Blue Owl Capital’s co-CEOs Doug Ostrover and Marc Lipschultz told Semafor on October 8, 2026, that investors misunderstand the company and that shareholders should expect strong results. The reassurance has not changed the stock: a market report published October 17, 2026, said OWL remained about 67% below its January 2025 record high.
The reason is straightforward: management offered confidence, not new operating or financial evidence. Investors are instead weighing redemption pressure in private-credit funds, questions about loan quality, slower expected growth, founder share pledges and a long-term record that trails the S&P 500.
What Blue Owl’s founders promised
Lipschultz rejected the idea that Blue Owl should be taken private, telling Semafor, “We went public for a reason and that reason stands.” He added, “Public shareholders are going to benefit from the rise in this stock.” Ostrover said, “We’re looking out the next 18 months and we think we’re going to put up fantastic results.”
Those are management forecasts, not realized returns or guidance backed by a newly disclosed earnings target. Blue Owl’s October 30, 2025 earnings transcript contains a similar message from Lipschultz: “We are doing two things that I think at the end of the day, will solve this problem. One, we are executing, executing, executing.” He also said investors joining at that point could become beneficiaries of what management viewed as substantial upside.

The stock’s lack of reaction indicates that investors want measurable evidence—fundraising, fee growth, earnings, cash-flow generation and stable credit performance—rather than another statement of confidence.
Why the stock has not recovered
Private-credit liquidity has become the central concern
Semafor reported that investors were seeking money back from Blue Owl and comparable private-credit managers while the underlying loans could not be sold quickly. When withdrawal requests exceed available liquidity, funds can limit redemptions. That structure protects a portfolio from forced asset sales, but it also prevents investors from receiving cash when they expect it and can damage confidence in the platform.
Regulators and investors have also raised questions about loan quality. Even without a reported wave of defaults, uncertainty over valuations, refinancing and borrower performance can reduce the fees investors are willing to pay for a private-credit manager. A founder’s promise of future results does not remove that liquidity and credit risk.

Markets are pricing slower growth
The approximately 67% decline from the January 2025 peak reflects a valuation reset as well as concern about current results. Investors previously paid for a high-growth alternative-asset manager. The market is now pricing in slower revenue growth and is assigning a lower multiple to the earnings Blue Owl may produce.
That distinction matters. A business can continue to earn management fees while its stock falls if investors believe future fee growth, fundraising or incentive income will be weaker than previously assumed. A lower share price is not by itself evidence that the operating problem has been fixed.
Founder share pledges create an overhang
Bloomberg reported on February 9, 2026, that Ostrover and Lipschultz had pledged more than half of their Blue Owl holdings as collateral for loans. Bloomberg said the collateral value had fallen by $260 million after OWL shares lost 16% during 2026 up to that report.

A pledge is not the same as a forced sale, and no forced sale was reported in that account. The risk is that a further decline could trigger lender action or encourage selling, adding shares to the market when sentiment is already weak. It also gives shareholders another reason to monitor leverage around the founders, separate from the company’s investment performance.
The stock has lagged the broad market
Blue Owl’s 2025 Form 10-K performance graph, filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in 2026, shows the following total-return comparison for the period from December 31, 2020, through December 31, 2025:

The filing expressly warns that this performance graph is not indicative of future performance. It nevertheless shows why investors may be skeptical of a quick rebound: Blue Owl had already underperformed the benchmark over the five-year period before the later drawdown.

What management says is working
Recurring management fees
Ostrover said in the October 8, 2026 Semafor interview that about 98% of Blue Owl’s revenue comes from management fees. Management presents that mix as a source of predictable, recurring cash flow because fees are generally tied to assets under management rather than short-term trading gains.
The figure is a company-reported description of revenue composition, not a guarantee that fee revenue will remain stable. Assets can fall, clients can redeem where fund terms allow, and new fundraising can slow.

Business mix beyond direct lending
Lipschultz said direct lending represents about one-third of the business and that real assets are the fastest-growing area. A broader mix could reduce dependence on one credit strategy, but it also means investors must assess fundraising and performance separately across private credit, real assets and other alternatives.

Digital infrastructure growth claims
In the official third-quarter 2025 earnings transcript, management reported high-teen internal rates of return across Digital Infrastructure Funds I, II and III and an addressable pipeline exceeding $100 billion. These are company-reported historical or pipeline figures. They are not promises that future funds will produce the same returns, and a pipeline is not the same as committed capital or collected fees.

Both outcomes remain possible. The stock resembles a rebound candidate if fundraising and fee-related earnings stabilize, redemption pressure eases, credit losses remain controlled and the real-assets and digital-infrastructure businesses deliver repeatable growth. It resembles a value trap if the 67% fall mainly reflects a permanent reduction in growth and investors continue to discount the platform for liquidity, credit and governance risks.

What shareholders should watch next
- Quarterly net flows, redemption requests and any changes to withdrawal terms in private-credit vehicles.
- Fee-related earnings growth, assets under management and the percentage of revenue generated by management fees.
- Credit marks, non-accruals, defaults and realized losses in direct-lending portfolios.
- Conversion of the reported $100 billion-plus digital-infrastructure pipeline into commitments, deployments and fee-paying assets.
- Growth in real-assets assets under management relative to direct lending.
- Updated disclosures about founder pledges, collateral values and any sale of pledged shares.
- OWL’s total return against the S&P 500, while remembering that past performance does not predict future results.
Bottom line
Blue Owl’s founders promised “fantastic results” over the next 18 months, but the October 2026 stock reaction shows that investors need proof rather than reassurance. Until fund flows, credit quality, fee growth and founder-related share-supply risks improve, OWL remains a high-uncertainty turnaround candidate—not an established comeback.
