The Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express has no annual fee and earns 3% cash back at U.S. supermarkets, U.S. gas stations, and on U.S. online retail purchases. Each category’s 3% rate applies to up to $6,000 in purchases per calendar year; eligible spending above that cap earns 1%, as do other eligible purchases. Whether it is a good everyday card depends on how much of your spending fits the issuer’s specific category definitions.
How the Blue Cash Everyday Card earns cash back
American Express lists these rates for the card: 3% at U.S. supermarkets, 3% on U.S. online retail purchases, and 3% at U.S. gas stations. Each rate applies to up to $6,000 in purchases per calendar year in that category, then drops to 1%. Other eligible purchases earn 1%.

The category caps are separate, not one shared $6,000 allowance. Rewards apply to eligible purchases net of returns and credits. Fees, interest, balance transfers, cash advances, prepaid-card loads, and other transactions specified in the terms do not earn rewards. What counts as groceries, gas, and online retail
Supermarkets
The 3% supermarket rate does not cover every place that sells food. American Express excludes superstores, convenience stores, warehouse clubs, and meal-kit delivery services from its U.S. supermarket category. A purchase at one of those businesses may therefore earn 1% instead.

Gas stations
The gas category excludes gas purchases made at superstores, supermarkets, and warehouse clubs. The location and merchant category matter, not just the fact that a transaction involved fuel.
Online retail
To qualify, a purchase must be made online from a qualifying U.S. retailer selling physical goods, and the merchant must categorize it as an internet transaction. An online order paid for in the store does not qualify. The terms also exclude online transactions categorized as restaurants, supermarkets, gas stations, auto dealers, travel, entertainment, services, and certain phone or mail orders. Because the merchant’s categorization controls, do not assume a particular retailer or checkout method will earn 3% without checking the current terms.

How Reward Dollars can be redeemed
Cash back is issued as Reward Dollars. American Express says these can be redeemed as a statement credit; its materials also list redemption at Amazon.com checkout. The available redemption choices and terms are set by the issuer, so check the current card details before relying on a particular option.

American Express lists no annual fee and a 2.7% foreign transaction fee after conversion to U.S. dollars on its product page. Fees and benefits can change, so confirm the current terms with the issuer before applying or using the card abroad.
Is it a good card for everyday spending?
It can be a fit if a meaningful share of your regular spending falls into eligible U.S. supermarket, gas-station, and online-retail purchases, and you prefer a card with no annual fee. The 3% categories offer less value if your spending is concentrated at excluded merchants or if you regularly exceed a category’s annual cap. Purchases outside the three categories earn 1%.

- Check where your grocery and fuel purchases take place; warehouse clubs, convenience stores, and some larger retailers do not count as supermarkets or gas stations under the terms.
- Estimate online purchases that meet the issuer’s transaction and merchant requirements, rather than counting every purchase made through a website or app.
- Consider the separate $6,000 annual caps in light of your own spending in each category.
- Count the streaming credit only if you will use an eligible subscription and can meet the enrollment and benefit terms.
Blue Cash Everyday versus Blue Cash Preferred
American Express frames the choice between Blue Cash Everyday and Blue Cash Preferred around the annual fee and rewards structure. Everyday has no annual fee and includes online retail and gas in its 3% categories. The cards’ category rates, caps, and current fees should be checked side by side on the issuer’s comparison page before deciding.
There is no universal break-even point that applies to every cardholder. To compare them, use your actual eligible spending, verify both cards’ current fees and reward terms, and include only benefits you expect to use. In particular, do not count spending at excluded merchants as bonus-category spending.
