You can access an existing Blue Iris system remotely through its built-in web server: use UI3 in a browser or a mobile client to view live cameras and recorded clips. To make that work from outside your home or business network, configure the server and router so inbound traffic reaches the Blue Iris PC. Then protect that access with individual permissions, HTTPS, and an authentication method appropriate to your setup.
How do I access Blue Iris remotely?
Blue Iris includes a web server and UI3, its browser-based interface. The official product information describes remote viewing of live cameras and recorded clips from desktop and mobile devices, alongside mobile functions such as managing multiple installations and controlling PTZ and infrared features. You can also use a mobile client where supported.
Remote access has two parts: Blue Iris must be configured to accept connections, and your network must route connections from outside to the PC running Blue Iris. A client choice does not, by itself, make that PC reachable over the internet.
What you need to configure
1. Confirm the Blue Iris web server settings
Blue Iris’s built-in server listens on a configured port. The manual’s settings example shows port 81 as a default, but that is an example—not a value to assume for your installation. Check the port configured on your own system, and confirm that the web server is enabled and that you can reach it from a device on the same local network.

When an address uses a nonstandard port, the port follows the host after a colon. Use the actual local address of the Blue Iris PC and its configured web-server port when testing locally; do not copy example addresses or ports from a manual into your own network.
2. Give the Blue Iris PC a stable local address
A router’s forwarding rule must point to the PC running Blue Iris. If that PC’s local network address changes, the rule may point to the wrong device. Use your router’s address-reservation feature or another method supported by your network to keep the PC’s local address stable. The router’s menu names and procedures vary by manufacturer and firmware.

3. Configure inbound routing on the router
Port forwarding maps a port reachable from outside the local network to the Blue Iris web-server port on the Blue Iris PC. The manual says to use TCP or “both” for the forwarding protocol. The external and internal port values do not have to be identical, but the rule must direct traffic to the correct PC and server port.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- In the router’s administration interface, find the port-forwarding or virtual-server settings.
- Create a rule that forwards the chosen external port to the Blue Iris PC’s stable local address and configured web-server port, using TCP or “both.”
- Save the rule and test from a device using a connection outside the local network, such as a phone with Wi-Fi turned off. A test from inside the same network may not accurately reflect external reachability.
Router interfaces differ, so the exact menu path cannot be stated universally. If the Blue Iris PC is behind more than one router, the manual notes that the routers may need to be configured in sequence so traffic can pass through each one to the PC.

4. Choose a client and sign in
For a browser, connect to the external address or hostname for your network and the forwarded port, then sign in to UI3. In a mobile client, configure the installation’s connection details and credentials as that client requires. Blue Iris’s product page describes automatic adjustment if the system’s IP changes, but you should still confirm that the address or hostname used by your client resolves to your current network.
Choose the access method for the task
| Access method | Useful for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| UI3 in a desktop browser | Viewing live cameras and recorded clips from a computer. | External reachability, HTTPS, and the signed-in user’s permissions. |
| UI3 in a mobile browser | Browser-based access from a phone or tablet. | Address and port, secure connection, and whether the interface suits the task on your device. |
| Blue Iris mobile client | Mobile access, including functions the product page lists such as managing multiple installations and controlling PTZ or infrared features. | Correct installation connection details and an account with only the permissions needed. |
The official materials describe these client capabilities but do not establish a performance ranking between them. Pick based on the device and task, then verify access using the account and connection you intend to use.

Protect the connection and restrict access
Port forwarding makes a service reachable from outside your local network; it does not encrypt the connection. Blue Iris 6 supports HTTPS/SSL. Its Version 6 overview says traffic to and from the server over a LAN or the internet can be encrypted using either a self-generated certificate or a certificate signed by a certificate authority (CA). The overview describes a CA-signed certificate as globally trusted, unlike a self-signed certificate. Certificate setup and browser behavior depend on the configuration; do not assume that enabling forwarding also enables HTTPS or eliminates browser warnings.

The available product and release information does not establish that every security option is enabled by default. Review the settings in your installed version and choose the intended authentication and HTTPS configuration rather than treating external reachability as sufficient protection.

UPnP or manual port forwarding?
UPnP can allow software to request router port mappings, but the Blue Iris manual warns that UPnP may be disabled as a security measure or may not leave a persistent rule. If the requested mapping is not present or does not persist, configure forwarding in the router directly. Manual forwarding gives you an explicit rule to review, although the exact process depends on the router.
There is no single topology established for every Blue Iris installation. In particular, a system with multiple routers may require a forwarding rule at each device in the path. Check the actual network layout rather than assuming one router rule is enough.
Common remote-access failures
- Works locally, not from outside: Check that the external forwarding rule targets the Blue Iris PC’s current local address and the configured web-server port. Test from a genuinely external connection.
- Forwarding stops working later: Check whether the PC’s local address changed or whether a UPnP-created rule disappeared. A stable local address and an explicit router rule can help avoid those causes.
- There is more than one router: Trace the path from the internet-facing router to the Blue Iris PC. The manual says routers may need to be configured in sequence.
- The browser shows a certificate warning: HTTPS encrypts traffic, but certificate trust depends on the certificate in use. Blue Iris describes self-generated and CA-signed certificates; a self-generated certificate may not be trusted by a browser in the same way as a CA-signed one.
- A user can connect but cannot see or control what they need: Review that account’s assigned permissions and the relevant client functions.
Version and scope
The official Blue Iris updates page lists version 6.1.3.9 dated 7 October 2026 and includes release information about digest authentication and enhanced web-server security. Settings and router labels can differ across software versions, router manufacturers, and firmware. Blue Iris is software rather than a physical device; the official product page says a license is purchased and nothing physical is shipped.
