to your account. If you choose Bluesky or Mastodon, decide how you will measure performance with the tools currently available to you.
- Plan an exit before building an audience. Save handles, export available data and document important contacts. On Mastodon, understand the post-transfer limitation before you publish a large archive.
- Run a short, consistent trial. Publish comparable posts for two or three weeks, record meaningful replies and qualified contacts—not just impressions—and note which conversations you can sustain. There is no independent study proving that one network wins every engagement category.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Comparing unlike audience figures. Threads’ monthly active count, Bluesky’s user total and Mastodon’s directory crawl are not the same metric.
- Assuming federation means identical portability. Bluesky describes retaining posts during a hosting move; Mastodon’s documentation says posts do not transfer.
- Choosing a Mastodon server casually. Local rules and moderation are part of the product you are joining.
- Treating recommendation eligibility as guaranteed reach. Meta’s cross-app recommendations can expand discovery but do not promise distribution.
- Using one moderation anecdote as a safety ranking. Bluesky’s 79% figure is a self-reported experiment result, not a cross-platform benchmark.
- Assuming announced features are global and permanent. Dear Algo and Your Algo were described with specific rollout countries and dates; availability can change.
What the current evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The documented facts support a design-based choice, not a universal winner. Threads has the broadest reported active audience and the clearest built-in creator measurement in these materials. Bluesky offers the most explicit combination of selectable feeds and protocol-level hosting portability. Mastodon offers the clearest server-level governance and community context, with migration constraints that must be understood in advance.
Server culture, topic activity, language coverage and your own publishing habits can outweigh network-wide totals. Recheck feature availability and server policies when you sign up, particularly if your decision depends on a regional rollout or a planned Mastodon feature.
