Bluesky plans to introduce payments in the coming months, but the service is not fully specified or generally available as of October 16, 2026. The proposed system would let people support creators, publishers, game makers and fundraisers from posts, with payments intended to work across Bluesky and other apps that use the AT Protocol.
The strategy is designed to generate revenue without making targeted advertising the network’s primary business. Bluesky has not announced a launch date, payment processor, supported countries, fees, tax rules, refunds or buyer-protection terms, so users cannot yet rely on Bluesky as a native checkout service.
What Bluesky has announced
Payments are planned, not live
TechCrunch reported on October 15, 2026 that Bluesky intends to add payments “in the coming months.” The announcement describes a direction rather than a finished product. There is no published list of supported currencies or countries, no confirmed processor, and no public documentation for account verification, settlement times, refunds, chargebacks or taxes.

The plan is broader than a tip button
The examples discussed by Bluesky include fundraising, newsletter subscriptions, independent-game sales and traffic to publishers. That suggests a payment layer for several kinds of transactions, rather than a feature limited to one-time creator tips. The final product could still launch with a narrower scope.
Why Bluesky is pursuing payments now
Bluesky says its network is already large enough to support a commercial layer, while its open architecture makes a conventional advertising moat difficult. Official figures provide this context:
| Measure | Published figure | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Users | 41.41 million in 2025, up from 25.94 million | Bluesky’s 2026 transparency report |
| Posts | 1.41 billion created in 2025 | Bluesky’s 2026 transparency report |
| Funding | $100 million Series B in April 2025 | Bluesky’s 2026 funding update |
| Wider ecosystem | More than 43 million global users, over 1,000 apps used weekly and about 400,000 SDK downloads per month | Bluesky’s 2026 funding update |
The company’s 2023 business plan said its model “must be fundamentally different” because Bluesky is a public social network with open-source code and no data moat. Executives have continued to argue in 2026 that advertising is not the only viable social-network business model.

How the proposed cross-app system could work
Portable support and purchases
Bluesky says a payment should not be trapped inside one app. Wang described the infrastructure as a way to let value flow to the people creating it, while Schneider said content bought in one app should remain usable in others, subject to the eventual implementation. In practice, that could mean a person discovers a newsletter, game or fundraiser in one AT Protocol app and completes or manages support through another compatible app.
This is a stated design objective, not a published technical standard. Bluesky has not explained how accounts, entitlements, digital delivery, identity checks or disputes would be synchronized between independent services.
Fees are still unknown
Schneider said Bluesky expects to take a percentage below the typical 30% app-store rate, but he did not give a final percentage. Until Bluesky publishes a fee schedule, creators cannot calculate their net revenue or compare the service with payment providers and app stores.

What creators, publishers and fundraisers should expect
If the announced design is implemented, the likely workflow would be:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- A creator or organization publishes a post or link describing a product, subscription, game or fundraising campaign.
- A user opens a payment prompt from a compatible Bluesky or AT Protocol app.
- The payment service verifies the payer and recipient, applies whatever fee Bluesky and its partners set, and records the transaction.
- The recipient delivers access, a subscription, a donation receipt or another benefit through a service that supports the purchase.
- The recipient and buyer retain an identity or entitlement that can be recognized by other participating apps, if the final protocol supports that portability.
Every step after discovery depends on details that have not been released. There is no published information about recurring billing, age restrictions, nonprofit verification, digital-goods delivery, sales-tax collection or whether a fundraiser would need to use a separate regulated platform.
How this differs from advertising and app-store payments
| Question | Bluesky’s stated payment direction | Advertising-led social networks | App-store checkout |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who controls identity and data? | Bluesky emphasizes portable, user-owned data and an open AT Protocol ecosystem. | Usually the network controls the account relationship and much of the data used for advertising. | The store controls the platform account and transaction relationship. |
| Do payments work across apps? | That is an explicit goal, but the standard is not published. | Usually limited to the network’s own products and partners. | Generally limited to apps and content distributed through that store. |
| Who sets fees? | Not announced; Bluesky has only said its percentage should be below a typical 30% app-store rate. | Ad pricing and revenue shares are set by the network and advertising market. | The store publishes its own commission and billing rules. |
| Can a creator leave? | Bluesky says users must be able to leave if monetization changes, with portability as a design principle. | Leaving can mean losing followers, analytics and transaction history tied to the network. | Leaving the store can remove access to its customer base and distribution. |
| Refunds and chargebacks | Terms are not published. | Handled under the network’s commerce and advertising policies. | Handled under the store’s billing and consumer-protection rules. |
The trade-offs Bluesky must solve
Fraud, chargebacks and buyer protection
Payments create disputes that ordinary posts do not. Bluesky will need rules for stolen cards, fake fundraisers, undelivered digital goods, unauthorized recurring charges and chargeback losses. No liability or dispute process has been announced.

- Pay one transparent rate per swipe for Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express.
- Works in conjunction with most downloadable Square point-of-sale apps on your device. Customers can pay, tip and sign directly on your device. Track payments in cash, gift cards and more. Also lets you send receipts via e-mail or text message, makes it easy to apply discounts, keeps a data and sales history log and more.
- Accepts magstripe credit card payments, including those from Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express (fees apply).
- App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).
Moderation of commercial content
Commercial posts can be legal yet deceptive, unsafe or abusive. A cross-app system will need ways to identify prohibited campaigns, coordinate enforcement between independent apps and prevent a bad actor from moving the same offer to another client after removal.
Privacy and targeting
A payment service must process sensitive information even if Bluesky avoids advertising-based profiling. The company has not said which payment data it will retain, whether apps will see purchase histories, or how data will be shared across AT Protocol services.
Taxes and geographic availability
Creators may face sales tax, VAT, income reporting and nonprofit documentation requirements. Bluesky has not stated where payments will launch or which party will calculate, collect or report taxes.

- Mobile card reader that accepts payments anywhere & anytime
- Use the free SumUp App on your smartphone or tablet to start accepting transactions

Interoperability and adoption
The cross-app benefit depends on independent developers adopting compatible standards. Rose Wang said, “First, we’ll start with payments, but I think it’s about disrupting the actual infrastructure layer.” That ambition will be tested by whether other apps support the same identities, entitlements and dispute rules.

Users cannot yet assume that a Bluesky post includes native checkout. People already use the network to link to newsletters, games, fundraisers and publisher pages, but those transactions are handled by the external services chosen by each creator.
Bluesky’s first documented paid service was custom-domain support for handles, offered through a Namecheap partnership in 2023. Its 2023 business plan said more than 13,000 users had repurposed or purchased domains for Bluesky handles. The 2026 roadmap also highlights third-party Atmosphere apps, including Streamplace live-stream integration. These examples show commercial and service activity around the protocol, but they do not establish a current Bluesky payment account or a universal checkout system.

Bluesky’s current scale explains why it wants to build this layer, but no published figure yet shows payment volume, creator earnings or fundraising totals. Those numbers will be necessary to judge whether payments become a meaningful alternative to advertising rather than simply another link-out workflow.
