The Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express can be worthwhile if you spend enough at eligible U.S. supermarkets and use its eligible streaming category to offset the $95 annual fee after the first year. It earns 6% at eligible U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 in purchases per calendar year, then 1%, plus 6% on select U.S. streaming subscriptions. The key is whether your purchases qualify—and whether your own spending makes the fee worthwhile.
How the Blue Cash Preferred rewards work
American Express awards cash back as Reward Dollars. The card’s listed rates are:

The category is based on how a merchant processes and codes a transaction, not simply whether you bought food there. American Express excludes superstores, convenience stores, warehouse clubs, and meal-kit delivery services from its U.S. supermarket category. A familiar retailer name therefore does not guarantee the purchase will earn the bonus.

The $6,000 limit is a calendar-year cap on eligible supermarket purchases. After reaching it, further purchases in that category earn 1% for the remainder of that calendar year. The issuer’s reward program terms explain category coding and exclusions.
Which streaming subscriptions qualify?
The 6% rate applies to select eligible U.S. streaming subscriptions, not every recurring digital charge. American Express warns that a subscription bundled with another product or billed through a third party—such as a digital platform, cable or telecom provider, internet provider, or car manufacturer—may not qualify. Check the issuer’s current eligible-provider list and confirm the billing route before counting a service toward the card’s value.

The streaming cash-back category and the Disney streaming statement credit are separate benefits. Eligibility for one does not establish eligibility for the other.
How the Disney streaming credit works
The card offers up to $10 per month in statement credits, up to $120 per year, for qualifying subscriptions charged through specified U.S. Disney+, Hulu, or ESPN websites. Enrollment is required, and qualifying subscriptions must meet the benefit terms; auto-renewal applies. The credit is conditional rather than automatic, and it may not cover the full cost of a subscription.

Annual fee, welcome offer, and borrowing costs
The American Express product page displays a $0 annual fee for the first year, followed by a $95 annual fee. It also displays a welcome offer of up to $300 after $3,000 in purchases during the first six months. Offers can change and may not be available to every applicant, so confirm the terms presented with your application rather than treating the displayed offer as guaranteed.

The Card Member Agreement dated March 31, 2026 lists a 2.7% foreign transaction fee on each transaction after conversion to U.S. dollars. It gives a variable purchase APR of Prime Rate plus 12.74% to Prime Rate plus 21.74%; the applicable rate depends on the account terms and can change with the Prime Rate. Carrying a balance can cost more than rewards return, so the cash-back rates are not a reason to borrow. See the Card Member Agreement for the dated terms.

The issuer’s card comparison page lists the Blue Cash Everyday supermarket rate and no-annual-fee structure. The Preferred card’s higher grocery rate and streaming category may justify its fee for some spending patterns; a fee-free card may suit someone who would not earn enough extra rewards to cover it.

Estimate whether the $95 fee is worth it
Use the supermarket-only break-even point
Below the Preferred card’s supermarket cap, its grocery rate is 3 percentage points higher than Everyday’s. Dividing the $95 recurring Preferred fee by that 3-point difference gives about $3,167 in eligible supermarket spending per year to offset the fee through the grocery-rate difference alone. This is a calculation from the issuer’s published rates and fee, not an issuer-published threshold.
Adjust for your actual spending
- Count only purchases likely to code as eligible U.S. supermarket transactions, and account for the $6,000 calendar-year cap.
- Include eligible streaming, gas, and transit rewards only when you can verify the purchase qualifies.
- Value the Disney credit only if you enroll and expect to pay for a qualifying subscription through an eligible route.
- Do not count the first-year fee waiver or welcome offer as recurring value; the offer can vary by applicant.
- Compare the resulting value with the fee-free Everyday card and your preference for avoiding an annual fee.
The $3,167 illustration excludes streaming, gas, transit, the Disney credit, the first-year fee waiver, welcome offers, cap effects, and personal eligibility. It is a starting point for comparing the grocery-rate difference, not a guarantee that one card is better for you.
