Bluesky is expanding its standalone Attie AI assistant beyond custom feeds. Announced at TechCrunch Disrupt on October 15, 2026, the update lets people describe and create small websites, quizzes, games, polls and other interactive social experiences, with each creation tied to the builder’s identity in the AT Protocol ecosystem.

What Attie is—and what changed

Attie is an experimental Bluesky project, but it is not a mode inside the main Bluesky app. The service began as a separate AI assistant for creating custom social feeds with natural-language instructions. Bluesky’s March 2026 launch description said Attie used Anthropic’s Claude, allowed sign-in with an identity from the Atmosphere, and was intended to grow into a way to make social applications and tools.

The October expansion adds a broader creation scope. A person can use a plain-language prompt to make a small website, quiz, game, poll or another interactive page intended for other people to use. Bluesky has not published a final catalog of supported formats, so the announcement should be read as an expanding set of social experiences rather than a fixed product specification.

How the AT Protocol connection works

Attie creations are connected to the creator’s AT Protocol (ATProto) identity. ATProto is the open protocol behind Bluesky and the wider “Atmosphere,” a collection of independent social apps and tools that can interoperate instead of relying on one company’s closed platform.

That identity link gives a project a relationship to its author beyond a one-off page hosted by an anonymous AI coding service. Bluesky says creations can benefit from Bluesky’s distribution and the broader Atmosphere, although the announcement does not promise that every project will automatically appear in every Bluesky feed or app.

Support for ATProto private data was still in alpha testing in the October report, with a planned rollout by the end of 2026. Final privacy controls and a firm release date had not been specified, so builders should not assume private-data features are generally available.

What people can build

  • Websites: Small informational or community pages generated from a natural-language description.
  • Quizzes and polls: Interactive questions that can be shared with a group.
  • Games: Lightweight playable experiences rather than a promise of full-scale commercial game development.
  • Other social experiences: Bluesky describes the category broadly, leaving room for additional community tools as Attie develops.

The announcement does not provide technical limits, hosting quotas, supported programming languages, export options or a guaranteed uptime standard. Those details matter for anyone considering Attie for a production service rather than an experiment.

Why Bluesky is emphasizing community creation

Bluesky frames the update as “social vibe coding”: AI-assisted creation designed for a group, not just for the person writing the prompt. CEO Toni Schneider said, “We’re adding a feature to our Attie product that allows you to build sites and social experiences again for a group of people. So think of it as … social vibe coding or vibe coding for your community.” He contrasted that with the usual “single-user, solo experience” of vibe coding.

COO Rose Wang made the distribution argument directly: creation is more useful when it has an audience, and Attie can draw on “the Bluesky distribution.” In practice, that means a community organizer, educator or event host could make an interactive page and share it through an existing social network instead of finding an audience from scratch.

Bluesky’s broader strategy is to encourage developers to build independent apps and integrations that plug into live moments while using the same open protocol. CEO Jay Graber summarized the philosophy at launch: “We think AI should serve people, not platforms.” Attie is therefore positioned less as a replacement for professional development tools than as an on-ramp for people who have an idea but cannot or do not want to start by writing code.

Attie compared with other ways to build

Dimension Attie’s announced approach Conventional AI coding tool Typical closed social platform
Primary audience Groups and communities creating shared experiences Usually an individual builder or development team Users publishing within one platform’s formats
Distribution Potential reach through Bluesky and the Atmosphere Normally a separately hosted project Platform-controlled discovery
Identity Linked to an ATProto identity Tool- or host-specific account Platform-specific account
Technical barrier Natural-language creation is the stated goal Prompts may still require coding and debugging Usually limited to built-in templates and controls
Openness Built around a shared protocol and independent apps Depends on the tool and hosting stack Generally closed to the platform

This comparison describes the products’ intended models, not a benchmark. Bluesky has not published enough implementation detail to establish how Attie projects perform, how portable their code is, or how they compare technically with professional development environments.

Who can use it now?

Access remains unsettled. The March report described Attie as being in private beta and said Bluesky had not decided whether it would charge a fee. The October announcement did not establish a final public launch date, pricing plan, eligibility rule or moderation process.

Those unknowns are significant for communities. Before relying on Attie for a public event or classroom, confirm whether your account has access, whether projects can be edited or exported, what happens when a project is reported, and whether data can be removed. None of those policies was finalized in the announcement.

How this fits Bluesky’s growth

Bluesky’s January strategy description calls the Atmosphere an ecosystem of apps built on the same open protocol as Bluesky. The company said that, in a four-month period in 2026, it gained 2 million new users and nearly 200 new Atmosphere apps. TechCrunch reported 47 million registered users in its October 15 coverage.

Registered-account totals are not the same as active users, and the same report noted declining engagement. Attie’s potential distribution should therefore not be interpreted as a guarantee that every project will reach a large or consistently active audience.

What to watch next

  • Whether Attie moves from private testing to broad availability.
  • Pricing, usage limits and any requirements for publishing projects.
  • Moderation rules for games, polls and user-generated pages.
  • Final controls for ATProto-linked data, especially private data.
  • Whether creations are portable across Atmosphere apps or remain dependent on Attie.
  • Tools for collaboration, version history, editing and code or data export.

The Bottom Line

Attie is becoming a natural-language way to make small, shareable websites and interactive social experiences tied to AT Protocol identities. Its distinctive promise is community distribution through Bluesky and the wider Atmosphere, but access, pricing, moderation, portability and privacy controls are still being worked out.
